So here's what Barack's dumbass comment cost the Democratic party
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 11:14 PM by Cronus Protagonist
{Sent to me as a long-term Republican supporter... - I'm a spy, and this ball is going to be kicked all the way through the general election - they're framing him into this right now}

Dear Friends,

We've all said things that we've regretted. Sometimes they result from a mere slip of the tongue and sometimes they reveal deeply held beliefs that you'd rather not communicate to the world.

A few days ago, at a San Francisco fundraiser, Barack Obama described Americans who live in small towns or other areas that have experienced a loss of jobs as "bitter" people, adding that it didn't surprise him that they, "..cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

These words are revealing on a number of levels, and expose the out-of-touch beliefs to which John McCain offers stark contrast. Today, John McCain offered a different account of small town America:

"During the Great Depression, with many millions of Americans out of work and the country suffering the worst economic crisis in our history, there rose from small towns, rural communities, inner cities, a generation of Americans who fought to save the world from despotism and mass murder, and came home to build the wealthiest, strongest and most generous nation on earth.

They suffered the worst during the Depression, but it did not shake their faith in, and fidelity to, America. They did not turn to their religious faith and cultural traditions out of resentment and a feeling of powerlessness to affect the course of government or pursue prosperity. On the contrary, their faith had given generations of their families' purpose and meaning, as it does today."

These hard working men and women aren't "bitter". They love their country, their faith, their family and their traditions. They are the heart and soul of this country, the foundation of our strength and the primary authors of its essential goodness - Barack Obama should get to know them.

If Barack Obama is the Democrat nominee in the general election, the American people will have a clear choice between two different visions - Senator Obama's liberal, elitist philosophy and John McCain's faith in the small town values that continue to make America great. John McCain will not forget them or write them off. Neither should Barack Obama.

We are up against a large fundraising hurdle if Barack Obama is the nominee and we need your help now. Even before the general election begins, the differences are clear, we must do everything we can to make sure these beliefs don't make it into the White House.

I hope you will make a contribution today.

Sincerely,

Rick Davis
Campaign Manager

P.S. - Barack Obama's belief that small town Americans are "bitter" exemplifies the differences in this election. We cannot allow this elitist philosophy to make its way into the White House. Please contribute today.

Besides, if there's nothing wrong with what he said (as per 98% of Obama supporters here), why does it need to blow over? (Keep telling yourself that, too.)

We could've had a truly GREAT candidate. Sadly, the last two standing are not great.

and a lot of people in the Democratic Leadership Council and its leading think tank the Progressive Policy Institute get their funding from the same RW sources as neoconservatives Mike and his lovely wife Barb...

I've had my fill of hearing those kind of talking points and tactics coming from HRC and her husband both DLC elitists-I'm one of the independent bitter traditional FDR, Kennedy, McGovern, Feingold, Kucinich supporters for Obama.

But you never heard of the Ledeens in your political life-ok...have you heard of Will Marshall or Al From?

Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 12:46 AM by Cronus Protagonist
I don't care about them and I never called them into question. You, however, appear to have issues around that area. I wish you well with them.

Meanwhile the OP is about how the Republicans are now framing Barack Obama, how clearly potent it is going to be.

I thought that perhaps this "insider document" might give you a sense of the fact that the more Obama uses big words and shades or layers of nuance will distance him from his populist message. He will be framed as "an elite liberal communist who'se out of touch with the American people and they already know it, the American people do", and the GOP's mighty Wurlitzer will crank out clips of Obama saying three syllable words and getting all testy on TV about being misquoted and mis-interpreted and how what he really meant was...insert meme here... It will be a bloodbath. I'm not making any comments or support to Hillary. I think we need Gore or Edwards to sort this out. This is not going to be easy.

24. Finally some insight into Republicans
""During the Great Depression, with many millions of Americans out of work and the country suffering the worst economic crisis in our history, there rose from small towns, rural communities, inner cities, a generation of Americans who fought to save the world from despotism and mass murder, and came home to build the wealthiest, strongest and most generous nation on earth."

So the Republican's plan for small town America is to let the recession to turn into a depression, then have a world war, and then everyone can come home and rebuild the country. Sounds like a solid plan.

You care about their feelings and such, how sweet of you. Maybe you can ask then to suckle in your bosom and quietly tell them that it is ok.

Why do I give a shit what a repig plans on doing with this Obama comment? This is expected of them isn't it? What is not expected is for another dem to jump on the repig bandwagon and use repig talking points, too bad Hillary didn't get that memo.

And they all seem to be Obama supporters. Why is that? I mean when you drop pearls into someone's lap, I would expect they might say, Gosh, you're right, this needs serious damage control, but instead they attack the messenger and toss the pearls away. That kind of attitude is clearly a losing one.

So overblown and contrived. It's demeaning and disrespectful

It prompted me to make my first donation to his campaign

Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 11:29 PM by jzodda
Thats why this will blow off very easily. People ARE angry, and more angry now then probably at any time since the great depression. This doesn't anger most people, since most people feel exactly that way in both parties, and independents.

McCain's campaign is in danger of fundamentally misreading the mood of the electorate, so they can fund raise away.

It was standard Hawkeye State stumping—until the senator took a stab at sympathizing with farmers whose crop prices have stagnated. "Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?" he asked. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20226452/site/newsweek/

recorded the comments surreptitiously, then publicized them, all in the hopes of taking down the presumptive nominee for the benefit of her candidate. Clinton is now playing up those comments and deliberately misreading them.

I'd say the Clinton camp is costing the democrats the election, not Obama.

of Republicans turning the truth on it's head. People came out of the Great Depression without bitterness because of the "socialist" actions taken by Roosevelt and the Democratic Party. And it is going to take actions just as dramatic to save the country from the results of right-wing malfeasance this time around.

...back during the Great Depression. Because the Greatest Generation had rock-solid faith in the US government and capitalism. Or sumptin'...

And we rose up because we were attacked and warred upon, not because we just loved our country so gosh-durn much we just WILLED the Depression and Dust Bowl away with good vibes and a smile.

The more comfortable and secure people are in their lives and in their positions in the community, the less they go to church. Western Europe has very low church-attendence rates, while ours is very high. And we've been throwing our country in the shitter since Reagan, so there ya go.
