90. God(s) had nothing to do with it.
Thank Hillary and thank Barack. Their polar opposite responses to crises in their campaigns is the likely cause. Barack responds to the Rev. Wright controversy with a historical, statesman-like speech. And Hillary responds to her self-created snipergate flap with denials, hems and haws, blames sleep deprivation, and then petulantly brings back up Rev. Wright.

24. I believe this, because for the first time, I know people who were for Hillary
who are switching to Obama. One of them is my MIL, who was a huge Clinton fan, and even spoke in favor of her at a Colorado caucus. She's already voted, but she told her daughter that she now hopes Obama gets nominated.

(Yeah, yeah, I know it's one of those "My barber's sister's second husband says this..." types of comments. What can I say? It's interesting when you see evidence of these trends in your real life.)

35. Pro-Obama trend, not anti-Hillary
What's going on is that Obama's continued to be impressive, and Democrats are growing concerned
that it's time to wrap this up. It doesn't have to be anti-Hillary. What we want and need at the end of the
campaign is for Obama supporters to like Hillary and Hillary's supporters to like Obama. In other words, one
of the candidate's supporters are going to have to be good losers in the primary in order to be winners in the general.
Eyes on the prize.

40. I agree & disagree with that assessment....
I really do believe that this is evidence of a rejection of Hillary's tactics & tall tales. When confronted with her own fabrications, she didn't step up & take full responsibility for that. Instead, she chose to blame her tall tales on sleep deprivation(?), and reinstigate a topic that Obama had addressed quite effectively, and a topic which she had initially refused to comment on, until she was in trouble.

While I agree that at some point we're going to have to unite, I think the party is rejecting the divisive kitchen sink strategy, hence the latest endorsements of Sen. Obama. I think Richardson helped immensely, as will Leahy & Casey. JMHO.

People saw how he survived Wright-gate and came back beautifully, which tells them that he knows how to win the general. And The Speech wowed a lot of the higher-ups in the party, adding confidence.

Then he gave a great economic speech yesterday, showing he can address issues and stay above the fray.

I'm sure the leadership is impatient to get him settled as the nominee so he can go full bore on McCain.

58. I'd like to see the polling
On states that are about to vote. National polling is irrelevant as we are not having a national primary, we are having a state by state election. Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Indiana, West Virginia, etc.

Goes without saying Clinton has West Virginia and is favored in Pennsylvania, Obama is favored in North Carolina, though I think she can pull off the upset (it elects more women to statewide office than Southern states usually do, especially when compared to fellow border state Tennessee) and Indiana I really can't call.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3245853&mesg_id=3246165

A rehash of everything here. But, I would like to point out, if you count Florida (which unlike Michigan, was a real election and went as you expected it to go demographically), Hillary is down in the popular vote in primaries by about 400k (I can't give an exact number) out of 26 million cast. Take out Florida, thats in the half million range.

So, basically, even removing FL and MI, the primaries are neck and neck and popular vote. Clinton has an overall EV lead, that increases when discounting caucuses.

I think it does need to be rationally looked at, the issue of why Obama has a 2/3's lead in caucuses and runs even in primaries. Why is it that there is a disconnect. It's fundamentally because of the nature of what a caucus is, and my argument is in what I linked here.

62. Right now she's down 15-21 points in NC polling
And take out Florida and she is down 700,000 votes, and I'm not sure that includes the caucuses or not. These primaries are not neck and neck. It doesnt matter about Electoral Votes, its the pledged delegates that matter, and Obama is up a near insurmountable 150-160 pledged delegates.

Edited on Fri Mar-28-08 02:34 PM by terrell9584
The kick in Obama's lead comes from the fact that he organized these caucuses in which many ordinary people were shut out of, either because of work, family issues, etc etc.

Let's just say that I stand by the point in what I linked, if Alabama ever tried to institute a caucus process it would never be allowed to stand because the Justice Department would say that there was too great a risk of voter disenfranchisement.

If Hillary actually has a lead in the votes in primary contests, which is entirely possible, even if it is not a delegate lead, if there is an actual on paper vote lead in primaries, then it will have to be settled at the convention, because by default, that will mean that Obama's delegate lead came from elections that could in theory, appear as less democratic than the ones which Hillary does better in, it's a legitimate argument.

As I said before, I probably would have been unable to vote in a caucus, but I was able to go downtown, get an absentee and fill it out that day. And I will also say that I voted for Kerry in 2004 but my precinct went for Bush 2 to 1. If the private ballot had not been available to me, there's a real question of whether I would have showed up, it's just the truth. I have never been comfortable with publically advertising my political choices when they are the unpopular one (and it splits about 50/50), and you may call it cowardice but I personally call it keeping the peace. And I think there are many people who would have voted in a primary that wouldn't in a caucus because they just don't want to make their vote public.

68. No, the way you decide this thing is by pledged delegates, not by popular vote
You cannot just remove caucuses because that disenfranchises those states. You can change the rules in later years, but you cannot just remove states like Washington, Wyoming, Iowa, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, etc.

If this is one of your deciding factors, then there's nothing outside of the rules, no rule changing, or any of that foldera. It is how the process works.

72. The caucus debate
This is like a baseball team arguing that "We had more singles, doubles, triples, stolen bases... if it weren't for those pesky home runs, the other team would never stand a chance. Therefore, the homering is unfair. We should remove the homering for now on. None allowed." (until our team actually starts hitting lots of home runs, and then we'll re-investigate again).

77. Your analogy doesn't hold.
Home runs are the whole point of baseball. Votes are the point of winning elections. Caucuses disenfranchise a lot of voters (see the Texas Primary/Caucus which showed a disproportionate amount of people voting for Obama in the caucus). The argument will be discussed, but I'm beginning to think the status quo wants Obama because he makes a good puppet.

85. no
Home runs are not "the whole point of baseball". Do you even know anything about baseball? The team that hits the most home runs doesn't win the game based on that statistic.

Both camps are picking and choosing what statistics they'd like to highlight, and which statistics they'd like to distance themselves from. Do you really think that the Hillary campaign would be complaining about caucases if she was winning all of the caucases? Of course not. And if Obama had won California and New York, would the Hillary campaign be discussing all of the rhetoric of the "big states"? Of course not. Her campaign picks and chooses what's "important" based on what they don't excel in.

If Hillary knew she would get crushed in Pennsylvania, do you think that she'd be saying "The road to the white House goes through Pennsylvania Avenue"? Wouldn't that basically be saying "Obama is the president"? She throws out sound bites like that because she knows that she will win that state. Therefore, it's "more important".

However, you do not hear the Obama campaign saying that any state, and group of voters, any process is more or less important then any other. It's the Hillary campaign which picks and chooses based on their persuasion and bias. And they keep doing it over and over and over again because it's the only way to sway an impressionable voter like yourself in their direction.

Edited on Fri Mar-28-08 03:53 PM by TomBall Democrat
I agree that the Democratic Party primary, caucus, and superdelegate rules are seriously flawed.

But, they are the RULES TODAY.

The caucus dates are announced months ahead of time. Lots of folks at mine took off from work to be there. Lots brought their kids, and we helped lots of elderly and disabled. So, I'm not buying this load of Hillshit.

The solution to the rules dilemma is to work to change them. But whining and flip-flopping when you don't like the outcome is just weak and lame assed and what I have come to expect from the junior senator from NY - who needs to remain the junior senator from NY indefinitely.

143. Hillary vs. McCain ...

Here's how the ad will go.

Hillary Clinton CLAIMS experience is important. But what type of experience does she have?

She withheld billing records for years in the White House.
She shepearded a health care plan to failure.
She opposed ending abortion.

In fact her experience was so poor she had to invent war stories just like John Kerry

cue: picture of Hillary Clinton greeting the little girl while Hillary talks about sniper fire.

Oh really.

But theres hope.
John McCain has served in the senate for 24 years. John McCain was an experienced combat pilot that sacrificed for his country. John McCain has experience uniting this country.

John McCain Real, Real experience.

Hillary has handled herself so poorly. She has torpedoed both herself and the Democratic party. Will she please just excuse herself and go BACK to the Senate and STAY THERE.

64. I'm certainly pleased to see this, and I do believe it's a result
of people reacting to several recent issues or incidents arising around or out of the Clinton campaign. My hope is that the damage done can be undone once we move toward unity behind a candidate. I do hope Senator Clinton's words to those who say they'll vote McCain rather than Obama are heeded; I hope Obama supporters who say they'll vote for McCain over Clinton will heed those words as well.
And I do hope that those who are inspired by the thought of UNITY will not just hope for it, but actively work towards it, whether here at DU or elsewhere. If the prospect of unity in our nation is appealing, could we all please start RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW? Can we focus on what is positive about our preferred candidates? Can we tout those attributes in a constructive manner, whether arguing for the Democratic nominee or for the Presidency?

I hope so...like the song says, "Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me."
Let there be peace and unity among Democrats, and let it begin with us.

I'll hop off my soapbox now.

I hope as a progressive voter your consolation prize isn't McCain. What will that do for the progressive community or progressive causes?

A Clinton win was never a guarantee. Remember folks, Democrats Kerry, Dukakis, Mondale, Carter, and Humphrey have lost recent elections (and Gore didn't fight hard enough even when he won).

We may have a charismatic candidate for a change at the top of the ticket that can cut into the electoral map. Even conservatives have said good things about him (David Brooks, Andrew Sullivan, this month's editorial in the American Conservative), despite his 100% liberal voting record according to the National Journal (admittedly a flawed source). Which one of our recent Democratic nominees has been complimented like this by conservatives?

I support progressive values, and I'm excited that a candidate that I personally support may win the nomination. As a supporter of Kucinich, Jerry Brown, Jesse Jackson, and Alan Cranston in primaries past, I understand the disappointment of losing in the nominating process. But the point is to win the presidency - with Obama at the top of the ticket and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas for vice president. And Hillary Clinton on the Supreme Court. That's my dream ticket.

Peace, Clinton supporters - no disrespect, just differences of opinion for the primary season at least.

I'm a registered republican that will be voting for Barack Obama in the general election. Veered off track only once when voting for John F. Kennedy.

John McCain is a great American. I'm a veteran and in his age group -- we old duffers, on occasion, tend to have lapses of memory. After the dust settles OBAMA WILL WIN in the GENERAL ELECTION.

It totally amazes me that after lies upon lies, compounded by lies upon lies, that Hillary could even be within eight percentage points in the polls. Come on people, take off the blinders.

Pennsylvanians take note. Prove to the Clinton's that you are not uneducated, as they would have you believe, and can vote for Obama. Casey and Kerry's wife (Heinz) should help his cause. Make Pennsylvania Hillary's Waterloo.

C'mon fellow grandpas and great-grandpas, and grandmas and great-grandmas out there in Hillary's demographic playground, think of your youngsters. They are the HOPE for the future. For their sake vote HOPE, vote Obama.

Excuse me for intruding upon DU. I have no intention of changing my allegiance from the republican party but again, GO BARACK OBAMA. You, like JFK did, have my vote. You, like JFK, are a once-in-a-generation candidate for the people. For me, twice.

My mother would've approved of this message.

137. That is so sweet....I'm so happy that he's ahead!
maybe now Hillary will think twice about trumping a story to help with her experience.

I'm fine with her lying though, because she obviously underestimates old news footage of her record on things, so the more lies the faster Obama can lock this nomination because WE WILL keep up with her on everything she says and just sit and wait in order to debunk her next tall-tale.

OBAMA 08'!

141. If he wants to nail the lid on HRC's political coffin, pick Edwards as VP (IMHO)
...NOT Bloomberg, as I'm hearing mentioned.

145. In my Dreams!
Also for safety sake. The CIA or FBI won't try to do their dirty deeds, if Edwards is the successor who has the same political outlook.

147. This is good news
Last week, neither side had said or did anything particularly positive - she reached her highest and he reached his lowest.

He is where he was before all of the drama - a return of supporters?
