The Obamite Compromise: Seat Florida. Re-vote Michigan. (Obama did not suggest this, just me)
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 04:30 PM by Buzz Clik
The Florida primary probably would not turn out much different than it was voted. Obama might pick up another 10% of the popular vote (50% Clinton, 33% Obama first time), and he might pick up ten extra delegates (105 versus 67 the first time). So, let it go.

First time around in Michigan, Obama was not even on the ballot, so accepting those results would be ridiculous. Clinton picked up 55% of the popular vote versus 40% for Uncommitted and 73 delegates for 55 delegates for Uncommitted. Clinton would do worse next time.

So, let's quit with the bickering and give it up: Seat Florida, Re-vote Michigan.

1. Exclude the super's from both states
for breaking the rules.

11. Sounds good to me (if they leave out the SDs from both states)
After all, some of those SDs were the ones who were so eager to break
the rules ...

20. No. There has to be some penalty for going against the rules.
The dems supported that legislation. Don't punish the voters, just the supers.

23. They can penalize in other areas, but dont F with peoples votes...
punish the politician, dont mess with the election.

pull funding from their next campaign or something... there are plenty of other ways to punish.

29. Right. I think that was what the person was saying. No superdelegates from those
states but do seat the Florida delegation and the results of a re-vote in Michigan.

6. Seems fair
Because if Obama is the nominee it wouldn't be smart to insult the Florida and Michigan voters if he wants to win the presidency.

This is a fair solution.

I say NO don't seat them. We KNEW when we voted our votes would not count. The majority of the people wheT to the polls to vote on the Homestead Amendment. Was it a cooincidence that the Republican Governor, who sponsored this Amendment, wanted the people at the polls EARLY?????

Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 04:38 PM by AtomicKitten
Nothing else matters. Not your opinion, not mine. All the candidates signed on to the disposition of Florida and Michigan 18 months ago. The only thing that has changed is that Hillary is losing and is desperately trying to find an angle to stay in the race. This nonstop campaign in the MSM to try to force a re-vote is insidious in its manipulative effort. If she is sincere - which I suspect she is not - about seating the delegates, split them equitably and be done with it.

17. I think the simplest solution is, penalize MI/FL half their delegates & supers.
Period, end of story. But award "uncommitted" in MI to Obama. If that can't be arranged, then there would have to be a re-vote in MI.

but in reality, how can you justify making one State revote and not the other when they both ignored DNC rules? Wouldn't this open the door for future Primary troubles?

26. What's going to happen is DNC is going to say screw you we'll go by the rules.
MI and FL will stand as they are because of the bickering with no outcome.

I'm really getting sick of this. The more this continues the more it is shown that Hillary is trying to cheat in MI. She is saying one thing when she left her name on the ballot and NOW she is working to get these delegates reinstated.

27. If they want them to count
they have to do them over. There really isn't anything to debate. They broke the rules. If I'm in a class with 48 other people and two of us break the rules taking a test and are told the results don't count that's only fair. There is nothing to whine, cry or complain about.

If the prof. is good enough to say - 'but you can take the test over' - the two of us would be fools not to jump at the chance, if we whine and cry and lobby to have our original tests counted that's just childish and absurd.

There is absolutely no reason to seat Florida and Michigan unless they hold legitimate primaries ... imho :)

33. All I'm saying is that the ball is in their court
If they want to have their votes counted they have to have legitimate primaries. It is out of the DLCs hands - if they are going to have primaries they have to let the DLC and the candidates know and lay out how they are going to go about it. If they opt not to have primaries then there is no point in discussing it further - at the moment FL and MI are out, and not coming to the convention. Changing that is up to them.

38. My feeling is this:
If we leave MI and FL out of the mix yet consider their delegates as part of the denominator in the calculation of 50%+1, then neither side has any chance of getting over the top before the convention in Denver. If we go to Denver with no one having the required 2025, then it will become a free-for-all, and the party will implode. We must fix this prior to the final primary.

I just don't think the party conference can compromise away its authority to set the rules.
This would be a nice compromise for the two candidates' interests, but I don't think the party can allow Florida's open, premeditated defiance of party's voting to stand. It would be like the NFL allowing teams to make their draft picks in any order. You don't get to jump ahead in line, no matter how bad you want to.

It needs to be a harsh enough penalty so this crap doesn't happen again in 4 years.

Strip the Superdelegates and cut the delegates in 1/2 in Florida, and revote in Michigan.

Would you propose that this change the "magic number" of 2025? It seems ludicrous that we'd strip numbers from the total but leave the denominator of for the critical mass the same.
