CNN weather:DANGEROUS ICE EVENT in Northern Ohio tomorrow
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 02:16 PM by underpants
Just now. The day time meteorologist (name?) said "I am making this call!"

Snow then ICE and lots of ice.

From Ashtabula to at least Sandusky-basically along Lake Erie

He forecast not only horrific travel problems but POWER LINES DOWN which later in the day, he said, could mean polling places without power.

Just a heads up.

1. Are the Ohio folks
pretty impervious to the weather, like their Iowan brethren? Of course with ice..... :scared:

Be safe everyone! Do what you can!

5. Ice is FAR worse than Snow
Snow a foot? Big deal...2-3 inches of solid ice, and it is bad bad bad

If this event moves even 20 miles South it will affect where I am, and what really SUCKS the most? It is 70 degrees here right this minute with strong winds.

7. I've lived through both --
but not nearly to the extent that some have, and ice is PARALYZING.

17. Tons of snow for the Cleveland area is no big deal because of lake effect snows
they get a ton anyway...ice, I agree, is completely paralyzing (great word for it)

25. One half inch of ice can induce paralysis. 2-3 inches would prove catastrophic.
There wouldn't be an upright tree or a functioning power line anywhere!

15. Cleveland has at least 2 universities, plus a large AA population. Toledo was hard
hit by NAFTA. Clinton country is Zanesville, the Appalachian side where people believe Obama is a Muslim.

So you're calling Appalachian people ignorant? It looks as if the only ignorant mouth around here belongs to you, snob.

22. Let's not be hasty. I saw a guy on TV saying he's leaning Obama but doesn't
like him being a Muslim and not swearing on the Holy Bible. He was from Zanesville. That is the basis of my statement. Nothing more. I did not call Appalachian people ignorant and I don't think they are, OK?

24. You made a broad brush statement...
.... based on an interview with one guy? And from that you wrote: "Clinton country is Zanesville, the Appalachian side where people believe Obama is a Muslim."

Why don't you just apologize for that remark rather than make excuses? You didn't aim your remark at ONE MAN.

Some of the comments I've read on his forum about about Appalachian people are repugnant.

31. Appalachian side? Some of my family is from Appalachia -- they're voting for Obama
My great-grandfather (who came from Appalachian people) helped run the Klan out of his town. My grandparents
strongly encouraged their daughter to play with children on the "black side" of Arkansas.

Appalachia was staunchly anti-slavery -- many of the people were descended FROM Scots-Irish slaves. There is a strong
pro-civil rights movement from the southern hill country.

6. Ice and darkness is a bad mix in Ohio...
People should encourage voters to get to the polls early in the morning, to avoid any accidents - or risk at nighttime.

19. I hope everyone in the affected areas is taking notice
I'm so glad a certain campaign has been e-mailing with a heads-up on my early voting location. I'm kind of clueless and hadn't seen the weather forecast for possible ice until this morning. So I duly went out and voted at my board of elections today. I thought there'd be a long line, but there were only one or two others there shortly before 1 p.m.

I had been thinking that, worst case scenario, I COULD have walked to my polling location tomorrow since it's only two blocks away, but my posterior still remembers the last time I tried to walk just a couple of blocks when we were having an ice storm. Even walking on the grass of the tree lawns was nearly impossible, it was that bad. Hopefully, the temperature will hit the right mark and not lead to a lot of icy roads. Freezing rain isn't so bad if it doesn't last long and there are a lot of cars on the road to melt it. Ice is another story! So anybody in northern Ohio that has time to vote TODAY and hasn't already voted should probably try to get to their early voting location and do so.

I guess flooding's just as bad as ice if it makes roads impassable. Good luck everybody and be safe!
