POLITICO: Story Behind the Story: The Clinton Myth (HRC HAS NO CHANCE TO WIN)
Story behind the story: The Clinton myth
By JIM VANDEHEI & MIKE ALLEN | 3/21/08 1:32 PM EST

One big fact has largely been lost in the recent coverage of the Democratic presidential race: Hillary Rodham Clinton has virtually no chance of winning.

Her own campaign acknowledges there is no way that she will finish ahead in pledged delegates. That means the only way she wins is if Democratic superdelegates are ready to risk a backlash of historic proportions from the party’s most reliable constituency.

Unless Clinton is able to at least win the primary popular vote — which also would take nothing less than an electoral miracle — and use that achievement to pressure superdelegates, she has only one scenario for victory. An African-American opponent and his backers would be told that, even though he won the contest with voters, the prize is going to someone else.

People who think that scenario is even remotely likely are living on another planet.

1. There is no such thing as a "popular vote" in a Primary that includes caucuses

13. Thank you for pointing out this obvious fact
that is being totally ignored everywhere. Using a popular vote test is mixing apples and oranges when there are both primaries and caucuses. The MSM is expressing its ignorance of facts whenever they bring up the popular vote meme. But then again ... that's no big surprise!

27. My understanding is that she's behind about 700,000 primary votes if you exclude caucuses
I'd say that's pretty damn relevant.

8. Why is the party allowing this to possibly hurt our (DEM) nominee w attacks while draining our
coffers which should be used for the general? I can understand (not agree with) the MSM wanting to sell ads but what the heck-let's get behind the nominee and work not only to elect Obama but a large control of congress!

Jonathan Alter pointed this out, and "disappeared"

The media is enjoying high ratings caused by all of the primary chaos, and is unwilling to end it.
They perpetuate the myth for their own benefit and to the detriment of the DEMS>

Hillary Should Get Out Now

Clinton has only one shot— for Obama to trip up so badly that he disqualifies himself.

11. Scorch and burn '08...
then a comeback in '12.

Ay yi yi, I sincerely hope that is not the case -- it would be disasterous for her and the party.

21. When has anyone ever used SNL to pressure MSM to do anything?
Think about it. That's Clinton power. Using a fucking skit on a show that hasn't been funny since William Katt put on a superhero suit. So if they can do that, what's to stop them from pressuring the superdelegates to give them the necessary votes to win the nomination regardless of how the pledged delegates or the popular vote ends up? Who will stop them? The voters?

23. So they are working desperately to turn Obama into an unelectable candidate
using as many lies and smears and innuendo as possible in
order to convince the SD's that he is unelectable, this is just
wrong, wrong wrong.
