Polls show Barack Obama damaged by link to Reverend Jeremiah Wright

The Times
March 21, 2008

Barack Obama has been significantly damaged by the controversy over his pastor’s inflammatory remarks and the issue has become a serious threat to his presidential ambitions, polls suggest.

The surveys released yesterday point to an erosion of Mr Obama’s support among independents, a bloc that has previously backed him in overwhelming numbers, and particular alienation among white, working-class voters who will be critical to the general election in November.

They appear disturbed by the Illinois senator’s refusal to disown the Rev Jeremiah Wright in a keynote speech he delivered on Tuesday — an address that he was forced to give to try to defuse the outrage caused by the emergence of his former pastor’s videotaped, incendiary sermons.

A new national Gallup tracking poll shows Hillary Clinton regaining her lead over Mr Obama for the first time in a month, now leading 49 per cent to 42, a 13-point shift to the former First Lady in less than a fortnight.

Mrs Clinton also holds a 16-point lead over Mr Obama in Pennsylvania, their next contest on April 22. In addition, Mr Obama has lost his once-commanding lead among independent voters to John McCain, the Republican nominee, in a new CBS poll. The survey shows Mr McCain with leads over both Democrats, a sign of how their protracted battle threatens to damage the eventual nominee.

Did you see that comment on the bottom from someone in South America? The world is paying attention to this Obama scandal. And Obama with his forked tongue shows off to the world he is just a rookie from old-school-Chicago on the world's stage - - not hardly fit to be the leader of the free world.

10. CBS POLL -- 71 % SAY OBAMA HANDLED WRIGHT EXPLANTION PROPERLY
(CBS) Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race this week, in which he discussed his relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his controversial longtime minister, has received largely positive reviews, according to a new CBS News poll.

"Seventy-one percent say he did a good job explaining his relationship with Wright.'

Sixty-nine percent of voters who have heard or read about Obama’s speech say he did a good job addressing the issue of race relations, and 63 percent of voters following the events say they agree with Obama's views on race relations.

20. Handling the explanation properly does not mean he'll get their vote
Obama needs to restore his transcendent character. The follow up, rehabilitating Wright, will not help. Obama may be spared the damage, but his campaign may yet be irreparably damaged. They knew the risk ... which is why it's their judgment, not Barry's bigotry, that's the issue.

of Hillary supporters trying to throw rotten tomatoes at those involved who WOULD take this opportunity to HAVE the discussion necessary that can move this country forward?

Instead we have Hillary camp fanning the flames against Obama in hopes that he falls - and there are many racists who would indeed take that shot to fell the first black nominee for president.

Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 02:16 PM by blm
are the ones furthering the damage - because those Dems WANT Obama to fall and don't care how it happens.

Hillary's known the math is against her for a month now - the cynic in me is pretty certain the Clintons expect something drastic to happen to Obama and that it wouldn't be farfetched for that drastic event to be an assassination attempt of the first black nominee for president.

THAT is why they throw gas on the fire at every turn and why negative posts about Wright are put up diligently by the hardcore Clinton supporters.

That's exactly what his speech was all about - - attempting to distort the hate being preached from the pulpit, twisting it into being the fault of the fears of your 'typical white person'.

Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 02:53 PM by Maribelle
that I live in and how she has provided so much for my people.

I do not think of the government in Washington that attempts to run her.

I do not think of the partisan politics that attempt to scar her face.

I do not think of the injustices that men have brought upon her bosom.

I do not think of the pollution, the depleted resources, the poverty.

I think of her, and I ask God to continue to bless this beautiful land.

God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

When I hear a preacher scream from the pulpit 'God damn America' I see tears in her eyes.

Perhaps some preachers and their congregations need to come to an understanding of their own ignorance.

and enabling the fascists who do not want citizens to access an open government they have been given as a right of that citizenship.

It is a citizens DUTY to be informed and to access its government's record of actions performed IN OUR NAME.

But some of you want to elevate songs over the constitution and pretend that is enough duty to perform.

As IF that will keep the fascists at bay. That is what the fascists DEPEND ON - uniformed citizens attached more to song than they are to their rights, especially their right to open government that is accountable to the PEOPLE.

45. Why in Hell should we be having a discussion on race today
when depression is looking us in the face and our troop deaths will soon reach 4000, of all colors, not even looking at all of our wonderful soldiers who are injured horribly, mentally and physically. We need to reach out to heal them and make them as whole as we can. This is an effort that is just as important to one race or the others. We also have to attempt to heal Iraq. It is our mess and we have to own it. Even though this hasn't really been discussed among our candidates, we must all agree that without our interference, Iraq would be a functioning country today.

WE NEED TO BE UNITED, NOT DIVIDED. Surely, by now, all can see that Obama is a divider, not a uniter.

I am not saying race relations aren't important, but this is the time to save our country, bring our boys home, and get them and everybody else without, jobs. Slightly more important, don't you think? Last time I looked, we all need bread, donchathink?

Women are always the ones who reason with bickering adults or children. That's what the Hillary haters are so afraid of. Gosh, she might actually begin a dialogue to bring people together of all races. She is the one, not Obama.

48. We shouldn't have that situation at all but we DO thanks to Bill's efforts to protect BushInc
throughout the 90s.

Clinton supporters want BushInc protected into the next decade, apparently, since you KNOW how Bill's coverups helped protect the first Bush regime from accountability.

http://consortiumnews.com/2006/111106.html

But, when does a Clinton supporter ever show they CARE about truth?

The only thing that will STOP the world chaos is Open Government that starts with the UNITED STATES.

You supporters of Bushes, Clintons, and Closed Government have caused every bad thing that has happened in the world but you don't even realize it.

say a darn thing. The whole thing was blown out of proportion by the media. The pundits and journalists we see daily pushed it and pushed it in order to listen to themselves. Where does the Times UK get this information? Leaky pundits? This takes up time that the candidate could put to better use letting us know how he or she will govern. He should not have to apologize for what someone else said. He is running for president, not Mr. Wright.
