Obama's Minister of Hate
March 14, 2008 -- Which of these outrageous positions of his pastor and longtime spiritual advisor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, does Barack Obama endorse?

That African-Americans should not say "God Bless America," but rather "God damn America" for "killing innocent people"?

That 9/11 was a case of "America's chickens coming home to roost"?

That Zionism has an element of "white racism"?

The one implied by his decision to make a pilgrimage to Libyan dictator Moammar Khadafy with Louis Farrakhan - a man Wright's church has hailed for having "truly epitomized greatness"?

These are not idle questions. And certainly not unfair ones.

...

Now ABC News says it has reviewed dozens of Wright's sermons - and found repeated public denunciations of America.

In response to media inquiries about the relationship, Obama has condemned some of Wright's more incendiary remarks and sidestepped others by saying he wasn't in church that day.

As recently as this week, his campaign has insisted, "There are things says with which Sen. Obama deeply disagrees."

1. plonk
Plonk is a Usenet jargon term for adding a particular poster to one's kill file such that the poster's future postings are completely ignored. It was first used in 1989 and by 1994 was a commonly used term on Usenet regarding kill file additions.

The word is an example of onomatopoeia, intended to humorously represent the supposed sound<1> of the user hitting the kill file. It is also sometimes given as an acronym standing for Please Log Off, Net Kook, though this is likely a backronym. Other used expressions are "put lamer on killfile" <2> and Please Leave Our Newsgroup: Killfile!

Rovian.

But, they'll flock to this thread as though they've never said anything like that about her and condemn this thread.

7. do you seriously not see the difference?
Hillary is using a campaign strategy to appeal to the worst in people - she is using racism to get votes.

Obama has a Pastor that said some things that you don't agree with. The Pastor has freedom of speech, Obama has freedom of Religion. They are not using this as a campaign strategy to appeal to the worst in people.

25. Obama should cut all ties with him as McCain should cut all ties
with his two idiots as Hillary should cut all ties with her redneck opus dei group.

No one has clean hands in this issue. My pastor was a fucker too. they pretty much all are in some circles of what passes for christianity now. That is why I don't go to church anymore. I go straight to the source. I am not responsible for my idiot saying not to vote for X because they are X.

I am frequently distressed how often DUers express their despise for this country, and how they are applauded.

I posted for two weeks at one of the Sites That Shall Not Be Named, and they loved to point out the DU "Hate America" threads. I was willing to go toe-to-toe with the knuckledraggers on most issues, but I could never muster even a tiny spark to defend that attitude.

So, for me it's easy -- I find Wright's comments way over the top and I would never defend him. But, I find it amusing that suddenly DU is up in arms that some loose cannon could shout, "God damn America" in a public forum.

Damn. Just damn.

4. "Denunciations of America?"
So, Obama is supposed to "denounce and reject" anyone who says anything that might offend white people (e.g., Farrakhan) but no one is ever supposed to "denounce" the behavior of the United States.

15. Freeper?
I don't think it's a freeper question to ask what is Obama's relation to a man who cries out God damn America. The guy has been Obama's minister for years, he married them, he baptized their kids. This isn't some fringe character in Obama's past. So to the big public out there, who will be voting in a general election, it is a totally proper question to ask Obama about this topic.

23. Isn't that what we all should say
when America does what America shouldn't do? Fundies certainly have little room to complain since their people regularly say that God will curse America because America tolerates homosexuals. I am far more comfortable with Wright's message. God damn slavery. God damn racism. God damn imperialism. God damn torture.

When America practices slavery, racism, imperialism, and torture, then ...

It's not a message that plays well in Peoria, but I am not gonna join the rightwing in denouncing it or shooting the messenger. I think it's a message that sometimes America needs to hear.

28. Distinction
He wasn't saying god damn any of those specific things. I'd be all behind that. He said god damn america, repeatedly. Those are not mainstream Dem views, and Obama needs to get on this. Trust me, I'm not saying America is above reproach. Of course we should criticize the country when needed, but yelling out God damn America is a pretty jarring thing to hear. You are very correct that it will not play well in Peoria.

I think this will die out by November.

29. he said specific things in the video I saw
it wasn't just damn, damn, damn. Each exclamation was in response to a point. It wasn't just about America, it was about America doing those specific things. Thus I don't have a problem with it, seem in context, but CBS just did a story on Obama strongly denouncing it.

14. you obviously don't just eat the cake
that is being force fed you-

Thank you for that-

Pointing out our own murderous acts isn't something we Americans tend to do very often, or honestly.
It's about time we told the truth to ourselves.
We are not perfect, or 'innocent'. Admitting that is a good first step toward becoming what we claim to be.
peace~

16. I'll endorse some of those
1) God should approve when America kills innocent people? I don't think so. Killing innocent people is wrong, and I don't expect that to have God's blessing.

2) certainly if so many Americans had not voted for Bush, then the Supreme court would never have been able to select him and he wouldn't have LIHOP. Wright is making the point that some people in the world hate us for a reason. Maybe we should look at the evil things we do in the world with US foreign policy.

3) I'm not a big fan of Zionism, as opposed to Judaism. Insofar as they are thinking of themselves as a "chosen people" that does seem like a degree of racism.

4) Calling it a 'pilgrimage' is an unfair question. There is nothing necessarily sinister about visiting a foreign leader. What was the stated purpose of their visit? To learn something about that country? To challenge Khadafy to be a better leader? You ask that question as if they were paying homage as the primary purpose of their trip. As for Farrakhan, I guess Wright see him helping in some good causes, and he probably does. Obama has already publicly repudiated some of Farrakhan's statements.

"Repeated public denunciations of America". You can find plenty of those on DU, especially America as mis-lead by the Bush Administration. I might very well join Wright in many of those denunciations. A denunciation of the racism, greed, imperialism, selfishness, torture, unprovoked war, etc., that America often engages in, is not the same as a denunciation of America. It is a call for America to be better, to be more like it is supposed to be.

18. Rev .Wright on Natalee Holloway:the memory of a missing and presumed dead American teenage girl
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 12:44 PM by indimuse
How will this play out?

Obama's pastor disses Natalee Holloway

Sen. Barack Obama's longtime friend and spiritual adviser trashed the memory of a missing and presumed dead American teenage girl, according to church publications reviewed by WND.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the controversial minister of Obama's church in Chicago, cited the case of Natalee Holloway's disappearance in Aruba in complaining about what he sees as the media's bias in covering white victims of crime over black victims.

"Black women are being raped daily in Darfur, Sudan, in the Congo and in Sub-Saharan Africa. That doesn't make news," Wright said in the August 2005 edition of Trumpet Magazine, a publication of his Trinity United Church of Christ.

But, "One 18-year-old white girl from Alabama gets drunk on a graduation trip to Aruba, goes off and 'gives it up' while in a foreign country, and that stays in the news for months!" he added. "Maybe I am missing something!"

~

In the same 2005 church publication, Wright suggested "white America" had the 9/11 attacks coming, while calling for business "divestment from Israel," which he refers to as a "racist" state along with America.

~

Though Wright has nurtured Obama's political career as a close adviser and mentor, the Democrat presidential hopeful says they don't agree on everything. Wright married Obama and baptized his daughters.

... Wright sang the praises of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has described whites as "blue-eyed devils" and Jews as "bloodsuckers."

"He brings a perspective that is helpful and honest," Wright said. "Minister Farrakhan will be remembered as one of the 20th and 21st century giants of the African-American religious experience."

Wright then held Farrakhan up as a pillar of "integrity."

~

On Nov. 2, 2007, Wright presented Farrakhan with a "lifetime achievement" award ... tribute included a three-and-a-half minute video lionizing "the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan."

If Natalie Holloway's death is a huge tragedy (and it is) then why isn't the death of thousands even more of a tragedy?

Maybe if a few more people were willing to tell the truth and make public denunciations of America for its crimes against humanity we could finally have some hope of meaningful change away from our violent, oppressive, hegemonic state. But no, instead we have to live in a society of faux patriotism.

deeply agrees with Wright on.

There must be a lot, he is his protege after all. 20 years of allegiance with this pastor he must have strong agreements with the man. What exactly are they?

I seriously doubt that Barack considers Wright to be any sort of political mentor.
