If the RW (or other Democrats) Make Wright an Issue
There is a simple solution that will quell all the foolishness about how "un-American" Obama's church is: bring out Oprah, who is a member of the church, too. Let her talk about the church and the way it helps the community, feeds people's faith and hope, and teaches an inspiring message about the inherent equality of LGBT people, women, and the impoverished.

You can say a lot of things about both the RW and about Oprah, but even the right wing nutjobs would be foolish to take on Oprah....because they would LOSE and lose BADLY. Of course, I know lots of DUers have problems with Oprah, but we would do to remember that, however unfashionable she might be hither and thither, she has a huge audience and, even among people who don't count themselves as part of her audience, she has earned respect for more than a generation.

So let her speak. And let them take her on. And we will see who wins.

15. Because the RW and fundies already hate Oprah
If the situation was reversed, it would be like Jane Fonda supporting Hillary's nutsy preacher. Jane is still hated even by many Dems

17. and the RW and fundies aren't going to vote Obama anyhow
Oprah appeals to middle America, including people who are not particularly involved in politics. And she appeals to moderate republicon women. In this campaign that celebrates powerful women when it is comfortable (and self-interested enough) to do so, let's remember that Oprah wields REAL power.

7. Even as a visitor
All she has to do is vouch for it.

The Repubs and certainly Hillary aren't going to go to war against her.

13. It's already out in the public that she was a member of that church
They can always point to Hagee and the other ministers who have said that 9/11 and katrina are a punishment on this country.

10. The fundies are already up in arms about Oprah.
It hasn't gone mainstream, but is evident on her message board.

Let Obama handle it the way he does everything else. Openly and honestly. No sneaky stuff from his campaign.

values. Let's remember that and save our vitriol for the RW fundies who support reactionary politics.

19. It's good of you to try and shed light on this issue, but
you need to understand that a large number of people on this board have no clue as to the make up and thinking within the AA community. Many feel comfortable that we give 90% of our vote to the Democrats, but fail to understand why 90% of us like and respect Louis Farrakhan.

I posted in another thread that, " Sunday morning is the most segregated/racist time in America." Most Americans have a vastly different experience on Sunday than AA's. Historically, that has been our time to consult and compare. Our Ministers not only have the role of spiritual leadership, but are heavily relied upon to provide social & political guidance as well.

You can continue to plead the case, but when it comes to the AA community, don't expect the historically ingrained paternalistic attitude to go away easily.

22. Very true
They should visit some other churches. Pastor can be considered mild compared to some of the other Pastors.

What people also don't understand is that they they an Afrocentric church is a segragated church. They think because the church says it's unashamedly black that it's some type of seperatist church that refuses to allow whites to worship with them. There are some white that go to Pastor Wright's church along with other African centered churches.
