Poll question: Poll: Do you know the political views of the pastor who baptized your Children?
Just wondering how many people know the personal political views of the pastor who baptized your children.

48. Why?
I don't have any kids but when I was looking for a church to be baptised in, I talked to the pastors quite a bit and picked the kindest, warmest and most Christ-like person I found. Not only did it assure me the church itself would be a pleasant place for me but that my memories of the baptism would be all-around good. That's an emotionally powerful event and you want the people involved to be the right people. I can't imagine it being different for parents wishing their child baptised.

2. I didn't know the priests who baptized my kids. I didn't care
who they were, or what they thought, I just needed them to do the sacrament, because that's their job.

Either that pastor or Obama? If I remember correctly that church is HUGE and has several. Probably lots of different services every week, too.
No clue what my pastor thinks about politics.

He married us and baptized my children, and I don't agree with his views at all (republican if you haven't figured it out.) It's not easy trying to find a progressive liberal priest in the Orthodox church!

17. kids are not baptized as babies in my church but
I have left about 5 churches because the pastor has preached something that is anti women or tacitly endorsed the republican candidate. When we lived in Arkansas we visited a new chuch...it was fourth of July and Huckabee was the guest speaker...

I have to say that we stayed for the entertainment value....I wish I had that one on film.

22. Silly question...
Political views have nothing to do with baptism,
or any of the sacraments.

People of faith, of ANY faith have a diverse
world view, and diversity in ANY form is good.

Screening religious leadership for political
narrowness is mean-spirited and not in the
framework of religious tolerance and acceptance.

31. My mother lead me out the aisle
of the Baptist church our family attended for years when the pastor spoke politics from the pulpit. In the middle of services. And she agreed with him politically. She was a righteous person.

Me? As a gay person, I can know the political and religious views of anyone at will by simply mentioning my boyfriend. Snap, I get the whole picture. I'll say it is not always negative, at a family funeral on his side, an Episcopal cleric was freaking great to us, a real witness as they say, but still I knew her views were inclusive and liberal, didn't I?

I sure perfer Rev Wright to Donnie McClurkin or Caldwell or the rest of the basher Bush backers Obama employs. Wright is pretty good on gay issues, and Trinity UCC welcomes and employs gay people. If Obama had not stood with McClurkin and thrown me under the bus, I could really write some nice stuff about Trinity, and why all churchs are just as reflective of the cultures in which they function as Trinity is, if not more so. But I'm not going to.

47. You would be surprised how often this comes up in daily life for those of us that
are not Christians. If it was once a month that would be one thing but it is a constant drip of a majority viewpoint that Christianity is the normative american experience and that those that are not are somehow exceptions. Would it have killed you to have added another choice in the poll? So what is the point of the poll that makes it Christocentric and you specifically do not want to know say the political opinion of the Rabbi who conducts the Bar Mitzvah? Next time just label it exclusively for Christians.

Christians knew about their pastor's political views b/c I'm interested in what a reasonable expectation is for Obama, who is Christian and had his children baptized by that wacky preacher, on that issue.

That is what I'm interested in. I'm not going to apologize for my interest in that question.

40. Well, being Jewish and all
I don't have a pastor. But, I did belong to a synagogue in which I disagreed politically with the Rabbi - even became president of the congregation. I finally had enough and quit my leadership role and quit the synagogue; but it took me more than five years to do that. During the time I was a member while he was the rabbi, I would have been mortified if anyone equated me with his views. BTW, I left for other reasons than political...the guy was just a jerk.

I can't say I'm a really good one, but I disagree with the Church's position on abortion. But I'm not just a single-issue person and I think there are many reasons why someone would attend a church besides the official views of its leadership on a couple of issues.
