Guess BHO did not quite have his new pander story memorized! I am sure it went better today.

...............

…… Sitting on a picnic bench in a park on Pagoda Street, Indianapolis, in discussion with a group of 30 supporters, he told a story about the "modest" background of himself and his wife, Michelle.

And 10 minutes later, seemingly having forgotten, he told them it all again.

Obama's wife joins push to court working class

By Caren Bohan 1 hour, 54 minutes ago

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - If Michelle Obama had her way, her husband Barack would be a teacher, a writer, a singer, a dancer -- anything but a politician with the chance to make history as the first black president of the United States.

She described to an audience in Indianapolis how they struggled, like any other young couple in Middle America, to raise two children and pay off debts.

"We are still so close to the lives that most Americans are living," she said. "And I don't know about you but for most of my lifetime, I've felt disconnected from Washington."

The Obamas hope the "regular guy" narrative will resonate with the white working class voters that the Illinois senator has had trouble winning over and who may be the key to his White House bid.

…………………….
"We're a young couple with small kids with all the challenges and the emotions and the stresses that come with raising kids, like being a working mom," said Michelle Obama, 44, who is on leave from her job as hospital administrator and now divides her time between campaigning and raising the couple's two daughters -- Sasha, 6, and Malia, 9.

Though she is a Harvard-trained lawyer like her 46-year-old husband, she said the couple was not far from the years of paying off student loans and working to "keep up with bills."

The Obamas brought in $4.2 million last year, according to their tax returns. Most of the money came from royalties on Barack Obama's two bestselling books. The couple moved into the millionaire category a few years ago, moving up from their previous six-figure income.

'THE CYNIC IN THE FAMILY'
………….

"I've spent my life trying to convince him not to be a politician. Teach, write, sing, dance -- I don't care what you do. Don't do this. These people are mean."

…….

Barack Obama's task of courting working class voters was made more difficult by comments he made last month at a San Francisco fundraiser about "bitter" small-town voters. His rivals said the comments suggested he was "out of touch."

…………

The sometimes blunt-spoken Michelle Obama grew up on the South Side of Chicago, raised by her father, a city worker, and her mother, a secretary and then a stay-at-home mom.

………..

But she has stirred controversy, such as when she said in February: "For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country." Critics said the comment sounded unpatriotic and suggested she had not been proud of her country before her husband's candidacy.

……….
The Obamas on Wednesday visited the Beech Grove, Indiana home of Cheryl and Mike Fischer for a lunch of sandwiches and potato chips.

………………..

A NC voter sizes up Obama, Clinton, and finally decides

By ANN SANNER, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

As a clinical research consultant working in North Carolina's Research Triangle, Meribeth Howlett knows how to get to the bottom of things.

Her latest project was deciding whether to vote for Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primary Tuesday. Now she's made her choice and voted by absentee ballot.

………

In the last few days, Howlett decided "I've heard enough from the pundits" and began reviewing campaign literature with the practiced eye of one who reads medical charts and oversees clinical trials.
………….

Howlett's account:

"OK — I made a decision, but I should say up front that I'd be happy to vote for either Hillary or Barack. However, I voted for Hillary Clinton. Yes, I've been on Web sites and found the two to have plans that are remarkably similar and so it came down to a more philosophical decision, who do I BELIEVE will do a better job. Because Barack Obama identifies himself as the best candidate to be an agent of 'real change in Washington,' I was expecting to see some details outlining innovative plans to achieve change, but I did not see anything that stood out as greatly different from what Hillary proposes.

"Hillary has deep roots in D.C. and that has pros-cons. I am viewing it as a positive in that I believe she understands how to navigate the system to make changes (as well as knowing what won't work). Another plus for me is that she has spent more time than any of the candidates researching the health care issue and can build on what she learned back when her husband was president.

…………..
"I will confess that I'm saddened that I'll be lumped in the polls as just another middle-aged white female voting for Hillary since it has absolutely nothing to do with gender or ethnicity."
…………

103. Samuel Johnson 1774 The Patriot and you.
Edited on Thu May-01-08 10:48 PM by Boz
A patriot is he whose publick conduct is regulated by one single motive, the love of his country; who, as an agent in parliament, has, for himself, neither hope nor fear, neither kindness nor resentment, but refers every thing to the common interest.

Let us take a patriot, where we can meet him; and, that we may not flatter ourselves by false appearances, distinguish those marks which are certain, from those which may deceive; for a man may have the external appearance of a patriot, without the constituent qualities; as false coins have often lustre, though they want weight.

Some claim a place in the list of patriots, by an acrimonious and unremitting opposition

This mark is by no means infallible. Patriotism is not necessarily included in rebellion. A man may hate his king, yet not love hius country. He that has been refused a reasonable, or unreasonable request, who thinks his merit underrated, and sees his influence declining, begins soon to talk of natural equality, the absurdity of "many made for one," the original compact, the foundation of authority, and the majesty of the people. As his political melancholy increases, he tells, and, perhaps, dreams, of the advances of the prerogative, and the dangers of arbitrary power; yet his design, in all his declamation, is not to benefit his country, but to gratify his malice.

Their patriotism is a species of disease; and they feel some part of what they express. But the greater, far the greater number of those who rave and rail, and inquire and accuse, neither suspect nor fear, nor care for the publick; but hope to force their way to riches, by virulence and invective, and are vehement and clamorous, only that they may be sooner hired to be silent.

A man sometimes starts up a patriot, only by disseminating discontent, and propagating reports of secret influence, of dangerous counsels, of violated rights, and encroaching usurpation.

This practice is no certain note of patriotism. To instigate the populace with rage beyond the provocation, is to suspend publick happiness, if not to destroy it. He is no lover of his country, that unnecessarily disturbs its peace. Few errours and few faults of government, can justify an appeal to the rabble; who ought not to judge of what they cannot understand, and whose opinions are not propagated by reason, but caught by contagion.

No less truer today on the internet than it was over 200 years ago.

123. Actually, I do
I point it out to both the Obama folks and the Hillary folks.

Even though I finally chose Obama over Hillary (neither was my first or second choice and I remained undecided for a long time), my opinion on how to properly debate the candidates and the issues has not changed. Some folks call me a "party" prole, but nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm a Democrat who remembers that we in the past have spiritedly and politely debated the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates, but were always ultimately united behind them all. Good manners and an increased chance of actually winning the election against the Republicans are my goals.

I see little of that from the zealots on either side. Snide, hateful, sarcastic, hurtful sniping, zeroing in on human flaws in a candidate, associating candidates with "bad" news, and other tactics should belong to the Republicans. All this energy we are spending should be directed toward McCain.

The zealots here are doing the Republicans' job for them. It makes us all look very stupid.

105. But what are you getting for your 18 cents a gallon?
The McCain proposal would bring the Highway Trust Fund, which finances Federal highway, highway safety, and transit infrastructure investments, to the edge of insolvency. It would cut Highway Trust Fund revenues by almost $3 billion per month. Under current law funding, that will create an estimated $12 billion shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund by the end of fiscal year 2009.

This shortfall will have very real, devastating effects for hundreds of thousands of American families. McCain’s proposal will eliminate approximately 300,000 family-wage, highway construction-related jobs. It comes at a time when, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1.2 million construction workers are already unemployed. In fact, the construction sector has the highest unemployment rate (12 percent) of any industrial sector.

18. This is another "sniper fire" response...albeit, I believe, a more thoughtful one.
Clinton completely fabricated a story and told it four times. When *gasp* video surfaced that directly contradicted her story she stated that she was tired and misspoke. She has yet to address why she was "tired" and "misspoke" four times.

Obama told a true story. He told it twice. It was true both times. Yes, the fact that he told the same story in a 10-minute period indicates fatigue...but, as it was a true story, it indicates real fatigue as opposed to Clinton's "I was so tired that I completely made up an event that never happened" "fatigue".

Do you really want to go here?

72. The sniper-fire issue is just one of my favorites...it illustrates SO many things.
It illustrates how Clinton will say anything to sway voters.

It illustrates that Clinton obviously doesn't think things through, because she had to know that there was contradicting video (not to mention other witnesses), yet she told this story four times.

It illustrates that Clinton is truly incapable of a mea culpa. Like her IWR vote, she won't ever admit a mistake, she always attempts to justify it.

...and lying about being under hostile fire is a very real detriment when your opponent is recognized as a war hero.

"Sniper Fire" is a fun thing to say, but I feel it's too good to waste. It's not just a buzzword(s), it's a microcosm of why Clinton is everything I detest...and why she won't win a general election against McCain.

98. You're not answering the question. She said she misspoke because she was tired.
She completely failed to address the three other times she made the same statement. Why should "mature folks" accept this?

This wasn't a botched statistic...this was a COMPLETE fabrication. None of it actually happened. That's not a "misstatement", it's a blatant lie. Even if she only told the story once when she was tired, as she claims, it's still a lie. Being tired doesn't make you completely fabricate entire sequences of events.

I know you said that you wouldn't respond to any posts about "sniper" stuff. If you want to hold to that, that's fine. However, your OP invited this response. Don't attribute negative character to another candidate's statements unless you're prepared to discuss the even more questionable statements your own candidate has made.

That's not CHANGE. It's REPUBLICAN.

People like Howlette need to pay a bit more attention to the candidates and how they CONDUCT themselves and their campaigns before they vote. Hers was one of ignorance, I'm sorry to say.

Y'know, there is a bright side to all the blind anti-Hillary rage here. It keeps them all in one easily-avoided location.
