Foreign press remarks on McCain's elderly, frail appearance ... link
I've noticed that, with my elderly parents, you tend to notice progressions in their aging all at once- like they have aging spurts or something. My impression is that McCain had one such spurt in the last couple of months. I'm of course not blaming him for this- he's 71 years old and has lived a hard life, much of the hardship resulting from service in wartime.

But these quotes from foreign media strengthen my impression in this regard and make me think that McCain may be easier for Obama to beat than many think. McCain has had a few verbal gaffes lately, and his advisers don't seem as eager to put him on the Sunday morning talk shows as they used to. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, maybe not, but it could be a big factor in the election.

Some reporters were clearly struck by his age. The Times of London called him an “old dog,” in its headline, and wrote that he “looks older than his 71 years and every bit as tired as he should be, having just dragged his campaign from the grave to achieve an improbable victory over half a dozen younger rivals for the Republican nomination.'’
It goes on to describe its interview: “In his London hotel room, without the thick TV make-up that often masks the cancer scars on his face, he seems pale — utterly exhausted — almost frail.'’
The Jerusalem Post wrote earlier this week about the impressions its reporters had when they sat down with Mr. McCain at the David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem, writing that “McCain, 71, is not a young man, which is by no means a sin, a fault, nor something that should disqualify him from serving as president of the United States.'’
“It is just that in his presence you feel his age, you sense it. You feel it in the way he looks, especially around the neck, and in the way you can actually see him think, see him thinking. His answers are not of the rapid-fire variety; they are slower, more methodical.'’

1. Yes, but he can't be frail and tired AND a smoldering volcano...
...we have to decide which fits him better.

2. His time to run was in '96..and he could have beaten Clinton
but it was "Bob Dole's "turn".

he missed his one chance and this one's not gonna be it either..

there's always ONE optimum time to run,,and when it's gone..it's gone for good..

7. I agree.
His time has passed.

I do not think he has reached a turning point in the aging process -- yet.

My parents are 79 and 82. My father has definitely reached that point. He had an illness recently that sent him into the early stages of dementia. My mother is still mentally and physically fit.

As far as McCain is concerned, he could be mentally fit for another ten years before he begins to decline. However, he is in remission from cancer, and he bears lasting damage from his time as a POW. The rigors of a campaign and the Presidency would send him into an earlier decline. I don't think this is a matter of conjecture. The Presidency ages everyone. Seventy or seventy-one is not old by today's standards, but it is too old to seek the most powerful and high pressure job in the world.

6. If he continues to burn is it too late for the pugs to switch horses at
their convention? Or do they know that the economic future is likely to keep them from winning so they are just sacrificing him?

8. If he folded before November
I wouldn't be surprised. The film I saw from Jordan and London was shocking. The man looked dazed and confused; doddering. I think we may yet end up running against Mitt Romney.

9. Anyone who'd even think of voting for McCain should consider how hard on the body the Presidency is
I have my doubts whether he can survive it and keep his mind in good working order. He seems to be having enough trouble with health just while campaigning.

Given that his VP is likely to be less of a maverick, it is something any people thinking of crossing over should seriously consider.
