I NEVER thought I'd see anti-Muslim bigotry on DU, but we've apparently hit a new low.
It's bad enough that sexism and racism toward blacks has been rampant in recent months, but when someone has the gall to post anti-Muslim garbage on these forums, we stoop to a new, disgusting low.
The current climate in our country is paranoid and antagonistic toward Islam in general. For people to feed into it in order to support their candidate is DISGRACEFUL. The LAST thing we need right now is fanning the flames of paranoia and racism by posting right-wing crap like that.
For the record:
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS NOT A MUSLIM. THE NAME 'HUSSEIN' IS VERY COMMON IN THE MIDDLE EAST. DEAL WITH IT.
EVEN IF HE WERE MUSLIM, WHY WOULD THAT BE A BAD THING? I'M SICK TO DEATH OF THAT ATTITUDE, THAT CALLING HIM MUSLIM IS SOMEHOW A VIABLE ATTACK BECAUSE BEING A MUSLIM IS BAD.
Enough of this bigotry. DU is supposed to be better than that. Today, it's starting to look uncomfortably like Freepertown or, worse, Stormfront.

They keep outing themselves, and we'll keep rooting them out. It worked to get one out of here earlier, but there's a few more still rolling around. Maybe we can get them out of here before the night ends!

81. By no means all Muslims are anti-woman. "The Muslim Faith", however, arguably is.
It's an ambiguous phrase, but there are several possible interpretations ("The Muslim faith, as Mohammed probably intended it to be followed" and "The Muslim faith, as defined by averaging over the beliefs of all living Muslims" being the obvious two) that are clearly very anti-women indeed.

That said, there are certainly millions of liberal-extremist (not "moderate" in the obvious sense of the word - only the far left of the Muslim spectrum isn't very conservative by Western standards) Muslims who are not in any-way sexist or mysogynist, and Western Muslims are disproportionately likely to be so.

94. What you say is not true.
The Quran is no more sexist than the Bible. In fact, after having researched, I found out that early Muslim leaders actually mandated property and inheritance rights for women, when other religions and religious leaders did not. Moreover, things have to be put into context. When the limitation to four wives was mandated, it was actually a restriction upon the prevalent practice of having many wives (during ancient times).

Moreover, in every Muslim family that I know of, there is equality between the sexes. In fact, with respect to my good friends of twenty years, P and L, L is the assertive one who runs the money-making family business (not like the stereotype at all).

99. Anecdotal evidence? Spare me.
Unless you personally know a representative sample of the world's billion-plus Muslims, that's not relevant.

I don't agree that the Quran is no more sexist that the bible (although the bible is far from a model of unsexistness); you might have a stronger case if you argued that the Quran was no more sexist than the OT, but the NT contains specific instructions that the madder bits of the Levitical purity code no longer apply.

Also, that's only relevant to one of the two possible interpretations I discussed - there's no question that Islam as it is interpreted today is *immeasurably* more sexist on average than Christianity as it is interpreted today (although the "on average is, as always, crucial - as you point out, there are many Muslims who aren't sexist and many, many Christians who are).

I strongly disagree with the argument that these things have to be "put into context". If a religion claims that its teachings were dictated by an omniscient, timeless God, and those teachings don't come with a disclaimer "here and now", then they have to be assumed to be relevant for all times and places. Alternatively, if one wants to claim that those teachings were for then and there only, then we can say the same about the rest of the religion, and ignore it all.

101. Spare ME. "Interpretation" has nothing to do with it.
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 01:46 PM by Maat
Different people around the globe have interpreted religious texts differently, primarily to support their own agendas. That's politics. The fact is that no faith is inherently superior to another (or less sexist), and there are more progressive interpretations with respect to each (e.g. Sufism for the Muslim faith).

89. What's wrong is your filthy post
insinuating that Obama is a stealth Muslim. You are not stealth. We know what YOU are. And this thread was clearly "inspired" by your vile comment.

91. there's an important distinction to make
There's nothing wrong with being anti-Islam. Islam is just another flavor of religious belief -- you can't hurt its feelings.

Being anti-Muslim is a different story altogether. People deserve respect regardless of their religion.

95. Wow, you are ignorant
What a misinformed, generalist statement about Muslims in the US. I worked on Rep. Keith Ellison's campaign in MN, and we had TONS of Somali volunteers who were WONDERFUL people and treated everyone (including EACH OTHER - regardless of sex or socio-economic status) with dignity and respect. Minneapolis has one of the highest Somali concentrations in the US, and they are truly wonderul people and big contributors to our local economy.

I should know.

I had people jumping my case for calling out Skinner yesterday.

64. Every few months some assclown posts a thread
saying that "as progressives" we must stand against Islamofascism--or some such shit. I thought they were all freeper trolls but apparently the bigotry runs deep even in the better party. Sad, but not entirely surprising.

70. I'm really shocked at what I'm seeing coming from long time DU posters
Sure, we've had disagreements, raving rants at each other, but basically I respected them and thought our core believes were similar. Now I see just how far apart we truly are, and yet they somehow still call themselves Democrats. Sad, pathetic and disgusting, every single one.

77. This sentence..
It's bad enough that sexism and racism toward blacks has been rampant in recent months, but when someone has the gall to post anti-Muslim garbage on these forums, we stoop to a new, disgusting low.

This sentence seems to suggest that bigotry towards Islam is worse than bigotry towards sex and race. Do you believe this?

I don't notice a lot of rage over the anti-Christian posts and jabs I see here. Have you noticed this too?

79. I ran into a blatant, ugly example of such bigotry today,
but it wasn't here on DU. I just got home from work; haven't had time to spend on the 'puter, haven't read the news yet. I did check the ad I have at craigslist, though, and found this entry, which I promptly flagged:

WAKE UP AMERICA!! NO MUSLIM TERRORISTS FOR PRESIDENT!

REPENT AMERICA BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! SOON YOU WILL BE ALIENS IN YOUR OWN LAND IF YOU DO NOT CHANGE YOUR WAYS! GOD IS CALLING AMERICA TO REPENTANCE! STOP THIS MADNESS THAT IS ABOUT TO OVER TAKE US!THE LORD WANTS YOU TO CRY OUT TO HIM! DO NOT LET THIS MUSLIM WOLF POSING AS A SHEEP GET INTO OUR WHITEHOUSE! PRAY AGAINST IT!PLEASE POST THESE POSTS EVERYWHERE! TAKE A STAND!THANK YOU!

If you'd like to flag it as well, here's the link:

http://bend.craigslist.org/grd/603287048.html

I'm watching to see if it is removed promptly. I hope so. I don't like Obama. I don't like his platform. I don't plan to vote for him. None of those facts mean that I'll put up with any form of bigotry. :grr:

Sexism is at the top of the list. Not sure where you have been..but it has looked like freepertown for awhile...guess yer guy is starting to get slammed and it is uncomfortable for you.
I don't know about you...but my expectations here are pretty low at this point. Nothing shocks me.

As far as the Hussein thing?

Obama handled it all wrong. He should have EMBRACED his own middle name at every opportunity instead of running from it.
He MADE it a taboo subject which in effect...is ALSO anti-Muslim...only in a passive-aggressive way.

90. I agree.
This country is not ready for a black president. There are enough racist to prevent it. If Senator Clinton would've ran a better campaign this race would be over. But like I said that there are alot of white voters that won't vote for Barack because he's black. And now if Senator Clinton gets the nomination she's going to have a tough time getting a 9-1 vote that dems usually get and need to win the presidency so she has some serious work to do. And yes there has been way too many sexist comments not just on this message board but on my others and blogs. And alot of the sexism amazingly is coming from women that despise Senator Clinton. The majority of it comes from men but alot is xoming from women. I support Senator Obama and yes I wish Senator Clinton would've run a better campaign but I will not degrade her like others have and for those that support Seantor Clinton you should not degrade Senator Obama.
