Poll question: Poll: Who did you support in 2004, and who do you support now?
Edited on Sat May-03-08 01:31 PM by democrattotheend
I thought this would be interesting to see. There are not enough choices to include all of the 2004 candidates and all of the 2008 candidates, so I am limiting it to Clinton and Obama because they are the only ones still running. Apologies to those who had another choice this year and don't have a preference between Clinton and Obama.

For the 2004 candidates, I omitted Lieberman because I know of only one person here who supported him and I remember how much people here despised him, and I grouped Kucinich, Sharpton, and Mosely-Braun because there were not enough options to include each of them separately.

If you fit into a category not listed, apologies for the omission, and please write it in by commenting. And I promise I won't judge people who supported Lieberman...I myself supported Dean but thought Lieberman was overly villified by some DUers.

Note: This is probably obvious, but the question is who you supported in the primaries. I assume most of us eventually supported Kerry once he was the nominee.

UPDATE: I forgot about Wesley Clark. I am guessing that he attracted more support from DUers than Gephardt, so I swapped it out. If you supported Gephardt please write it in.

UPDATE 2: For those who supported Kerry or Clark in 2004, I am curious if their respective endorsements of Obama and Clinton made any difference in your choice, so feel free to post that. I don't think any of the other 2004 candidates have formally endorsed, but correct me if I am wrong.

19. No!
In fact, I didn't like Dean at all.... I like him so much better now.

Weird how things shake out, huh? And for awhile there, I was really into Clark. But Edwards was my guy... the most exciting moment of '04 for me was when Kerry chose him for the ticket, and the very next day I saw them both at a fantastic rally in Dayton.

25. Funny, that's how I feel about Kerry
Wasn't crazy about him in 2004, like him a lot better now. Not just because he's been such a great advocate for Obama. He's also been a much better senator and progressive voice since losing the election.

Just curious.

I liked Edwards a lot better this time around, and was torn between him and Obama for a while.

18. No, I wasn't.
It was a difficult choice, but I just felt like Obama had fresher ideas, I loved the positive way in which he was running his campaign from the beginning, and I felt he had better advisors, and I really thought he could win.

I was so torn. I certainly would've supported Edwards had he become the nominee. I never gave Clinton a glance.

47. Clark 04 ---> Obama 08 for me as well
I still like Clark, but I don't worship any candidate. I make my own decisions.
He threw his support behind Hillary and I can respect that. He knows her and thinks she's make a fine president. Kind of like I did at the beginning on the campaign. I've since changed my mind about that one based on her campaign.

I'd like to see him as Obamas VP. I think it could help to have a Clinton supporter on the ticket now that it's too late for Clinton to be there.

17. Help me keep bumping it then
I always find these polls interesting but feel like a whore bumping my own polls constantly.

I was curious about how many Kerry supporters picked Obama because Kerry endorsed him. Since Kerry was kind of the establishment candidate in 2004, it seems logical that some of his supporters would be for Clinton now, but the fact that he endorsed Obama probably made a difference for some.

27. Makes sense. Both ran grassroots campaigns. Plus, Obama was part of the original Dean Dozen.
Honestly, between Clinton and Obama, Obama seems like a given to this former Deaniac. Obama has basically picked up where Dean left off in terms of grassroots campaigning and fundraising, while Clinton is part of the Old Guard that Dean began the process of challenging in 2004.

I wrote an article a while back about the early connection between Obama and Dean and how Obama has combined Dean's bottom-up approach and succeeded where Dean fell just a little bit short: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/17/173655/694/408/457252

Held out for a long time waiting (and hoping) to see if Clark would run this time, but was ready and willing to go with Obama once it became obvious that wasn't going to happen. In that respect, Clark's endorsement of Clinton actually cemented my public commitment to Obama, ironically enough.

32. I was "for" Edwards in both 2004 and 2008
However, it's kinda complicated... because even though I donated to Edwards in 2004 and voiced my support for him, I actually campaigned for Kerry in NH that year b/c my brother-in-law was a big supporter, and I thought it would be something worthwhile to do. (Plus, I knew Edwards didn't have a shot at coming in higher than third- and he actually finished closely behind Clark, in fourth- in NH.) However, I actually voted for Dennis Kucinich in TX by the time the primary rolled around...

This time around I was an enthusiastic Edwards supporter, but voted for Obama by the time the TX primary rolled around- since my options had essentially been whittled to two. (I think Gravel may have still been in the race, but he wasn't on the ballot here.)

35. I didn't pay much attention to the primaries in 2004,
because I was going to vote for the Democrat no matter who it was, but I had no problem giving my wholehearted support to John Kerry in the general. This year I don't care one way or the other between Hillary and Barack, although I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about supporting either as I was in supporting Kerry. I would have preferred Biden, Edwards, Dodd, Kucinich, or Richardson (or even Gravel, for that matter) to either Clinton or Obama, but .....

In 2004 I voted against Bush, not for Kerry.

1992 and 1996 I stayed home. Too young before that.

Always registered Green until this year when I saw a really strong difference between the frontrunners early on. 2004 was just confusing to me and I was glad I wasn't a Democrat at the time. This is bad enough I might stay out of the next primary, unless a third and fourth party emerge and we have some real choices for a change.

I supported Clark until he dropped out, then Dean until he dropped out 7 days later, then Edwards until he dropped out.

I donated small amounts to all three.

When my state primary rolled around, Kerry was the presumptive nominee. I still voted for Clark.

Voted for Kerry in the general election.

2008

I wanted Clark to run, but he never did, so I supported Edwards until he dropped out. I now support Obama.

I have donated small amounts to Edwards and Obama.

If Hillary is the nominee I will vote for her in the general election.

Anybody notice a pattern?

50. I supported Kerry and now support Obama, but you can put an asterisk by that
given I'm from Oregon and the nomination was pretty much decided by the time we got to vote. Also take into account I was overseas and wasn't following the primaries even close to as much as I'm following them now. Both of these factors, combined with the fact that someone like Obama is running make a big difference.

But I was still lukewarm to Obama until I saw a couple other key endorsements and read the rationale behind them, as well as doing some additional research.

Like Kerry, Obama isn't perfect, but then no one is, and they are both pretty damn good on the things that are important to me.

54. I was more "anyone but Bush" in 2004 - and didn't get involved
until the primaries so I chose the Kerry option. A few months before the election I heard he was the democrat, bought a few tshirts to wear and sent the DNC a small donation.

This time I was curious much earlier. All it took was watching a speech or two by Obama to become excited about the election. Of course I've never really liked Hillary Clinton so it was an easy choice.
