Has Hillary's tough talk increased pain at the pump?
Commentary: Blaming saber rattling for latest leg up in oil prices
Last Update: 9:03 AM ET Apr 23, 2008

LONDON (MarketWatch) — An economist at London's Lombard Street Research has raised the interesting possibility that Hillary Clinton's recent aggressive comments towards Iran helped oil break come within a breath of $120 a barrel.
In a daily note headlined "Clinton helps oil vault to $120," Charles Dumas suggests rising gas prices will boost the consumer price index by 1%, deepen the recession and weigh on prospects for the S&P (SPX:S&P 500 Index

Dumas acknowledges that the U.S. Federal Reserve has been playing a role in oil's rise by cheapening the dollar with big interest rate cuts. He adds that routine supply-and-demand is having an effect on oil prices as well.
But he notes that speculative financial positions in oil are affected by geopolitical fears stoked by comments such as Clinton's last week about how she would "totally obliterate" Iran if it were to attack Israel.
"There are few things less impressive than strong words from a weak person," Dumas says of Clinton's comments.
Nevertheless, all of this is still bad news for those "Reagan Democrats" who supported Clinton over Barack Obama in the Pennsylvania primary, since they will now find themselves paying more for gasoline and everything else, while spending even more time on unemployment.
But while it may or may not be true that Clinton's comments are really having the effect Dumas describes, her advisers should probably take some comfort from the suggestion that the world still takes her campaign seriously enough to worry about what she says.

7. Since the price of oil has risen to astronomical levels over the course of
Bush's term in office, I doubt that Hillary's comments had much, if any, effect.

10. Her pledge of genocide as our response to a regional
conflict has to be music to our lame ass president's ears. He has a Democrat beating his war drum for him.

12. The only thing increasing pain at the pump is speculation
Stop buying any investment vehicle that profits from a rise in oil prices and watch how fast the prices come down. OPEC isn't cutting production.
