Obama's speech today was a whiney, 'why are they picking on me' snorer. He refuses to denounce the execrable Wright and the Repubs are gonna staple them together in the election. Very disappointing.

49. I'm really torn about it...
One the one hand, I don't want to "stifle" my own debate by cutting people off (because even a stopped watch is right twice a day), but at the same time, these comments are both indefensible and downright tiresome. Maybe I'll have a "general amnesty" after the primaries, but for now, I think the list is going to keep growing.

7. Can anyone even think of another speech on race at this point? Malcolm X maybe?
Thats about it, so that statement is an easy one to make.

I pretty much discount any judgement msnbc has on obama at this point.

This does not take away from the speech, it was very good. But statements like that infer that they are comparable, and I am sorry, but they are not.

83. ANYONE w'out his head up his ass can think of plenty of race speeches. your point is useless.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 07:25 PM by mythyc
James Baldwin's "A Talk to Teachers" (first delivered then published as an essay)
Bobby Kennedy's "Mindless Menace of Violence" ok, you're immediate reply is that it's not about race, so
- - - - here's the change-up to follow that fastball:
Bobby Kennedy's "Remarks on the Assassination of MLK"
Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March "Two Americas Speech" (9 years before John Edwards stole this
- - - - line (NB: before you freak out about Farrakhan, I'm not condoning his platform: you just asked
- - - - for other speeches on race)
Abraham Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation"
Henry David Thoreau "Slavery in Massachusetts"
Frederick Douglass "What the Black Man Wants"

All these figures had many more. I could go on. I think I made my point. Now tell me: what point were you trying to make? uhhhh, well, I can't *remember* any other speeches, so this one isn't the best since "I have a dream." don't say "we", i.e. America can't remember these speeches. You say that and I say you're deceiving yourself with no purpose, with an anti-purpose.

We grew up hearing them. one or two may slip from memory hear and there, but they are JUST AS ESSENTIAL to this country's history as the Declaration of Independence, Preamble to the Constitution, Nothing to fear but Fear itself, Ask not what your country can do for you, etc. What is wrong with you? Why would you diminish? It's really counter-productive in the worst of sour apple ways.

Final Note: I agree -- having studied and written on these and other speeches, I agree that Obama's speech today is the best since MLK's....

than Wright's. He scared TPTB so much they had to put him down.

Wright does not inspire fear nor does he have a following outside of his community. He's been effectively marginalized as a crazy old man.

Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 12:37 PM by calimary
It was a speech that does indeed deserve to go down in all those books about great speeches. A truly moving speech that confronted all the difficulties and dicey moments. Even tipped the hat to Hillary - in referencing "the white woman trying to break a glass ceiling." It was all inclusive. A uniter, not a divider. It was WONDERFUL!!!

Man - look who we have, poised to lead. Compared to the smarmy old fart who's still fighting a war that ended 30 years ago, still has his macho on the line (maybe because he feels his POW years short-sheeted his John Wayne shtick before he could play it out on the battlefield to his fullest satisfaction), and has a dangerous, hair-trigger temper I hope we never have to clean up after. And btw - if he was such a Big Man, why didn't he stand up for his own wife and adopted daughter when the rovians were smearing them up one side of South Carolina and down the other?

Dr. King would probably be thrilled to pass the torch, and drape the mantle across Barack's shoulders as a true heir of his movement. HE was the Moses who wouldn't get to the Promised Land with us. I'd suspect that he'd see Barack Obama as his Joshua. He'd regard Obama as a son, for sure. Dr. King just found an open and ready hand to which to pass the baton.

41. It is the most important speech on race
Obama's stature and the situation made it so de facto. Moreover, he delivered a great speech. I'm worried that it will become a benchmark for discussing race and politics but won't be enough to stem the tide. I also think that Clinton missed an opportunity herself, playing the healing figure rather than let Obama lead with this speech.

47. Not even close
MLK didn't give his great speech as an egotist looking for the presidency by working damage control. Big difference.

55. MotherF. I missed it! I did say this yesterday though.
"I think in the end, "people" will be sorry they've given Barack Obama an opportunity to respond?"

80. It's a moot point. Neither Clinton nor McCain would make such a speech. nt

81. Neither Clinton nor McCain COULD make such a speech..
even with the same words thier presentation would not have near the impact. Obama is a world class inspirational speaker, better even than Bill Clinton was. His leadership potential is incredible. Like nothing we've seen in a presidential candidate since RFK

Hillary comes across as a dry policy wonk.. with an irritating voice. I watch and listen to her and I just know she's bottling up one hell of a temper. There's a lot of buried anger in that lady.

McCain is just nuts.. and his constant "my friends" thing drives me up a wall
