Would Obama be a uniter if
he didn't listen to the concerns of the African American community? This is what I am hearing from some of the people here who keep harping on the Wright issue. Apparently people think it is impossible for Obama to be part of the African American community and to listen to the concerns of the African American community, to try to understand the frustration and anger that Wright expresses, and to at the same time, listen to the concerns of the white community on racial issues. Of course what Obama understands is that all Americans share many of the same issues. So, what do all you people who keep harping on Wright think? Would you like Obama if he had renounced his ties to TUCC 19 years ago and went to a predominantly white church in an attempt to appear tolerant? Clearly many of the people here who are harping about Wright think the only way to be a uniter is to listen to the concerns of one side only, either Obama completely repudiates his ties to his African American pastor or Obama holds the exact same views as his pastor. I think this is called a false dichotomy in logic. But, there really are other alternatives. Maybe someone could listen to the concerns of many sides. I would say this makes one a uniter, not a hypocrite.

5. "listen?"
I disagree with the characterization in your attempt to minimize the 20 year relationship as "listening." Look at the way Michelle Obama talks. The pastor has had an influence.

10. So you are saying because you
see evidence that Michelle Obama was influenced by Wright in a certain way, that means Obama was influenced in the exact some way. This post just proves my point. So, you are saying that every word that comes out of Michelle Obama's mouth is a representation of Barack Obam's beliefs. My husband is an agnostic; I am a Catholic and have an academic background in theology (up to and including a terminal degree). Sometimes my husband is REALLY critical of religion. Now, should anyone who hears my husband issue negative statements think that these statements represent my position. SHould I take my husband out and repudiate him in public? Should I make every issue in our relationship revolve around our different views of religion? What do you think? You know what? Sometimes, I try to listen to what my husband says about this even though I find it disturbing sometimes. Should I just deal with the fact that many people are very critical of religion by denouncing any one who challenges it? For some reason, I think there is some value in trying to understand where people's criticisms come from.

8. Your excluded middle and your non sequitur show off your false logic.

When you wrote:

Firstly, you exclude more moderate African American churches which Obama could go to while renouncing the racist hate mongering of Wright. Secondly, you add even more false logic in the very same statement with the non sequitur renouncing Wright might require Obama to attend another church.

9. Perhaps

but I am just phrasing the dichotomy in the way most of the Wright harping posts address the issue. Why don't you go point out the false logic on the anti-Obama harping on Wright posts. You have to admit that attributing Wright's views to Obama just because Obama attended church there in not logical, especially since no one seems to be able to come up with anything that Obama actually said.
