Huffington leads charge for female vote
'Single women will hold the key' to outcome of presidential election

If the sight of 1 million women hitting the streets of Washington last week in one of the largest protests ever -- the "March for Women's Lives'' -- dramatized anything, it was this: Those NASCAR dads may have to share the stage as 2004's primo voter.

Author, commentator and former gubernatorial candidate Arianna Huffington says that's one reason Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry better get to work. And fast.

"Single women will hold the key,'' said Huffington, noting that "22 million single women who were eligible to vote did not cast ballots in 2000 --
and 16 million of those weren't even registered.''

Huffington is one of a growing number of women activists who plan to do something about it: she's joining with MoveOn.org co-founder Joan Blades, Democratic activist Susie Tompkins Buell, and a host of others for an unusual San Francisco event aimed specifically at the single and female slice of the electorate.

I wonder why single women are not voting? Why aren't they even registering to vote?
