Headline: Obama blames 1960's for his pastor's comments

Barack Obama Friday blamed fiery 1960s-era conditioning for racially inflammatory remarks by his former pastor and a prominent backer of Hillary Clinton.

In a wide ranging interview with Tribune editors and reporters, Obama denounced controversial sermons from Rev. Jeremiah Wright in which the just-retired pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago called on blacks to condemn the United States and accused U.S. leaders of state-sponsored terrorism that invited the Sept. 11 attacks.

At the same time, Obama sought to explain the context of those and other controversial Wright statements by drawing a connection to recent comments by Geraldine Ferraro, the former New York congresswoman. Ferraro recently stepped down from Clinton's campaign after saying that Obama enjoyed an electoral advantage over Clinton in the Democratic presidential contest because he was black...

Obama compared Wright to an uncle he was fond of but with whom he disagreed, adding: "Like a lot of African American men of fierce intelligence who came of age , he has a lot of the language and the memories and the baggage of those times."

5. No, that's not it...

He said that there were two generations, and that Wright's rhetoric was of an older generation's who had struggled so that he (Barack) could be where he is todayl.

So quite misinterpreting and misrepresenting what was said, please.

6. No he's not.
He is willfully ignorant of what happened during those times and those events are important.

10. You're willfully ignorant..

Because you are not taking what Obama said, but going off of someone' interpretation.

13. He has a total political tin ear - if not a certain amount of animosity about that decade.
Someone mentioned earlier today that he missed that decade entirely because he was not living in this country. He arrived in Hawaii in the 70s and the main land in the late 70s or early 80s. Therefore, he doesn't know/understand much about that period. It is also important to remember that in addition to not having the early American cultural experience he was raised by members of the WWII generation.

When I hear him talk about the 60s in such an odd way I always think he is exhibiting anger toward his parents.

9. So why does he go to a church where the '60s live in the pastor?
Why be reminded of it?

I just don't get it.

When they had to walk around with "I am a man" shirts so they wouldn't be called out of their names?

20. I am a child of the 60s, and I agree that it is a 60s thing
I had friends in the Black Power movement when I was in college in New York. I remember when Fred Hampton, here in Chicago, was gunned down, along with his family, inside his apartment. That is something that people here in Chicago have never gotten over. I am aware of the actual torture--yes, those words are completely apt--that was inflicted on black prisoners in the Chicago prison system here, back when Richard M. Daley, the current mayor, was AG. You really do have to understand the 1960s, and the various liberation theology movements--and you have to understand what it means to be black in a city like Chicago, a city as black as many southern ones, to understand where someone like a Wright is coming from.

Obama is of a different generation.
