If his mentor and spiritual guide was Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church (you know, the "god hates fags" funeral-picketing scum), would people be so quick to say that just because Obama attended Phelps's church it doesn't mean that he agrees with what Phelps says? After all, you couldn't hold Obama responsible for Phelps's opinions just because he went to his church. In fact, Phelps is just like a crazy uncle who says some things that you don't agree with, and you're just cherry-picking the "god hates fags" quotes and the funeral picketing. Have you ever been to one of his Sunday sermons? I'm sure he talks about much more than that.

Better still, what if McCain was a member of Westboro Baptist Church? Would you be so quick to write it off as a non-issue?

I believe you can get a glimpse of who someone is by the company they keep. 32. That's a fair question, so let me try to explain why I think the situations would differ...

The Westboro Baptist Church is a cult, made up of no more than 30 people, most of whom are members of Phelps's family. It is for the most part closed off from the public, and located in a highly guarded compound in Topeka (when the 'congregation' is not out picketing funerals for gay people or dead soldiers, that is).

Trinity is the one of the largest churches in Chicago, and the UCC is a mainstream Christian denomination. Trinity is open to the public and thousands of people attended the services there; are they all anti-white bigots? Isn't it a little bit more reasonable to think that there might be more than a few people who just go to Trinity to worship their God, and that they can and will disagree with the crazy pastor when he gets crazy?

So yeah, if somehow, Barack Obama were a member of the WBC, then it's probably fair to assume he hates gay people. I just don't feel that way about the UCC.
