SEATTLE -- Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, apostle of optimism on the primary trail, began his remarks here last week with a zinger about President Bush's recent prime-time press conference. Edwards sported a near-orange tan, his trademark blue suit and red tie, and beamed, far more at ease on stage than the two US senators preceding him.
''You know it must be an amazing thing to live a life where, when you're asked multiple times whether you've questioned anything you've done, whether you've made any mistakes . . . you can't think of a single thing," he said. The 1,000-plus crowd began chortling loudly. Edwards's voice rose.

''Well I have a suggestion for the president. If he's struggling with that question, give me a call," he said. ''I'll give him an answer."

they don't let Bush out on his own like this anymore than they absolutely have to do. The mistake question was one where they couldn't help him through the ear piece. That question, and Bush's inability to answer it, may prove to be defining in November.

We know mistakes have been made. Admitting it would simply confirm what we already know. But I think a lot of people want to hear such an admission - and perhaps an apology as well. It doesn't even have to be an admission of guilt; it need only be an admission of failure.

Bush honestly believes he hasn't failed - at all. His answer indicates a lot about his character.

WTF? Kerry looked orange on MTP today (not just on my TV, others have said so as well). Is ManTan making a comeback? That stuff made people look like hell - as if people in the '70s needed ANY MORE HELP looking like hell...

6. I saw Edwards in person last summer and though, man, that guy has

great color for an old guy.

I can't believe he'd have a fake tan.

What I think is that the author of the article was a Republican trying to make a negative out of a positive. Edwards has good color for someone his age -- a dark, natural tan, and no grey hair -- so they pretend it's fake.

It's supposed to put one in mind of Al Gore's bad makeup job in the debates. Calling someone "orange" is a signifier of lameness which Republicans wield against Democrats.

I just have to say, in Edwards's case, it's unwarranted. If you see him in person you think, 'nice skin' and not 'orange skin.' Which is why this reporter is lying about it.

Their skin and the skin of "autumns" have warmer tones.

If the Repugs have nothing better to do than to criticize hair/skin/whatever color (and I was not aware that using cosmetics or hair dye was now a federal crime) perhaps they should examine why Reagan's hair was red in his 70s and W's changes with every season.

11. I remember The Big Dog

at a college question and answer session on C-SPAN a few months ago. He was asked the same question by a college student. His answer was quick and on target. He had no hesittion saying that he regretted not handlng Rwanda differently. He went on for about 5 minutes, extemporaneously, about the history of the region, and the emnity between the tribes there. Now, let's look at Monkey Boy. I cannot honestly seee how ANYONE with a brain can think that George W. Bush is in any way, shape or form "presidential." Perhaps he could be "president" of his cheerleading squad, but really, is he actually our president? ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!! BTW, I like Edwards. He's be great on the stump as VP.

17. Sorry to ruin the party! But he really brings very little expertise

to the ticket. Yes, he is very nice and optimistic person...but we need much more than that to run this country.. Remember he is a heartbeat away from the presidency. He just doesn't have the know- how and I CANNOT see him as commander-in-chief. That's why we need Clark. People who have congressional experience are a dime a dozed...but people with military experience are few and far between.

Sorry Anti-Bush, while I like Clark I think Edwards is a much better VP candidate. I think he brings more to the ticket than just one thing. And besides, Kerry already has military experience.

I am one of those voters who does not happen to think only military guys can be commander in chief. If that were the case we would eliminate a lot of very talented people. FDR did a pretty good job as commander in chief and he didn't have military experience. I guess I would have to suggest that General Clark has no domestic policy experience which is also important in a candidate. He might have a difficult time presiding over the senate without knowing the ins and outs.
