Were Super-Delegates created to keep any Anti-Establishment nominee OUT?
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 04:27 PM by atal
I read somewhere that Super-Delegates were created after Carter won the nomination on an anti-establishment ticket....

I've asked this before and never got an answer, are the majority of Super-Delegates pro-Washington? Is that why Clinton has placed all her confidence in them overturning Omaba's momentum and giving her the nomination..?

1. The SUperD's are ther to prevent "fringe" or "radical" candidates out.
Both of the remaining candidates are mainstream Democrats, when it comes to votes and policy. That isn't the issue this time.

The role they are playing, now, is almost like a "Party Leaders' Primary". They will be the final say, and they can chose either for any reason, same as you and I.

2. of course they were
the whole idea is that the people who make up the day to day working backbone of the party have a greater say in the nominee, since theoretically, at least, they have the beat interests of the party in mind (if you define the party as those people elected on the ticket)

3. The Superdelegates were created specifically
to overrule repukes crossing over to vote in the open primary states in large enough numbers to secure the Democratic nomination for the weakest Dem candidate!

20. Excuse you, but I posted an opinion, not garbage.
Opinions don't need back up! Didn't anyone teach you that in school?

If you want to debate my opinion, that's one thing. But if you want to dispute my opinion, then YOU should provide a link or STFU. Bye now.

23. An opinion?
You posted a direct response to a question - you didn't write 'Oh, I think this....or maybe it's that...'. Not an opinion, a direct response (and a wrong one).

You don't know what you're talking about - you know nothing about the DNC's Hunt Commission - nothing about what happened with regard to the 1972 nomination process - nothing about elected officials running for delegate positions. You're clueless.

And you tell me to STFU?

27. I put a good historical link in post 25
I don't understand what you mean by pro-Washington. Do you mean pro-establishment? Anti-change? I think your elected officials who are Super Delegates are more pro-keeing their seats and the non-electeds (party chairs/DNC members/addons) are probably more open to change.

6. I Remember...
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 04:52 PM by rcsl1998
...after a few primary cycles where the voters didn't elect the choice of the powers that be (at least in some states) & they didn't get to go to the convention (because other slates of delegates were elected), it was a mass WAAA! crybaby-fest - Super-Delegate slots were created so they could go to the convention without having to actually win a delegate position via the people's vote...

Just like the electoral college our leaders don't believe the people are smart enough to make decisions for themselves so just in case they want a safe guard against the tyranny of the majority.

10. Uh... Yeah...
With a wink and a nod to the "good old days" when the party bosses would sit down in the back room of the convention hall light up a few big stogies, make jokes about the sheeple out front, and cut the deals. Oh but its hard to give up power when you have it - just ask the Clintons.

11. According to wiki, they blamed McGovern on the voters, and so put in superdelegates....
... to try to make sure that "debacle" didn't happen again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superdelegate#History

I wasn't there - I don't know how much truth there is to that.

13. Yes. Read "Irony of Democracy."
This country was created by the Elites and it was organized so that the Elites would always be in power. That's why we have the delegate system...the parties pick their most faithful knowing that, if they had to, they could get the delegates to vote for who the Elites want and not who We the Peeps voted for. Superdelegates just put an exponent on it.

Again, read "Irony of Democracy."

14. no - their job is to decide who best could compete in the GE
if things are still close by the time the convention rolls around. I imagine they'll take a close look at who's doing best in the swing states....
