So, my mom thinks Hillary needs to get out of the race. That's the end folks.
My 84 year old mother, the original feminist (refused to take my dad's name when they married in 1947) was the only Hillary supporter in my extended family. We teased her about it but didn't take her on cause she the last of her generation alive and we let her have her way. To her it was mostly about wanting to see a woman in the white house before she dies.

After Obama's speech she called me to say he'd won her over. I wasn't sure how strongly. This morning she called after the Sunday morning talk shows (as she always does) to ask what I think. I said "Hillary needs to get out of the race." She said "yes, she does. She's doing no good now."

This all democratic family is united once more. (My hubby even sent Obama money, he doesn't usually send money this early but I saw he got a letter from Obama's campaign thanking him for his donation. My husband doesn't like Obama's fiscal policies on banks or something but he's a good dem so will go along.)

12. she was
she tells the story that the mailman wouldn't deliver her mail to the mail box. He left it out on the sidewalk but he'd bring dad's to the mailbox.

When we kids went to school, the school sent counselors to our house because they thought we came from a broken home! Divorce was rare in the 50s and they couldn't figure out why mom and dad had different names. Mom changed to Dad's name then as she didn't want us kids to suffer for her decision.

My favorite story about my mom is when us cousins started smoking pot in the 60s and 70s she got together with her 3 sisters to talk about what to do about it. There was lots of misinformation about how harmful it is and they didn't know how worried to be about us kids. So, in true liberal, open minded fashion, they employed the scientific method. Scored some dope from the husband of one of my older cousins (dirty hippie) and the four of them tried it! And decided it was no big deal. Of course they didn't tell us until a few years ago. There is also a rumor they tried acid but she won't admit to that.

A big part of her personality came from growing up the only atheists in a small town in Utah. You learn early that group think is not necessarily right. She gives every kid she knows when they graduate from high school a framed print of a poster that says "protest against the rising tide of conformity."

I come from good stock.

5. My 94 year old mother-in-law
was born and raised in a town that had sunset laws until civil rights laws made them illegal. She would be the first to think it was time for a woman to be elected president. I have avoided discussing the primary with her even though I know she is die hard Democrat. Today, after Obama's brief appearance in our community, she read me chapter and verse of why he needs to be our next president. I am sure glad I did not have to argue with her. I sometimes lose.

Wants Hillary.

She keeps complaining abt O's involvement with Wright.

So I spend the morning entranced by the Online feed from Trinity Church.

I was inspired, and made joyful, and felt blown away by the pastor (Don't know his name -but he was awesome. Anyone who can weave a sermon out of the story of the two thieves and Tupac has my attention.)

Edited on Sun Mar-23-08 11:29 PM by CLW
Hillary was the one once Edwards was out. The last two weeks have changed her mind. She's another Grandma for Obama.

Edit to add, these elderly folks are surprising many of us!

More wisdom and experience tend to see through facades, once they've been weathered a bit.... weathering on both the facades, and those observing them.

If Obama keeps writing his own work, from his heart, he's strong enough that he could even have given Reagan a run for his money.

I'm pretty sure she would laugh at your mom and tell her to sit down and wait for the votes to be counted.

23. Good for her!
:bounce:

I wish she could give my mom some of her wisdom. Unfortunately, Mom always follows my younger sister, who works in D.C. and naturally (according to Mom) has the inside scoop and KNOWS who should be president (the Republican, of course). My older sister and her husband follow the same logic. All of them voted for W twice. I'm sure they'll vote for McCain this time. I've tried to talk with them, but they tell me I get "too serious" about politics. It's no fun being the only Democrat in a Republican family. :banghead:
