Will we EVER elect a woman President of this country?
I thought this would be the year. But it's looking less and less likely that it will happen.

I'm a male but I think that it's disgusting that a modern first-world country has never had a female leader. 51% of the population and still a minority.

Think about it. There are many countries that have had black, male leaders, but only a handful of countries that have had female leaders, either black or white. Obama's a great guy, but it's time we set an example for the world. It's embarrassing that we haven't done it before now.

(My first thread, be gentle please! :))

87. It's more important to elect a good president than it is to elect a woman....
...Hillary is the wrong candidate. She cannot even run her campain. It's as organized as a box full of ferrets. She also uses ROve/BushJr tactics, and I don't think our country can take another 4 years of that.

I hope to see a woman president in my lifetime, but I don't another bad president. Our country is in such disarray after 4 years of Bush Jr/ROve I don't think we can stand another 4 years of Bush Jr's clone, Hillary.

McCain would also be a first in being the first person to be President in his mid 80s.

i think gays, muslims, mormons, wiccans, socialists, communists etc could all win easily over anyone that was an atheist.

if a white male atheist ran against a female black muslim socialist lesbian the woman would win just because she believed in God.

and I agree, I thought I would want to live in my lifetime for the first woman President, but I think it is more important to have a President that the world respects now that Bush has ruined our standing in the world. So, first we need anyone, not just a woman.

Anyway, post and don't worry about how easy people are on you. You have just as much right to be here as anyone....

So we should just elect a women because "it hasn't happened and it'd just be nice" How about we elect the person who would be the best President, and if that person happens to be a women, then that's fine. Voting based on gender, race, religion is just really really wrong and stupid.

21. Most definitely
The time is right for a woman president, and I feel in many ways a woman would have a better temperament for the job after watching male conduct the past 40 years or so.

What is needed is a woman to emerge with her own career accomplishments and political standing, but not someone riding the coat tails of her husband's presidency with little in the way of personal career accomplishments. It will happen, hang in there.

Trust me - to the rest of the world that you compare yourself with - you electing a black man is a way bigger deal.

As for someone that has voted in the hopes of a female prime minister (could not vote directly for them, but for their parties), and voted for a few for City council, European Parliament and county representatives - I still would not vote for Hillary.
She has left me with no doubt that her ambition, money and bad experiences has made her rotten at the core. "as far as I know" was a prism into a corrupted soul.

28. at to the title question: yes we will
as to the rest, well, I find it just as "disgusting" to have never elected anyone who wasn't White.

I would challenge your "only a handful" who have had female leaders. I think it is a faulty premise. But even if it were so, we are not so easily equated to other "modern first-world" countries. Some might even challenge our status as really belonging in that category. Our history is different than that of Canada, the UK, France, or Japan, and our advancement must reflect that.

So yes, we will elect a woman. But it will not be just because she is the first woman to have a fighting chance at it. And hopefully when we do, she will not be an entrenched part of the status quo.

That said, welcome. I hope you enjoy your time here. Prepare to be disagreed with, but also agreed with. It is much nicer when you pay no attention to the few idiots who couldn't find civility if we stapled it to their noses. The rest of us are passionate, but good when you can get behind the arguments.

But Americans will be more comfortable with a man, even if it is an African American man. We have come a long way baby. Just not far enough. Maybe in 20 or 25 more years will the great America be willing to hand the reins over to a woman. We should be ashamed of ourselves for being less progressive than many nations who have been willing to treat women equally. I wonder if our first woman President will only get a salary that is about 70% of what the men before her had earned??

Whether the next 10 Presidents are women or we never see one matters little to me. I want the best person for the country and of the three still in the race, Obama is the clear choice. We may indeed see a woman President, it's just not going to be this one. And basing your vote simply on the fact that the candidate has a certain set of genitals is ridiculous. Would you vote for Condi because "It's time for a woman!"? Please.

Clinton has no one to blame for her loss but herself and Mark Penn. She ran a horribly managed campaign in a race that was hers for the taking.

And about your black male vs female comparison...it's a bit flawed. I'm sure the BLACK MALE leaders where leading countries that were majority BLACK. How many countries that are majority WHITE (or OTHER NON-BLACK) have there been BLACK male leaders....I would venture to guess NONE.

41. We need a GREAT PRESIDENT -- I don't give a damn what their gender is
This election is too damned important to base one's vote on criteria that has nothing to do with the quality of the person being elected. My initial candidate was John Edwards. Now it's Obama. I'm a feminist and I would love to see a female President in my lifetime -- but I'm not going to vote for *any* woman either. To vote for a candidate solely on the basis of gender is continuing sexism, not curing it.

of a female president, we would never have another one. I hope one day we have a talented female with good character become the first female president. There are many, many talented ladies out there that would be wonderful presidents. They would have respectable campaigns and not go down in the gutter to get the position (unlike Hillary). That will be a wonderful day when that finally happens.

55. I doubt it. Really, I seriously doubt it.
There are so many people convinced that women have equal rights (including many of the people here!) that it doesn't seem important to a lot of people. The sad thing is that that group includes women.

I think it's a disgrace, and I think the way Hillary has been treated is a disgrace. How would Obama supporters feel if people dismissed his candidacy by saying, "oh, we'll have a black president someday. I'll vote for a black person, just not THIS one". They would shout racism (and perhaps rightfully so).

If one more person says they'll vote for a woman, just not "this one", I'll scream. Seriously, they are running very close to each other. He has almost all the support of the black community, she has only half to two thirds of the women's vote. I suppose it's a good reflection on how women vote, but it is a telling statistic. Not all my women friends are for Hillary; ALL of my male friends are for Obama and some are sending me obnoxious emails telling me that Hillary should drop out.

(I will add that in my FAMILY, the men are Hillary supporters. Of course, my father's vote counts for nothing because he is in Michigan and Obama doesn't give a rat's ass about Michigan's voters).

I hope that a well qualified woman with a good character and a vision for America will run for president and be elected in the future. It would be good for our country.

63. Sorry, but that alone is not a reason we should toss Obama aside and elect Clinton
And it's worth pointing out that we have never had a black president either.

I'd love to see a woman president but I care about character, and I respect Obama a lot more as a person and that's why I, as a woman, decided to support him.

71. Thanks to Hillary and her ugly, dirty campaign, and her lies and whining, IMO...
...she has made it tough for any woman to be elected. She has left a very bitter taste in the mouth of too many people. I wish to hell it were different, but the huge negative reactions I see to her, IMO, do not bode well for others females who wish to run for POTUS in the future.

75. You can bet on it buddy. If you are under 40, you will see a female AND an African American Pres.
This is a banner year.

The seed has been sown.

God help us, we will see one of these in November.

89. Yes, we will elect a woman President
Off the top of my head, the UK and Germany have had women leaders and I'm sure there are others.

The country has shown that it is ready to elect the best leader, regardless of gender or race. Look at the record turnouts during this race. I have no doubt we will elect a woman President soon and many more in the future.

I look forward to it!

91. I'd no sooner vote for a closed government Democratic woman than I would a man
who protected the secrecy and privilege of closed government.

I wouldn't have voted for Margaret Thatcher in the 80s, either - would YOU?

Most of the rest of the world believes the US is a RACIST country - think of the savings of many billions of dollars and decades of diplomacy all in day one of President Obama's administration.

or as mutually exclusive.

As long as the DEMOCRAT wins, we all win. Because most likely the Dem nominee will be African-American. If/when he wins the White House, we'll have our first ever African-American president.

I think in a country with the history we've got, that'll be something to be very proud of! And we'll have a female president someday, of that I have no doubt. Just not this one.

Not in my life time or my daughters. It's soooo sad, especially when I heard all my life, "If we ever had a woman president, how different things would be."

Thanks for posting!
