I know, I know, a lot of people are feeling passionate about their candidate. Some are proclaiming other supporters are "racist" or "sexist" and such. This is upsetting to many. To me, it's a beautiful thing. Here's why...

We have 1 Female candidate and 1 African-American candidate competing for the office of President of the United States of America. This is absolutely amazing and glorious and a major turning point for our country. There is some other old white guy running too for the Republicans, but we all know he doesn't stand a chance at winning.

In the end, for the first time in the history of this country, either an African-American or a Woman will become the President of our country.

So for just a moment, in the eye of this hurricane, contemplate that and the beauty of this situation.

:grouphug:

It's pretty cool.

1. I wish I could share your enthusasim...
...but back in January, I was thinking--"How will the GOP react to a female or an African-American opponent?"

Now I know for sure what they would do. And no one's even gotten the nomination yet. Democrats have taken the lead in behaving like Republicans.

2. Don't be too sanguine
It is a year that favours the Democratic nominee, on the otherhand the Republicans have picked their best possible contender. McCain has good favorability ratings and a real appeal to independents and "Reagan Democrats". The Democratic primary race is a real mess, and depending on how it plays out, could hurt the eventual nominee.

Neither candidate was my favorite, but either is acceptable; their policy differences aren't really very great. My concern is that we will end up in a very nasty feud going into the convention, and that McCain will actually get his act together organizationally and message wise and then win in November.

I'm old enough not too wish to see a 1968 scenario again.

3. Welcome to the DU!
:hi:

And a fellow Oregonian too!

Your word of caution is wise, and I agree. I'm just caught up in this very special moment, despite all the anxiety and infighting going around. I honestly don't think McCain will come close to winning. Maybe I'm naive, but it's a strong feeling.
