BUNKO ALERT: I'm an Obama Fan and in I'm Defending Hillary! SHE DID NOT LIE on the Feb. FUNDING!
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 01:13 PM by Dems Will Win
Everybody knows I am not for the Clinton campaign, but I am defending her integrity in this post! She did not lie about $16 million in February!

This mistake by The Field lies in reading the following paragraph INCORRECTLY from the LA Times:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) was second in fundraising. She collected $34.6 million in February, pushing her total to $173.8 million. That includes $10 million from her Senate campaign account and a $5-million personal loan. Clinton owes consultants and other vendors an additional $3.7 million.

HELLO! The $5 mil loan came in January and the $10 mil long before that! The Field is reading the article INCORRECTLY by thinking those numbers and the other smaller ones applied to Feb. When in reality they were referring to the TOTAL:

The Los Angeles Times reports, after scouring Federal Elections Commission (FEC) reports that Clinton’s, uh, creative math, included “$10 million from her Senate campaign account and a $5-million personal loan.”

http://ruralvotes.com/thefield/?p=926

Clinton is not lying about this, that is stupid. She would get caught in an instant.

The usually reliable FIELD has made a terrible error and should retract it.

UPDATE: This is direct from the FEC and debunks the whole story:

Here is the link to the full report:

PLEASE RECOMMEND IF YOU ARE A HILLARY SUPPORTER OR AN OBAMA SUPPORTER

1. The loans were reported earlier
I found the info on the ten million transfer from her Senate campaign when I researched in Jan, so it had already been reported. The Field read this wrong, and worse, didn't do his own research. I know it's hard, but you should never report something inflammatory unless you have checked original source documents yourself.

2. That's why I made a post on this. The Field blew it
Someone needs to go over there and post and tell them to pull the post now.

Fair is fair.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 12:51 PM by Dems Will Win
Apologies to the Hillary supporters on DU.

I'm Dems Will Win, if the Hillary and Obama supporters could PLEASE stop recommending the threads about the $16 billion lie and link them over here. And keep kicking this!

I have to go to work.

Obama supporters made a mistake repeating the Field post and we need a rapid response here!

25. Yes and no...
Yes, the loan was reported earlier, but no, it was specifically not included in January's fundraising total. So if you subtract January's totals from February's you see that they are including it in February's fundraising #s.

28. Both the $5 and $10??
I am relatively certain that I found info on the $10 million Senate transfer in her FEC records. I'll check this more thoroughly later tonight.

Look again.

They announced the loan in January, I remember.

11. Good work
I want to re-iterate the point that it is very irresponsible for someone to put up a post which can (and is probably meant to) harm one of the democratic candidates without checking on original sources.

It is equally irresponsible to swallow those posts whole and recommend them without ascertaining whether they are true or not.

Despite your pleas, it will continue.

There was a post yesterday that was a total fabrication and rose to the very top of the page. Despite it repeatedly being debunked in the thread, people just kept reading the inflammatory headline and recommending it.

Sad, really.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 01:15 PM by autorank
Who cares about her money. How about her co-presidency - and the human imipact?

How about the number of dead civilians due to "Sanctions" 1989-2000?

500,000 increase in infant mortality in the 90's.
http://www.casi.org.uk/

http://www.fff.org/freedom/fd0402c.asp
"Denis Halliday, the UN administrator of the oil-for-food program, resigned in 1998 to protest the ravages the sanctions were continuing to inflict on Iraqis. Halliday complained, “We are in the process of destroying an entire country” and denounced the sanctions as “nothing less than genocide.” Hans von Sponeck, his replacement, served two years before resigning in protest in early 2000, denouncing the sanctions as a “criminal policy.”

International Red Cross:
http://tinyurl.com/36wcdx

I. Nine years of sanctions 1989-1999 (7 years under"the Clintons")

"the situation of the civilian population is increasingly desperate. Deteriorating living conditions, inflation, and low salaries make people's everyday lives a continuing struggle, while food shortages and the lack of medicines and clean drinking water threaten their very survival.

..."the year's other war", United States and British aircraft have continued to bomb targets in the north and south of the country nearly every day since the four-day "Desert Fox" operation in December 1998, which followed Iraq's expulsion of United Nations weapons inspectors."

Effect on the Iraqi Population

As in war, it is civilians who are the prime victims of sanctions. Salaries are as low as US$2 a month; there is around 50% unemployment. People have had to sell their belongings in order to survive -- first their cars, then household appliances, even their books and furniture.

In the past

Just a decade ago, Iraq boasted one of the most modern infrastructures and highest standards of living in the Middle East. ...

No wonder, then, that Iraq's infrastructure should have proved so vulnerable to the effects of comprehensive trade sanctions, and with such devastating effect on the lives of civilians. The population, in particular doctors, technicians, and teachers, are now exposed to third-world problems which they had never been prepared to deal with.

"No future"

Even if sanctions were lifted tomorrow, it would take years for the country to return to the same standards as before the Gulf war. Prospects for a better future are bleak, and an increasing number of Iraqis, especially the highly qualified, are trying to leave the country, or have already done so. This brain drain exacerbates the situation for those staying behind, as it leads to a loss of skills which are then not be passed on to the next generation.

It also reinforces what I think is the real motive for continuing the doomed campaign - rebuilding her warchest.

22. FEC shows a lot. Less than half the money raised is for the primary, and the debt doesn't
include the $5 million loan. Hillary definitely has a cash problem.

Now we need to see those tax returns.

26. The primary-GE part may be fair
And I don't think the loan was paid back yet. But the $10 million Senate money was reported before the $5 million because I found it when I was researching it back in January. It's not part of the Feb money so that is wrong to say that. The article was misinterpreted. How much of the Feb money is GE money would be interesting to know though, and what happens to that money when she drops out. I gotta go soon, won't be able to look this up until late tonight.

33. 10 Mill
C&P

A closer look at the political activity of those Hsu donors suggests their contributions to Clinton's presidential campaign did not mark their first donations to the senator from New York. Hsu's donors gave $256,945 to Clinton's senate campaign since 2005, and $40,000 to her political action committee, "Hill Pac" during that period.

Some of that money may have eventually found its way into Clinton's presidential accounts, because she transfered about $10 million from her senate fund into her presidential coffers.

Asked if the campaign was considering returning any of that additional money, campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said the campaign was not. "We didn't keep track of the contributions in the same way so we do not know which contributions to credit to Mr. Hsu," Wolfson said.
