133. No, "cold drink" really meant what I would now call a soda.
It would be like a Coke or Pepsi. Not iced tea or milk. It would have bubbles and be flavored. Of course, in those days we didn't have flavored waters the way we do now (I'm talking about the fifties!). We had tap water, milk, tea, coffee and "cold drinks."

110. Depends who you are.
I am from Chicago too, and I hear both. In fact growing up I called it "pop" then my bf when I was 16 said "pop" was wrong and forced me to call it "soda". 4 years later, my new bf now fiance, has made me change back to "pop". It is really quite confusing.
Just to satisfy my own curiosity, does anyone else's parents or they themselves say "ice box" for a refrigerator? I can't tell you how often I got made fun of for that one. . . I have now changed my ways.

I can't believe I got caught up in them, but I did. For the record, yes, we had bb's back in '68 in the Boston area, and I posted a memoir from a student at U of Indiana back in '65 who actually mentioned that some radical, anti-war students there were well known for their "green bookbags." and we had to bring home our brown bags to reuse them.

And I did have a thermos (a really short, fat one) for soup in the winter - and if you dropped it, the glass inside would break and you had to throw it away!

I don't recall seeing them until the 70s ... when I saw my cousin's WW2-era messenger's pouch. (War surplus was a popular fashion with the high school peacenik faddists.)

In the '60s I carried them in my arms and in the 70s I had a messenger type shoulder bag. At the same time, I don't doubt there were people using bookbags before I was. This is one of those topics, except for a bit of reasonably interesting fashion history, that is mostly about taking up time and energy.

YES there were bookbags in the 60s.
Even if there weren't maybe she meant her purse or satchel or hobo stick with a sack on the end.

Regardless, this one is SILLY. We as Obama supporters need to let this one go. It makes us look petty and stupid.

32. Yes!!!! I checked ebay Saturday. They had one from 1917. The reason
why people didn't use them is because they weren't sturdy and didn't last very long. I had one before 1968. It lasted about a week.

41. Think about it. The reason people didn't use them was because they
weren't practical. They could only hold a couple of books or maybe a looseleaf notebook and one book. When people posted pictures Saturday of students on campus carrying books in their arms, notice how big a pile of books they were all carrying. The bookbags back then didn't handle those types of loads. So why bother?

76. true story
long ago, when I was a young private in the Army, my sergeant major took my room mate and I fishing.

I was stationed in Germany then.

He hooked me up, baited my hook, and the first thing I caught was a carp.

It was fucking HUGE. And the ugliest fish I had ever seen. It looked like a swamp monster!!

That fish was 50 percent lips and 50 percent body!!

I started screaming, when I saw what I had reeled it. It was freakin hilarious

Needless to say he never took us fishing again :)

85. There was already a thread on this a few days ago.
It was stupid then and it is stupid now. Of course we had book bags in the 60's. What are Abrams viewers smoking? Do we hate her so much that we would deny that the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King would not be upsetting to her? That horrible event in history was felt deeply by most Americans. I think it is pretty low to try to determine if we carried book bags in the 60's to refute the story of her reaction.

88. My aunt had a satchel back in 1949
for her first day of school. She'd told me her story of her new satchel on my first day of school (back in the late 70's) and then she said "But you call them book bags now."

And now I no longer call them book bags. Any kind of carry-all tends to be referred to as a "school bag" in my house, whether it's a satchel or backpack or whatever else. You tend to call things whatever your kid calls them and my kid calls them school bags.

Maybe Chelsea called her carrier a "book bag" and the name just stuck?

Even if she did not have a book bag, she certainly had a handbag.

If she misspoke and called a handbag a book bad, who cares?

What concerns me more about her MLK speech, is that it showed once again that she only gets choked up when remembering HER own emotions.

if you look at some of the really hateful things said a couple of nights ago about both Hillary and her supporters.

To think someone actually went searching the net for pictures people carrying book bags then, couldn't find any, and so used that as "fact" that Hillary had dissed the memory of MLK with her lying.
