To Small Town Pennsylvania from A San Francisco Liberal.
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 04:13 PM by sfexpat2000
They're at it again, the politicians, trying to make us think we're not only not on the same side, but that we have nothing in common and that we wouldn't even like each other if we met up, by accident, in line at the grocery store. Who they think this will benefit is beyond me -- except, it probably won't be us. Any of us.

If you've never been to San Francisco, you might not know that it is a small city and that it feels like a small town community for those of us who try to keep the place running. We're on the coast and get new families all the time but, the same families have been in our police and fire fighter forces for generations. The same families have been grocers and butchers, carpenters, beekeepers and teachers -- except for those that are getting squeezed out of their family businesses by retail chains. San Francisco liberals have to band together and fight tooth and nail to protect our family owned businesses, our open spaces and our local public schools, just like you do.

We have to fight developers who prey on our community just like all working people do nowadays. They come here and see a business opportunity to build expensive housing none of us can afford, hotels for tourists and office space for businessmen who need to be local for their China or South America trade. These developers don't realize (or, likely don't care) that they're pricing our working families out of the market, causing our taxes to go higher than we can afford or tearing down housing that will wind up putting people on the street with nowhere to go. San Francisco liberals, these days, spend a lot of time just trying to keep people in their homes when we're not fighting to hold on to our own homes.

My dog is a hunting dog. We don't exactly hunt anything because I'm one of those people that would most likely shoot her own foot off if you put a gun in my hands but you can't take the hunt out of the dog. Instead, I use her nose to find animals that dispossessed families have dumped in parking lots and in the park in their desperation over not being able to provide for them any more. The dog sniffs them out and I set traps for them. There is a large colony of abandoned cats now in Golden Gate Park and if you saw them, your heart would break because although there are some feral ones, there are many who don't know why their family dropped them off in this coyote rich environment. They only know they went from being someone's pet to being some animal's potential dinner.

I know we're supposed to be "godless" here -- that's one of the things you're supposed to think of when someone says "San Francisco liberal" -- but nothing could be further from the truth. There are four places of worship within a half mile of my home and a lot of city business is conducted through the network these congregations form. The biggest, most beautiful piece of architecture you can see from my kitchen window is St. Cecelia's and there are two modest storefronts used by evangelical congregations on the streetcar line a block away. You might have heard of Glide Memorial Church. Even those of us who aren't everyday churchgoing people go there to sit and listen and sing and volunteer with the work the church does among the poor. Or, we are the poor. Either way. Glide is part of the backbone of this city. We don't make a big deal out of this. We don't talk about it very well but, that's the truth.

It really upsets me to hear the talking heads and certain politicians say "San Francisco liberals" as if we all have high paying jobs at Apple Computer, drive big cars, make too much money and spend our free time finding fault with the rest of the country. We are losing jobs just like everyone else. Our clinics are closing just like they are everywhere else. (The average waiting time in our local Emergency Room is eight hours. Bring a book.) Everything we need to survive is going up in price while our wages lag behind and while the dollar falls. Poverty is doing good business in this town. And our kids are leaving because they can't manage here and are forced to leave family and friends behind to go somewhere else where wages keep up better with prices. Where they have a chance to have a livelihood they can sustain.

"San Francisco liberals" are the service workers that say goodbye to these young people, their children. The ones who fight the special interests at City Hall to try to keep our family businesses open when those big chains try to buy their way in. The ones that walk picket lines when our few remaining unions need help because foreign interests seem to get more attention from our government than our working families do.

We may do it dressed in pink or with funny hair or big angry signs, but that's all we're really doing. We're trying to keep this town for our families, for our neighborhoods just like most of you are doing, when either of us have the energy to borrow from our working lives to share.

That's who San Francisco "liberals" are. Nice to meet you.

Belatedly, this post is for Chris, who opened my eyes to what all of us are truly up against.

and the 'post religious-right America' the subtitle mentions WILL be a fulfilled prophesy if it isn't already. Rightwingnuts are leaving that sinking ship in droves. The only problem is we have to put up with sniping newbies now seeking assimilaiton into DU from Freeper sites !

We'll have to forgive our weaker brothers and keep the civility but as long as HRC gives them a shot at their goal of getting McCain and 'Bush III' into office we cannot let our guards down.

BTW, GO GIANTS !

113. this very-small-town rural western Pennsylvanian agrees
Most of my Pennsylvanian friends and family are voting for Obama, oh yes even the ones with strong beliefs in guns and religion.

We don't appreciate anyone from anywhere spinning what Obama meant or telling us how to feel about it. We can draw our own conclusions from his actual words, actions, background, platform, etc. It's really condescending for anyone to "explain these things to us" as if we're too dumb to understand.

If you ever come across anyone who tries to tell you different, you've gotta know, they are either ignorant or they have an agenda and that's all.

Haven't been out in a few years, but it is one of my favorite cities. On the other hand, LA, not so much. :P

I do sense the community feel to the area and it is fantastic. I've always felt very welcomed there. I like walking down to the Wharf and watching the seals. Breathing in the fresh ocean air. Just walking the streets and looking at the phenomenal architecture can take a week!

Shout out from south-eastern PA, current residence. You all may get a bum rap, but as someone who has spent time in both places -- we aren't all that different. Trust me.

25. Thank you for pointing this out, of course most people know this
but it is almost always diminished by the media.

I know how you feel about your city. I have read some of your post about looking out for the less fortunate among your city. You have a big heart, and I :applause: your efforts.

It really is a sad day in America when the "Real Elitist" i.e. the media Spundits try and belittle us working poor. They sit in the Ivory Towers and tell us how lucky we are, and yet they don't have a clue what it means to struggle to make ends meet. They don't have to worry about Health care, soaring gas prices, which affect food prices, or their children's educations they can afford to send them to private schools and then to expensive universities, or their McMansion mortgages, the list goes on and on.

I had the opportunity to visit San Fran in '94 and wanted to move there, but never having the funds to do so. It is a beautiful city. I could tell from my brief visit that there were people who were struggling to survive. It's never easy, especially in this day and time no matter where one resides.

sfexpat2000, you are a hero for speaking the truth. Thank you:hug:

39. It's so funny because kids raised in cities dream of hayseeds.
When I was a little girl, I used to make believe that I lived on a farm. I'd haul chairs and blankets and pots out to the yard and pretend I was Laura Ingalls Wilder. I froze my @ss off in the cold foggy weather, but it was our favorite game.

And even later than that, my first serious boyfriend and I would pour over seed catalogs and plan to buy a farm. Everyone else in Silicon Valley was planning to buy a mainframe. We were studying seed catalogs and planning our money making crops. I didn't get to do that with him, but Chris did it, in Oregon.

Our families share many more concerns than we have attitudes that politicians can use to divide us. I hope we can hang onto that. :)

I certain parts of this country go down we all go down if one state has problems it will effect all because those same people will drift to wherever they are along with some of those problems. Some of these same people who have been running around talking about Democracy in other countries don't want it here for some in this country. Take off the blinders America it is about WE THE PEOPLE!

59. We are all suffering
I live in the Central Valley about 50 miles from the East Bay Are in California. People here are losing their homes left and right and those that are not and have to commute to the Bay are suffering because of gas prices. Why did I move out so far from the city. I could not afford the homes there. Now I can't afford the gas to get to work. The cost of living in California especially the Bay Area is really high. So county me in as one of the angry that can feel your pain. I went to Jackson the other day and gas was $3.95 per gallon and that was regular. Diesel is $4.26 and the truckers are suffering. We all should say, "we're angry and we're not going to take it anymore".

62. Welcome to DU, truth please.
I have a lot of friends who moved to the Central Valley to find affordable housing and who now commute and who share your situation.

Gas is nearly $5 in town right now.

The idea that somehow "San Francisco liberals" aren't facing the same problems that Americans in other parts of the country are is just not true. The higher wages here barely keep up with the higher prices. In fact, they don't.

All of us, small towns, cities, suburbs, we're all in the same boat. In SF (like everywhere else) we're fighting budget cuts to our public schools, which don't deserve the bad rap they sometimes get. We're struggling like the rest of the country to survive in this economy, educate our kids, put food on the table. And it doesn't help that gas prices are through the roof.

And to top it all off, if we don't fight this, we're about to be sprayed with pesticides.

without the Bay Area, Dems would have a 2 seat majority.

i don't think there's a large area in the country that sends as many Democrats to Congress, shutting out the Republicans as the Bay Area does.

and we don't sully our delegation with even one Republican.

Heck, even many of those working at places like Apple are liberals and also getting pushed out due to high costs in that area.

Now of course I live in that "Danger Zone" in San Diego near Miramar that Duke Cunningham flew us into with the messes he was at the center of... Sigh. Miss the days when I could just talk in a cafe in Santa Cruz and not feel that much risk of an attack by a wingnut there, but instead of a way of building a community consciousness.

Thanks for the post. That's what pisses me off most about "bitter-gate" - every election, the RW, and the MSM convince us that these issues - god, guns, gays - represent insurmountable differences that separate us.

As your post so eloquently illustrates, whether we live in San Francisco, or Pennsylvania, or Iowa, or Florida, or anyplace else, we all have similar concerns that we can address if we don't let "them" divide us.

The only thing I hate about you San Franciscans is that you get to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Damn you, San Franciscans!!!!!

We have to learn how to deal with bullies wherever we are.

Hint:

Hit back immediately with everything you've got. Don't ignore organized bullying tactics until it's too late and they've got the nation by the balls.

Don't ever let bullies frame the conversation. Take back the true meaning of "liberal", "San Francisco" etcetera.

In Europe, the city of San Francisco has always stood for the most creative cutting edge expressions of American enterprise, music and culture. Now... not so much. But we'll change that, all of us together.

Yes, we can! Si, se puede! Ja, wir schaffen es! Qui, nous sommes l'esprit!

But in real life, he is turning up in more lucrative venues: The candidate will be around here on April 6, at a series of events that includes three $2,300-a-head maximum-strength fundraisers: Sara and Sohaib Abbasi are throwing a luncheon in Atherton; he'll zip up to Nancy and Bob Farese's house in Kentfield in mid-afternoon; and proceed from there to Ann and Gordon Getty's in San Francisco. (There's also a mere $1,000-a-person do at the home of Carolyn Davis and Alex Mehran that night.)

Your trusty party-animal-by-proxy has tried to infiltrate these events, but transparency seems to be fogged up. No media eyes allowed on the collection kettles; when the gifts are big, the press is barred.

On April 6, 2008, Barack Obama visited the San Francisco region, zipping from event to event all day long, from one end of the Bay Area to the other.

What? you might ask. How did I miss that? If only I had known, I would have gone to see him.

Well, there's a reason you didn't know about it. Obama didn't want you to know about it. Because the events he was attending weren't for people like you.

P.S.: Christina Orth, who attended an open San Francisco Symphony rehearsal Thursday, left Davies Hall promoting "Obama for President, Dudamel for Vice President." http://www.sfisonline.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2008/03/26/DDMKVPJT1.DTL

Obama's campaign slogan is "Change" -- declaring that he alone will change the way things are done in politics.

But what kind of "change" is this? The single most insidious aspect of American politics is that candidates often must pander to and do the bidding of the wealthiest Americans, who have the funds to get the candidate elected. It's so commonplace, we no longer think of it as "corruption," but that's basically what it is. So when Obama spends all day doing nothing but going to a series of private fundraisers populated exclusively by the wealthy, the only "change" I feel are the coins jangling at the bottom of my pocket.

And I don't like hypocrisy.

According to this article (and many others), Obama's campaign is claiming he raises his money from small donors:..

Wait just a minute there. If you do the math, on just this one day in the Bay Area, Obama went to four events, three of which had $2,300 minimum donations per ticket, and the other $1,000 minimum per ticket. Each of the events, from the various descriptions, held as many as 400 people (the Getty mansion has a ballroom that reportedly seats at least 300). 400 x $2,300 = $920,000 per event, times three events = $2.76 million, plus the other event, which undoubtedly puts him over $3 million in contributions for this one day alone. And who knows how many other similar days he schedules in other parts of the country. http://www.zombietime.com/obama_visits_billionaires_row/

Here are the real regular people, running their asses off parking all the limos

Norman Stone, heir to insurance tycoon W. Clement Stone, 27xx Broadway.
Peter Haus, Levi Strauss heir, 28xx Broadway. In 1996, Haas' Levi holdings were valued in a news report at $2.2 billion.
Peter Sperling, U. of Phoenix heir, 28xx Broadway. In 2003 he had about $1.5 billion.
Larry Ellison, Oracle founder, 28xx Broadway. In 2003 Forbes set his worth at $18 billion.
Gordon Getty, Getty Oil heir, 28xx Broadway. In 2003 Forbes Magazine estimated his fortune at $2.1 billion.
George Jewett, Weyerhaeuser heir, 29xx Broadway.

These aren't apts

The awful view from the homes to remind these people how bad they have it

Notice the weight of the ring on the right hand of one the common folk causes her to lean to one side, back problems in this area are epidemic

Obama enters through servants entrance to observe clingy behavior

Notice the diverse crowd, but only from a distance.

This is where Obama had hoped to have a private conversation to say this about small town people-
You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, a lot of them -- like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they've gone through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, and they cling to guns, or religion, or antipathy toward people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

128. Outstanding post, sfexpat!
I've never been to San Francisco, but I believe the point of your post is a fundamental truth about much of stereotyped America.

I believe it's the corrupt and the cynical that would rather have us magnify our differences than focus on our many commonalities. They live under the divide and conquer mantra and division is their ultimate tactic to rule. In the long run the American People as a whole pay a heavy price for this vacuum of honest leadership.

135. When you hear a campaign saying, he can't get the Latino vote
or the Jewish vote or the working class white vote, you know EXACTLY that we are being set against each other. We need to keep pushing back on those toxins.

133. San Francisco is amazing
because it has to be the most diverse city, with all the smaller communities in and around. I got to visit for a while last year, and being from rural Louisiana, I had never been around so much diversity at one time (especially while riding BART) it's like a little America inside of America.. it was awesome. :)

It is like a little America, isn't it? Maybe that's why we're targeted for purposes of divisiveness by politicians so much.

140. Polarization and division have been the keystones of politics over the last 8 years. Wish
more people could read your post...wish fewer would see differences as wedge opportunities that diminish us all. Thanks for the post from small town boy (Redding, CA) who now lives in OC (we have our own stereotypes!) with kids going to college at Berkeley.

144. They love it. I AM proud of them, not just for good grades, but for
immersing themselves in Berkeley and SF.....concerts, protests, volunteering, performances, diverse student population, "out-there" professors, etc.. It's been a great experience for them so far (freshmen). They've photographed the islamo-fascist week protests and the marine recruitment center protests....

I forwarded one of your posts to them some time ago...impeachment at the beach, I think.

I hope they can make it.

Berkeley was a great experience for me. I moved there as a re-entry student in my last 20s, and hauled my husband and two boys with me. What a great town.

That freshman year can be a bear, lol. Good to hear they've jumped right in. :)
