Letter from the Chairman
Dear :
Congratulations to Eric Bauman, who was reelected Chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee on Tuesday night. The vote was 180 to 11 in favor of Eric! We look forward to his continued leadership in LA.
I am sure that you have listened with astonishment this week as the Bush administration has trotted out a proposal to postpone the November elections in the event of a terrorist attack. Never before in the history of this country has such a profound assumption regarding a scheduled election been proposed. As Sen. Barbara Boxer said, "To even consider postponing our elections, the most ardent symbol of American democracy, because of threats made by terrorists would be nothing short of allowing fear to rule our country. America is too great and too strong and too brave for that." Representative Jane Harman (D-El Segundo) stated, "I think it's excessive based on what we know." Senator Dianne Feinstein affirmed the resolution to go forward, "We hold elections in the middle of war, in the middle of earthquakes, in the middle of whatever it takes. The election is a statutory election. It should go ahead, on schedule.…"
This is not Central America, where President Jimmy Carter is called upon to come in and monitor the election. By seeking to put in place procedures to delay the election, the people around Bush are demonstrating that they will do anything to keep power.
This is an issue on which we cannot be silent. Therefore I am asking you to write a letter to your local newspaper. We make it easy for you. We have a searchable list of media on our website that will give you the addresses of media in your area. We need to alert readers everywhere that calling for a postponement shows just how arrogant and desperate the Bush administration has become. We need a change in the White House and we need an election to do that, no matter what.
Sincerely,
Senator Art Torres (Ret.)
Chairman, California Democratic Party
