So, you want to be a McCain Democrat?
AN ALARMING number of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton supporters are telling pollsters they won't support the Democratic ticket if their candidate doesn't win the party's nomination. This, my friends, could mean four more years of Bushist backwardness.

Look before you jump. Democrats thinking of voting for John McCain should ask themselves if they want a hot-tempered, right-wing Republican in the White House - keeping his foot on the gas in Iraq, sentencing women to illegal abortions, and pouring cement around President Bush's tax cuts for the rich.

--

Can't tell Shi'ite from Shinola. Our foreign policy expert, while in Iraq, said over and over that Iran was training Al Qaeda in Iraq. No such thing is happening. Iran, a Shi'ite country, has been training and financing Shi'ite extremists, not Al Qaeda, who are Sunni insurgents. No wonder McCain says we'll have to be in Iraq for 100 years. He doesn't know who's fighting whom.

--

The Supremes. The day the next president takes office, five of the nine Supreme Court justices will be over 70. John Paul Stevens will be 88; Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75; Anthony Kennedy, 71; Stephen Breyer, 70; and, I smile as I write this, Antonin Scalia is 72.

5. Of course I will vote for Obama in the GE.
For me, the Supreme Court is the most important issue. The reason I'm skeptical of Obama is that I think he has a lower chance of winning the EC math with or without my vote. Not because I think he is a bad candidate.

22. That's perfectly reasonable
There's a difference between arguing that Hillary is more electable and saying that you won't vote for Obama. IMO I think there are reasonable arguments for the strengths and weaknesses of both of them. I also think that anyone who says that either one of them can't beat McCain is an idiot.

the EC math as touted by the Clinton campaign has Obama LOSING NY and CA(because she won the primaries there).

That's not going to happen...

It's pretty simple. I'll even vote for Hillary if she's the nominee - even if I have to get blacked-out drunk to do it. I'm just glad it doesn't look like I have to make that decision.

20. Blame the DLC
Back in the 80s they decided to give up large blocks of the middle and mountain west states to the Repubs. They thought they'd SuperTuesday their way to the WH with their southern strategy, and in the process they completely ignored millions of voters.

Obama's campaign is riding on Dean's 50 state strategy, and it's working.

21. Its not just the vote that counts
Democrats need to keep up the same level of enthusiasm and support for our Democratic nominee that they have expressed for their individual candidates thus far. I've seen statements like "I won't vote for McCain, but I won't support (back, vote for , etc.)__________."

This is the same thing as tacitly supporting McCain!

The Democratic nominee needs your full support, enthusiasm, volunteer effort, contributions, etc.

23. After our candidate is picked and set in stone
We're all going to be working hard to repair the damage and try to build a unified platform.

I hope we more or less succeed. A McCain win would be devastating in a whole lot of truly horrible ways. We really will need to focus on who the real enemy is. Even an imperfect candidate (and they're both very, very imperfect) will be far better for this entire nation than McCain.

28. There's too many "Democrats" who've bought into the "McCain is a moderate" myth
These "Democrats" are also too easily swayed by his "war hero" status. The sad thing is, Democrats easily win on the issues in this election, but there's too many so-called "Democrats" who think they know all they need to know about McCain, and that he's a "moderate" and a "war hero", and will vote for him without investigating him and realizing what he truly is: another Bush term.

35. What I find most interesting
is that everyone here seems to think theres going to be a fair election come November. Like 2000 and 2004 never happened. What makes anyone here think that any of the dem candidates have a real chance after the last 2 GE's?? at this point I dont care who your for or who you'll vote for in GE...Mccain has the media behind him, Rove's dirty tricks and corporate money. What makes anyone think the republicans will not steal yet another election? Why would they suddenly start playing nice after so much success playing dirty?

Y'all and can bicker and fight all you want about Obama and Clinton...in the end my money says Mccain is president come January 2009. There are just enough dumb ass Americans who will be happy to put another republican in office despite the horrors of the last 7+ years that it will be close enough for the usual republican tactics to work just fine.

39. Everyone needs to take a deep breath
All this talk about who won't vote for whom or who will vote for McCain is just nonsense. All you have to do is think rationally (I know that's asking a lot in the current climate) for a few minutes.

Most of Hillary's supporters are solid Dems and perhaps some independents, mostly women, who want to see a woman president -- or who think Hillary deserves it. That said, they probably mostly fall to the left side of the political spectrum.

Obama has many supporters who are solid Dems, but many who are independents and previously disaffected voters or non-voters, who are attracted because he offers something other than the same old same old that has turned them off.

In Hillary's case, the solid Dems aren't going to vote for McCrazy no matter what and no matter what they say. The independents are a toss-up, but McCrazy is not just the next blip on the spectrum. It's a long way from Hillary to McCrazy, and I don't see a lot of people making that journey. "Gosh, I'd really like to see a woman president, but since I can't, I'll vote for a batshit crazy old white guy who's a corporate whore and wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years." That just beggars the imagination. Some Hillary supporters may just get their noses out of joint enough to stay home, but even that's doubtful.

In Obama's case, the solid Dems won't go for McCrazy either. The disaffected voters who entered or re-entered politics because Obama was a fresh face, aren't going to vote for McCain who represents everything that turned them off before. They will probably just stay home, but the point is that this is exactly what they would have done had Obama not entered the race at all. So, it's a wash. I don't see a lot of blacks running to McCain's side either for a lot of reasons.

My guess is that the figures you see in the polls come from idle threats by supporters on both sides who are just playing a game of electoral chicken, making tough talk they could never make good on.

My neighbor lady -- an older, white woman, solid Dem -- supports Hillary and has nothing at all good to say about Obama. She asked me the other day how anyone could support "a phony who just crawled out of some black hole somewhere." However, I know there is no way in hell she would vote for McCain -- and I'm pretty sure she would vote for Obama, no matter what she says now.

I think we need to stop wasting time worrying about these predictions of what survey respondents will be doing seven months from now.

45. "McCain Democrat." Ouch. And, while we're at it, let's talk about that stupid "Reagan Dem" thing.
By definition, a "Reagan Democrat" would have last voted for a Democratic President in 1976.

1976!!!! So, the youngest possible Reagan Democrat would now be fifty years old, but yet, that term is used to describe essentially EVERY working class American who votes Republican in a presidential election.

Why don't we just stop calling them "Reagan Democrats" and start calling them "Republicans"?
