Obama Campaign SKEWERS Clinton. You Gotta See This!
http://www.npr.org/blogs/news/2008/03/obama_campaign_skewers_clinton.html

Wednesday morning, the Clinton campaign sent reporters and bloggers covering the campaign a statement that consisted of questions and comments under the title of "Keystone Test: Obama Losing Ground."

The Obama campaign's communications department decided to annotate those questions and comments with some comments of their own... and boy, they held nothing back.

Below you'll find the annotated e-mail that has been making the rounds of the media. The Obama campaign's comments are in bold.

To: Interested Parties
From: Clinton Campaign
Date: Wednesday, March 12, 2008
Re: Keystone Test: Obama Losing Ground Get ready for a good one.

The path to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue goes through Pennsylvania so if Barack Obama can't win there, how will he win the general election?

Answer: I suppose by holding obviously Democratic states like California and New York, and beating McCain in swing states like Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia and Wisconsin where Clinton lost to Obama by mostly crushing margins. But good question.

After setbacks in Ohio and Texas, Barack Obama needs to demonstrate that he can win the state of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is the last state with more than 15 electoral votes on the primary calendar and Barack Obama has lost six of the seven other largest states so far -- every state except his home state of Illinois.

If you define "setback" as netting enough delegates out of our 20-plus-point wins in Mississippi and Wyoming to completely erase any delegate advantage the Clinton campaign earned out of March 4th, then yeah, we feel pretty setback.

Pennsylvania is of particular importance, along with Ohio, Florida and Michigan, because it is dominated by the swing voters who are critical to a Democratic victory in November. No Democrat has won the presidency without winning Pennsylvania since 1948. And no candidate has won the Democratic nomination without winning Pennsylvania since 1972.

What the Clinton campaign secretly means: PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT WE'VE LOST 14 OF THE LAST 17 CONTESTS AND SAID THAT MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA WOULDN'T COUNT FOR ANYTHING. Also, we're still trying to wrap our minds around the amazing coincidence that the only "important" states in the nominating process are the ones that Clinton won.

But the Obama campaign has just announced that it is turning its attention away from Pennsylvania.

Huh?

This is not a strategy that can beat John McCain in November.

I don't think Clinton's strategy of losing in state after state after promising more of the same politics is working all that well either.

In the last two weeks, Barack Obama has lost ground among men, women, Democrats, independents and Republicans -- all of which point to a candidacy past its prime.

"A candidacy past its prime." These guys kill me.

For example, just a few weeks ago, Barack Obama won 68% of men in Virginia, 67% in Wisconsin and 62% in Maryland. He won 60% of Virginia women and 55% of Maryland women. He won 62% of independents in Maryland, 64% in Wisconsin and 69% in Virginia. Obama won 59% of Democrats in Maryland, 53% in Wisconsin and 62% in Virginia. And among Republicans, Obama won 72% in both Virginia and Wisconsin.

But now Obama's support has dropped among all these groups.

That's true, if you don't count all the winning we've been up to. As it turns out, it's difficult to maintain 40-point demographic advantages, even over Clinton

In Mississippi, he won only 25% of Republicans and barely half of independents. In Ohio, he won only 48% of men, 41% of women and 42% of Democrats. In Texas, he won only 49% of independents and 46% of Democrats. And in Rhode Island, Obama won just 33% of women and 37% of Democrats.

I'm sympathetic to their attempt to parse crushing defeats. And I'm sure Rush Limbaugh's full-throated endorsement of Clinton didn't make any difference. Right

Why are so many voters turning away from Barack Obama in state after state?

You mean besides the fact that we're ahead in votes, states won and delegates?

In the last few weeks, questions have arisen about Obama's readiness to be president. In Virginia, 56% of Democratic primary voters said Obama was most qualified to be commander-in-chief. That number fell to 37% in Ohio, 35% in Rhode Island and 39% in Texas.

Only the Clinton campaign could cherry pick states like this. But in contrast to their logic, in the most recent contest of Mississippi, voters said that Obama was more qualified to be commander in chief than Clinton by a margin of 55-42.

So the late deciders -- those making up their minds in the last days before the election -- have been shifting to Hillary Clinton. Among those who made their decision in the last three days, Obama won 55% in Virginia and 53% in Wisconsin, but only 43% in Mississippi, 40% in Ohio, 39% in Texas and 37% in Rhode Island.

If only there were enough late deciders for the Clinton campaign to actually be ahead, they would really be on to something.

If Barack Obama cannot reverse his downward spiral with a big win in Pennsylvania, he cannot possibly be competitive against John McCain in November.

If they are defining downward spiral as a series of events in which the Clinton campaign has lost more votes, lost more contests and lost more delegates to us ... I guess we will have to suffer this horribly painful slide all the way to the nomination and then on to the White House.

Thanks for the laughs guys. This was great.

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:39 PM by truedelphi
That makes him a war hero.(It also leaves him damages by PTSD in such a way that it scares me to think of him leading our nation.)
Hillary - captive to the dissonance that comes when you serve a philandering spouse - that makes her
a co-dependent person who probably should not be leading the country.

91. So, when does Obama begin to sell himself to Hillary's supporters...
...thus far he does nothing but reacting to and attacking Hillary. He is obviously avoiding talking about his policy positions.

Obama and his supporters are driving Hillary supporters away from him, they have alienated 1/3 of the party thus far.

70% of Clinton supporters say they will not vote for him, and can you blame them? Obamas supporters in the media basically treat her and her supporters like shit.

I have yet to see a single Obama supporter in the media or on DU that tries to sell Obama on policy.

Why is this?

98. Our corporate owned media never talks about policy...
...I'm sure Obama talks about policy during these huge Obama rallies. The media only picks up on mud slinging. Luckily for Obama, Hillary sure knows how to sling it. The more ridiculous she is, the more the American public gets to realized that Obama knows how to confront adversities without losing control.

112. Quite frankly he doesn't need to
do anything but react to Hillary's attack adds...He's winning, not the other way around.
By the way, when responding to false or misleading arguments, its called defending yourself (or in this case, the campaign)...not an attack.

Obama doesn't need to "sell" anything. This is not a thrift-mart, and you are not debating on which candy bar to buy. You'll either vote or you wont. You'll either have a hand in the direction of this country or you wont.

As for Obama's Policy, no one needs to prove anything to you, or convince you of anything. People will choose as they see fit...as you have shown you've already done (mostly through your selective hearing and vision). I doubt any discussion made here would change your mind.

124. I guess noone has seen the March 17th cover of Newsweek -- Poor Gender Issue Hilary -- Boo Hoo!
Nice try, but I was at the grocery store last night and saw the latest issue of Newsweek.

It was filled with a story that questions how disadvantaged Hilary is due to her Gender.

Boo Hoo. Perhaps they should pay more attention to her character, contacts, past dealings and the company she keeps.

Gender means nothing to me. I believe in meritocracy, and Hilary is a low level middle manager, that can't communicate effectively, even though she claims to have been a lawyer at some point in her life. Now the Gender card is thrust onto the cover of Newsweek. That's rich.

I used to be ambivalent about Clinton vs Obama but not anymore, not after she pulled our her slimey deck of cards. Obama's team has really impressed me with their maturity level.

Who do we want going toe to toe with someone like Putin? An unstable woman surrounded by other people with questionable judgement who see the world through a sexist prism or calm adults? Obama won hands down. And it was Clinton's own fault.

Sorry for that video. It's one of those other reasons Obama needs to win because if that videos any indication of what we'd get for the next 4 years, uh, no thanks!

Obama is following the 50 state we can win everywhere campaign.

Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Georgia, Virginia all have a chance to be blue states this year if the Dems don't blow it.

Dont believe me? Did you know the Dems took Hastert's seat in red IL-14th last weekend?

73. He's the creation of an Illinois State Senator who decided to see
if he could play kingmaker...he's also a liar (I will serve my full first term and will not seek higher office in 2008), a (and this one he shares with a majority of his supporters) race baiter (come on, Bill Clinton says that JJ won SC and so did Obama so what does that prove and you all jump on the race thing)...here's a CLUE, he was speaking in terms of the nomination i.e. JJ won SC and didn't win the nomination therefore you could not crown Obama after that win either, but look at all the mileage they have got/are getting out of that one. He has little or no voice of his own (if you do ANY research on his "positions" you will find someone with little or no policies of his "own") and he thinks that being a junior senator is just TOO hard (someone call the waaaambulance please).

In addition he has surrounded himself with bigots (McClurkin) and racists (Rev. Wright) and yet does not share their views (yet Hillary obviously shares the same view of the lowest peon in her campaign, isn't it OBVIOUS).

This crap would be hilarious if it wasn't HYPOCRISY in it's highest form.

If you want to talk about Rovian tactics, why don't you talk about the Team Obama ruse of having something dropped into the media by a "third" party and then stewing around for a while before the "last great hope" :puke: decides it has had enough time to take hold so he can come out and "distance" himself and remain pure and above the fray.

Incidentally, we have had two previous candidates that wanted to win pretty...how did that turn out for us...you complain that Clinton will do anything to win...NEWS FLASH...that is what it is going to take for it to happen.

And finally, I have seen some pretty funny shit about Republicans crossing over to keep Hillary in the race...what about the Obama campaign's flier that asked them to do just that...hmmmm, so Rush took a page from the Obama manual and suddenly, the outrage is off the charts.

The esteemed Senator from Illinois is running on a platform that was Built by Emil Jones Jr while he was in the State Senate, a blank slate, to timid to vote or establish positions on pretty much anything (and yes, if he was SO against the war in Iraq, how come he hasn't done SHIT about it since joining the Senate?? I THOUGHT SO).

He is an egomaniac if you watch him at all when he is truly questioned about issues that threaten him. He can't be bothered with those things, yet when he is on the HOPE stump, he can't wait to flatten your ears with some more bullshit (and I know a thing or too about bullshit, my granddad has a B.S. in it).

In closing again, stop being pissed off when your candidate gets a little mud in his eye and then go all gleeful when the mud is sailing the other direction...it exposes you for the colossal hypocrite that you are.

83. Decent points, but . . .
re: creation of an Illinois State Senator Kingmaker - everyone gets started somewhere;

re: liar about not seeking higher office - Probably one of the most commonly broken promises in politics and life in general ("If you take this job, will you be looking for a better, higher paying, more influential job in the future, or will you sit there quietly for 20 years")

The race/color of his skin will unfortunately be a consideration through the process, and I expect the Repugs will be eager to use it (and his middle name) in the general election should he proceed that far.

re: bigots and racists - Obama's going to have to distance himself from such people or he will be torn apart by the right wing attack machine . . .

re: lack of substance/positions etc. - he has the easy postion in the general election of being against everything George W. Bush is for (and being younger, more mentally alert and less psycho than the potential Repug candidate).

The great game of politics is being played. We have an excellent battle of two candidates with relative strengths and weaknesses doing everything they can to sling mud at each other while trying to keep themselves clean. Whomever prevails here will have the best chance in the general election.

and by the way, welcome to DU . . .

84. Hardly a lie
"he's also a liar (I will serve my full first term and will not seek higher office in 2008)"

I don't think that there is much reason to believe he did not mean it when he said it. You can of course complain that he did not stick to his promise/intention/however you want to see it.
But sometimes the political landscape changes. And when several older members of the party says that you have a shot and should take it - that is such a change. And why not do it then?
I am pretty sure that by far the larger part of the people that voted him in office can forgive him for seeking even more influence.

Painting it as a lie is disengenious, when there is no fact to back up that he knew different when he said it.

I don't think snarkiness wins here.

I think one point needs to be driven home here. Changing the rules in the middle of the game IS cheating. They needn't come out and say it directly. They simply need to hammer it home at every opportunity. "Clinton is attempting to change the rules in the middle of the game," "If the Republicans did this we would call it cheating."

I just think there is a better way to articulate them than in direct response to a Clinton e-mail.

117. My first post
My background:

I've been an independent for my entire adult life. I'm now mid 30s. I'll be voting for Obama. However, for you Hillary folks, please keep reading.

My dad is the most conservative person I know, the most conservative person I've ever known. He's been a "Hillary Hater" since she was first mentioned as a potential first lady. Over the years, he's written nasty limericks, called into conservative talk shows, "Freeped", and engaged in all sorts of worthless, basically vile activity. It's always repulsed me, and in fact, I've felt shame over this.

As simple a lurker, I've visited Free Republic, and I've mostly felt ill. There are a few intelligent posters there, btw, but it's just that I don't have anything at all in common with their political ideologies.

Now, I visit Democratic Underground which seems to me to be the leftish version of Free Republic. And are you guys any different? The pics that Obama supporters cherry pick of Hillary looking awful are disgraceful. That's someone's mother. That's someone's wife. That's someone's aunt. I do not feel any kind of kinship with an Obama supporter who would post something like that any more then I feel a connection with a Hillary supporter who would post footage from Obama's old pastor.

It's ugly, vile, and underhanded. How can any of you post like this, talk like this, and continue to hit under the belt - JUST LIKE FREEPERS - and not feel sick to your stomach at what you've become. How are you any different then my dad? I just don't see it.

There is easily as much pure hatred on these boards these days as does exist at Free Republic, and it's appalling.

Here's the real kicker... My dad is laughing right now. Literally, he's in stitches at what you guys are doing to each other. It's like we've turned all of the Democrats into 10 year olds and stuck them on an island in a William Golding novel.

"'Maybe there is a beast....maybe it's only us.'"
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 5

"The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away."
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 5

"'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'"
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 7

"The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering."
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 7

"He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief.'"
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 8

"They were glad to touch the brown backs of the fence that hemmed in the terror and made it governable."
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 9

"'after all we aren't savages really...'"
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 11

"Which is better--to have laws and agree, or to hunt and kill?"
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 11

When I hear some of the people post on Democratic Underground, you sound no better. The empty, hateful rhetoric, it always boils to the surface. And any one of you, if you contribute to that duologue, you are part of the problem and not the solution.

In my VERY humble opinion, I feel like the Obama campaign has slung comparatively less mud then the Clinton one. However, it's a draw when its comes to each of their supporters. It's true that God makes man in his own image, but it's certainly not true that politicians make supporters in their own image. We're all fond of speaking the truth, that "politicians are all crooks and liars", and yet we're so willing to cast buckets full of stones from within our scant, glass houses.

125. Welcome to DU!
:hi: :kick:

And a thoughtful post to start with!

My goal all along is to focus my anger at the candidate in question, but never at her supporters. Hillary can take it - she choose of her own free will to enter the frey; and believe me, I am offended daily by her Rovarian tactics.

But I do not diss her supporters or post hate filled rants at them. Why eat our own? Eventually, Obama will need Hillary and her supporters to win the GE. If we don't unify - we don't win (both in the real world, as a party, and on DU).

Good start jettison, look forward to hearing what you have to say for your 1000th. No rush though :)

peace~

116. New here - Hi, I'm an Obama supporter
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:47 PM by jonestonesusa
Hi, everyone. Thanks for the discussion - I'm excited to contribute. I've been reading the Obama-Clinton threads for a while...finally, I had to weigh in.

As an Obama supporter, I am aware of the hill he has to climb in this race still. Even us Democrats and left independents have not stuck to the issues; instead, we go in for partisanship much of the time. I do have one thing to say about the smear campaign that is going to be a part of this election - what will come in the next few months will show where our country is at. We've been sweeping divisions under the rug and many of us have lost our ability to get past the hype and reason independently. Even on this progressive site, so many of us are slinging around media impressions like they're fact. I support Obama because he truly started from the grassroots, and I hope that he will keep that connection and bring it to the White House. I also support him because I do not think he will continue the drug war/war on terror mind set that none of us progressive likes and African Americans like me may be especially resistant too.

So, as I post here, I will make no secret that I'm an Obama supporter, and I welcome other people's views of other candidates. I'm willing to be converted if I'm shown where I'm wrong - that's why I like to have political dialogue. If people are unable to make a reasoned argument about their own candidate, their own country, their own future, and want to rely on slogans and slurs, everyone will suffer. And I do think Obama is making a much better effort to stick to the issues in this campaign - better than Clinton, at least.

So - you'll see me here off and on, looking forward to the discussion.

122. It's Not Hilary thats so out of touch -- It's the DLC and this is the only way they know
Hilary is shackled to the DLC which has tried desperately to turn the Democrats into Corporate loving, neo-conservative "Centrists". They believe that the real democrats are dope smoking, uneducated and unorganized.

They could never be more mistaken. In the early days of the DLC, I could see worth in becoming a bit more conservative in order to win elections, but they have forgotten that the Republicans took the DLC's playbook and ran with it. When the DLC shills voted for the Iraq war, they had no idea that Bush and Rove would be so bold as to shut out competitive bidding in the Iraq war. TheDLC cronies expected to be equal partners in the war profiteering to come.

Now that we see where we are. GMO contamination of our food supply, Financial market melting down due to the removal of imporant safeguards like Glass Steagall act under Clinton, and the inexorable push by the DLC into NeoCon territory, the True Democratic party is now more united than ever to sweep this inneffective gang of Corporate lawyers out of office.

The DLC and Hilary are like the Titanic. Once they get moving it is very difficult to change course. We are the Kayakers, able to maneuver into the sweet spot at will, under our own power, and they are reeling from the awesome power of one million feet coming down at once, cracking the foundation of the DLC and Republican strongholds.

I urge everyone to do a deep search of the DLC and that damage they have done to our party. They need to be exposed for who they really are, and relegated to the dustbin where they belong.

126. I'd prefer Obama over Hillary over McCain
but one of the unfortunate things about Hillary being president is the validation of the DLC, their shitty policies, and the shitty way they like to run campaigns (be repub lite and try to get 50% +1). I really like what Dean has done with his 50 state strategy, and if the DLC gets more power they would kill it.
