9. This has always been one of my favorites of his works.
I don't know why people still demean Rockwell as "just an illustrator." Every single thing in this painting is there for an artistic reason, just as much as in a painting by, say, Edward Hopper. And not just the obvious (the newspaper with the headline about bombings and death). But the details, like the fact that you can see the lit stairs beyond the kids' room...leading out into a world where there's happiness and light for them rather than gloom and death. The doll, which is lying abandoned on the floor rather than being in bed with the little girl...like a stand-in for all the dead children someplace else far away, that they, tonight, are not, because they live in a country that cares about keeping them safe.

As for that commercial...all I can say is, you know they're desperate when they start doing "kids picking daisies" ads.
