Statement of candidacy?
Hi all,

I am a delegate to the state convention in June. (Texas)

I have read that in order to be a possible delegate to the national convention I need to file a "statement of candidacy" when the forms become available.

Can anyone tell me what the statement of candidacy entails exactly?

Also, I will be signing in to the state convention as a Kerry delegate, though I have singed in for Kucinich at the precinct and senate levels. I wanted to support Kucinich as much as possible, and there was a fair chance Kucinich could have gotten 15% at the senate convention. He came in 2nd, but still lacked 15%. So at this point I don't believe there is any reason not to support Kerry.

I don't know if my previous support of Kucinich would make me an "undesirable" (for lack of a better word) delegate though? I meet characteristics to be an at large delegate. (if the senate convention was any indication, I will be around a 5% minority) Anyway, if my previous support of Kucinich makes me undesired, would it be to a degree that filing a statement of candidacy would be a waste of time?

Sorry about the novice questions, but I have never been a delegate before - and the papers I have read on the subject have been somewhat confusing.

3. Hey! He was just asking for help!

This is pretty complicated stuff for a novice. He should get on the Texas Secretary of State's site go to the elections site and search for the form. Or better yet, as suggested, the Texas Dem site may have a more direct link. I do two Pacs so I know it's not as easy as you make it seem. Good luck to you and I hope you get to be a delegate. If you need more help, just ask. I'm helping someone else get through the myriad of rules, and anything I can do to help would be a pleasure.

6. In my own defense,
a simple google found the necessary site immediately. Nothing complicated.

I just went through the same thing here in Kansas and everything I needed to know was at the Kansas Democratic Party website. I didn't get elected as a delegate, and there's a distant chance I could become an at-large one (very distant) but I didn't need to do anything other than find the website and read it myself.

There are far too many of these kinds of questions here when a simple google search will find what's needed. I have little use for laziness.

8. As I said in my post

I have already read documents related to the matter. I have read every PDF on the matter on every Texas dem party site I could find. I don't understand them. What can I say? They are not in laymans terms. By the time I finish reading them I am more confused than when I started. I was not even aware exactly what a precint convention was until I was told about it when I went to vote.

I would have read the statement of candidacy form my self and answer the first part of my post if I could have. But, because I went and looked around, I discovered that form won't be available for many more days.

10. Howdy AGD4y2357y
Welcome to DU!

Where in Texas are you?

I'm going to the State Convention as a Dean Delegate for Kerry myself. Here's what our our state coordinator Glen Maxey told us:

There will be no official “Dean” delegates to the Democratic National Convention. John Kerry is the presumptive nominee. Howard Dean has endorsed him enthusiastically. In order for delegates to get to the National Convention, our group would have to have over 15% of the delegates sign in for Dean in June at the State Convention. Because of numerous factors, that will not be the case.

The leaders of the Dean, Kucinich, Edwards, and Clark campaigns met in Austin yesterday and had a conference call with the Texas desk of the Kerry national campaign.

We’ve agreed to the following concepts:
- All of us are agreed that we want a unified state convention for John Kerry in Texas. That will be achieved by all of us signing in for Kerry at State.
- Democrats who were in the campaigns of any of the nine candidates still would like to go to the National Convention and all should feel free to run for Kerry delegates or for the nine Edwards seats allocated by the primary. To do so, you will have to file an application as a Kerry or Edwards national delegate. Applications will be posted on the Texas Democratic Party website beginning late April.
- In all dealings at the State convention, no person will be prohibited or discouraged from being a party officer candidate or National Delegate because of which campaign they originally supported.
- The various campaign leaders will all have input on naming some of the At-Large delegates. There will be people who originally supported Dean (or the others) considered and elected by the Nominations Committee to be Kerry At-Large National Delegates.

I hope this helps.
