Republicans aren't allowed to vote in the Dem. primary in Kentucky. The important thing is that if you switched parties to vote in the Dem. primary, you would've had to have done so before 12/31/07! So Republicans who switched their party affiliation in 2008, won't be able to vote in the Dem. primary. This will be maybe the only state that won't have to deal with Republican crossovers trying to cause mischief in the process. I don't what KY politician came up with that idea, but it was a smart one! Too bad Indiana didn't have a similar law.

"whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me." "There's a pattern emerging here," she said."

3. I have always supported the closed primary
Too much opportunity for mischief by the other party.

I have found that most "Independents" I have met are usually self-righteous people who don't know nearly as much about politics as they claim to. They can shut up and sit down and have their say in November. They don't have the welfare of the party in mind when they vote in these primaries.

8. That's a mighty broad brush
There are also many people who have been Independents for decades because assholery wasn't exclusive to just one political party -- they choose to vote for the candidate rather than the letter after their name. Maybe you've guessed by now, I'm an Independent. Independents don't play the mindless "our party first -- let's mess with the Dems" games that Republicans play. And since neither party can win without our votes, we're welcomed by many party elders on either side who understand this.

You're right about one thing. When I vote, I don't have the welfare of a political party in mind. I vote with the welfare of the country in mind. That's why I've voted a straight Democratic ticket since 2002.

4. Kentuckians are smart :)
I think 120 day advance for "switchers" should be the rule..and 60 days for "never voted-befores".. and there should be an independent ballot with all the names on it R & D..BUT it's for informational purposes ONLY

9. Question about Kentucky rules
You said that Republicans can't vote in the Democratic primary. What about independents?

Some states (like New York) restrict the primary to registered members of that party, sometimes with limitations on last-minute switches. Other states bar crossover voting but allow independents to vote in either primary, which always struck me as unfairly penalizing voters who choose to declare a party affiliation.
