Tweety: "This gets very ethnic, but the fact that he's good at basketball doesn't surprise anybody"
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 08:16 PM by RamboLiberal
Summary: On Hardball, discussing Sen. Barack Obama's bowling performance at a campaign stop, Chris Matthews said to MSNBC political analyst Michelle Bernard, "You know, Michelle -- and this gets very ethnic, but the fact that he's good at basketball doesn't surprise anybody, but the fact that he's that terrible at bowling does make you wonder." While showing the video of Obama's bowling, Matthews asserted, "It isn't the most macho form there."

On the March 31 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, discussing Sen. Barack Obama's bowling performance at a March 29 campaign stop at Pleasant Valley Lanes in Altoona, Pennsylvania, MSNBC political analyst Howard Fineman asserted, "If you can't do something like that, you shouldn't do it. He should have stuck to shooting hoops -- which he's very, very good at, by the way, and which translates racially, too, especially during the NCAA basketball tournament. Don't do something you've never tried before in front of a national television audience, OK?" Addressing MSNBC political analyst Michelle Bernard, host Chris Matthews responded, "You know, Michelle -- and this gets very ethnic, but the fact that he's good at basketball doesn't surprise anybody, but the fact that he's that terrible at bowling does make you wonder." While showing the video of Obama's bowling, Matthews asserted, "It isn't the most macho form there."

Media Matters for America documented that on the March 31 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist repeatedly mocked Obama's bowling performance -- which Scarborough called "dainty."

Earlier on Hardball, Matthews asked Obama supporter Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA) about Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor, by asserting, "Let me ask you about this Jeremiah Wright story. You go to a church. I assume it's a black church. That's my jump to assumption there." He added, "Is this preacher problem a real problem? I've looked at it. It doesn't seem to bother black voters. It seems to bother some white voters. What is that story about? How do you see that story as a political problem for Barack Obama?"

8. Andre Watts has an almost flawless command of Brahms, but not because
he's Afro-American.

Tweety has turned himself into a cartoon over the past several years. If we have Bill Moyers and Jim Lehrer on PBS, we do a lot better than the commercial cable twist-and-shout from MSNBC etc.

I admire him for doing something he isn't comfortable with in front of so many people... but a 37 is something I would expect my 5-year-old niece to get. Not that I'm a great bowler... I'm happy if I break 100. :)

he's like one of those guys who tries to not be over offensive and ends up just making an ass out of himself.

"like err, blacks, err...black americans, or err I meant afro..uhh, african americans."

he'd be less embarrassing if he'd just called him a "brotha" like he was zoolander or something.

25. It is hard for me to have too much sympathy here
after all the times that obvious sexism on the part of Tweety and his cohorts were so cavalierly dismissed. For the record this is clearly racist. Just as racist as much as so many of his comments were sexist. I just think we should have equal outrage.

27. Scarborough nailed the proper word
Dainty does describe Obama's bowling form. It's the same term I used in the 37 thread.

I've never seen an adult of either gender bowl 37, or remotely close to that low. That's the only significance. It should be virtually impossible, with any type of coordination.

29. For the record... he only bowled 7 frames......and the 7th was a spare.....
...He had 37 after 6 frames, got a spare in the 7th... and then quit.

So at a minimum... he would've had 47.... and was on pace for about a 70.

:-)

Not much better than a 37, though..... heh

And I doubt he was taking the whole thing very seriously!. And it was only meant as a side trip to a small PA city who had been bemoaning that no presidential candidate had visited them since Truman and I think it was Adalai Stevenson.

39. Bowling is as much about socializing as it is about skill.
Plenty of people bowl...plenty of people suck...and yet enjoy themselves in the process.

These talking heads are schmucks. A night of bowling for the average guy is like playing some mini-golf.

If this had been mini-golf (and he had a rough outing) instead of bowling, would they compare his putt-putt skills to golfers with no handicap?

Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 10:02 PM by Levgreee
just like cricket is popular among Indians, and they'd be better on average. Not exactly racist, in my mind. It is an ethnic/cultural thing.

It is also a fact that a smaller proportion of black people are able to swim. It is more traditional among white families to give lessons and teach kids... although, the geographies of both races plays a role also, since children in urban areas have less access to water.
