Livening up the midsummer pre-convention doldrums, Bush's campaign leveled a new charge at his Democratic challenger: exploitative use of biblical scripture.
As he often has done in black churches, Kerry criticized "our present national leadership" in a St. Louis church recently by citing James 2:14: "What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds."
"When we look at what is happening in America today," Kerry said, "where are the works of compassion?"
A Bush campaign spokesman immediately lashed Kerry's comments as "beyond the bounds of acceptable discourse and a sad exploitation of Scripture for a political attack."

Editorial comment by DU poster: Wassa matter, Bushie? Can't stand that Kerry is speaking THE TRUTH?? Where are the acts of compassion? you RAN in 2000, as a "compassionate conservative." I, too, must ask...where are the acts of compassion?
We have an economy in the toilet for all but the privileged few...millions of jobs are being outsourced overseas, while the common American struggles to make ends meet, and find decent employment...and your policies exacerbate the problem. You address the problem by enacting MORE policy to hurt the American worker, and help your rich, corporate buddies, like the Overtime Takeaway. Meanwhile, you attempt, laughingly, (in a very Reaganesque manner)to re-classify McDonald's jobs as "manufacturing jobs" so as to make the numbers of jobs lost in the manufacturing sector appear less damning than they really are!
You deliberately hurt the common American, enact policy inimical to the average working Joe's economic interest...and then, do nothing to address the hurt you have created...and seek to cover up the hurt with a Reaganesque reclassification of Mcdonald's jpbs as "manufacturing jobs..."
and because Kerry points this out, accurately...you don't like it.
Things that make ya go hmmmmm....
