Could latest Wright flap HELP Obama? (as in backlash)
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 09:59 AM by npincus
To the surprise of the punditocracy, you'll remember that Obama's national poll numbers barely registered a response to the initial Wright flap. The establishment view was that the public did not hold Wright's words against Obama in terms of their support for his candidacy, and they were also similarly accepting of his speech on race. (Of course, Hillary supporters and GOP enthusiasts excluded). The bottom line: the public largely rejected the MSM narrative that Wright was poison to Obama's candidacy.

Well, now on the heels of his loss in Pa., with pundits spinning like centrifuges that Obama has lost whites, you-know-who comes out of the woodwork!

Is it then possible that the same public that stuck with Obama through the first Wright episode, who evaluated that his association with the man did not persuade to reject him as a candidate, will hold the same view? Even more so, will they be offended by the possible destructive intent of Wright (toward Obama's campaign) and likewise offended and annoyed by the latest round of media overkill? Why would the public render a different judgment on the same matter than they did the first time? The MSM's pastor-gasm and non-stop pastor-gating serves their narrative of a real horse race-- they are only praying for a precipitous drop in Obama's support and a bloody convention fight.

Let's just see if the public surprises the pundits. We are political junkies here, living and breathing each unfolding event in real time. Most Americans are not. Let's see if Obama supporters or those leaning that way who have a more casual interest in politics watch the Wright coverage and say, "Not this again. Why doesn't this guy go away?", even get a little irritated at the media pile-on. ((As we all suffer from the high price of food, utilities, gas, mortgage, and think about the stupidity of an endless Iraq occupation).

2. I called a good friend of mine yesterday
She's pretty sharp and keeps up with the news. Listens to NPR every day, reads the paper, but not a political junkie like the typical DUer.

I asked her what she thought of Rev. Wright and, while she was aware of who he was, she didn't know too much about the whole thing. I thought it was interesting because it's not like the media she consumes hasn't been reporting extensively on it. I guess she doesn't find it all that interesting. She's also the 'typical' Hillary supporter, in that she likes Barack just fine and will vote for him in November if he's the nominee.

Sometimes it's good to get the 'non-junkie' perspective.

4. If she truly...
...did not "know too much about the whole thing" like you say, she's not as sharp as you think she is.

6. WRONG.

The HRC and Obama supporters at DU, numbering in the thousands, do not represent the MILLIONS of Americans who care enough to have an opinion and to vote, but are not living and breathing this primary. They are more concerned about the problems in their personal, work and economic lives. Wright's blatherings do not put gas in their car or pay their mortgage. If they like Obama's policy positions, and respect his wisdom and judgment in his opposition to the Iraq War FROM THE BEGINNING (not a latecomer, like your candidate)-- do they really give a rat's ass about the return of the same guy they didn't think about last month?

3. So far no drop in Rasmussen tracking
Obama is steady against Clinton, leads McCain by 2, and favorability is up from yesterday.

5. Wright is big fat media flame bait
and all the hacks, flaks, paid pundits and HRC operatives
flew right at it like bugs to a candle. I believe it says more
about "them" and speaks volumes about their very worst instincts.
It's not a very good time for bad people with thinly veiled agendas.
Like the final violent throes of a mindset that is grossly outmoded,
these spastic outbursts of vitriol are just the wail of inevitable doom.
Losers : - )))

7. Actually, this latest flap may help, because anyone honest knows Wright threw Obama under the bus
It is now CRYSTAL clear, if it wasn't before, that the two men share very different views.
