Could Richardson turn NM blue if he is the VP?
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 11:52 AM by NJSecularist
He may be the best choice for VP solely for that reason.

1. Pluses: Drives out hispanic vote, can win NM, adds FP creds
Minuses: the combo of a black and hispanic may be too "ethnic," he lied about being drafted by MLB

14. Most people don't know he's Hispanic because of his names.
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 12:05 PM by CottonBear
I didn't know for years that he was Hispanic. I just knew he was a high-ranking US official during the Clinton administration. I'm from Georgia and I was not familiar with New Mexico politics.

15. "Offered a contract" vs "Drafted" is a mistake, not a lie.

Also, as I recall the agent said he may have actually worded it as "drafted" instead of "offered a contract" when he called Richardson. Juxtaposing the two concepts is no biggie ... until someone decides to make political spin out of it.

Sort of like when my friends asked me if I had sex with a certain gal and I responded, "no, she gave me a blowjob, but we didn't have sex". Not one person argued, "but a blowjob *is* sex". Everyone understood what I meant. But I'm not a politician with enemies trying to spin my every utterance.

FYI: "drives out" sounds more like "drives away" than "gets out" or "brings out".

:)

20. Another pro is that he was a Manager when he was Gov. as opposed to a senator.

8. I would love the idea of a Bill Richardson VP (after much thought)..
At first mention of this I didn't like it much because of the close ties that Richardson has had with the Clinton's, but I think it would be awesome now.

11. Richardson carried the Governorship with nearly 70%
of the vote!!

He would trivially trivially trivially carry NM - he would probably also put Texas into more serious play than it has been in years.

Viva Richardson!!!

12. And Colorado, Arizona,
Nevada, Montana... California is gonna be blue anyway. Washington and Oregon will more likely be blue with Richardson. Wyoming? Nah. Utah, nah. Idaho, hmmm, doubt it. North and South Dakota, definite maybes.

Colorado probably would have gone blue anyway, but not 100% sure. Western states could be the key and Richardson will definitely bring some along. He's well versed in the issues that are important to us like water, protecting our parks and environment since tourism is HUGE here, green jobs... The list is endless.

13. NM only has 5 electoral votes.
That doesn't seem like a big haul. Also, it's a purple state (narrowly for Gore in 2000, narrowly for Bush in 2004) -- we should be able to win this year regardless of who's on the ticket.

19. California the biggest prize would be a shoe in
Florida's voting machines are still screwed up.

IF Florida wants change they will do the right thing.

17. NM went blue in 2000 and 2004. There was massive election fraud in 2004 that
went uninvestigated because the machines were erased quickly.

21. He could have last time had he insured that the vote was clean on
certain Indian reservations. There were some that registered NO Kerry votes. The reason was not that they wanted to hurt Kerry, but to lower the weight that that congressional district would have in the primaries.
