The Clinton Campaign's Pregnant Pause (When Asked What Foreign Policy Crisis Tested Hillary)

February 29, 2008
John Dickerson

Pregnant Pause

It was, in this reporter's opinion, the most interesting moment in today's Clinton campaign phoner with reporters.

Responding to the release of HRC's new TX TV ad, which asserts in no subtle terms that only she has the experience to deal with a major world crisis, and, relatedly, to keep your children safe, Slate's John Dickerson asked the obvious question:

"What foreign policy moment would you point to in Hillary's career where she's been tested by crisis?" he said.

Silence on the call. You could've knit a sweater in the time it took the usually verbose team of Mark Penn, Howard Wolfson and Lee Feinstein, Clinton's national security director, to find a cogent answer. And what they came up with was weak -- that she's been endorsed by many high ranking members of the uniformed military.
Take a listen ...

2. this was just as true in Iowa when she had an ad very similar to Biden's
(his was first) about steady hand and all that. And her "time to pick a president" tour sounding just like his tagline "time to choose a president".

How she got away with the "experience" credential over Biden, Dodd, and Richardson is beyond me.

22. notice how the GOP went with the experience guy even though
they didn't seem to like him before? and they narrowed that down AFTER we narrowed it down to the 3 least experienced candidates. Some of the GOP are stupid but some of them are clever strategists.

Big sigh, and still not over it myself.

27. this was about foreign policy specifically and I'd say no
Neither one of them has credible foreign policy experience IMHO. He's got a degree in international relations and she had tea with some world leaders and their wives 10-15 years ago. OK, they both know more than that, but when I watch Kerry and Biden and Feingold on SFRC and think about these two I get annoyed.

16. Her so-called experience is a myth. She is relatively inexperienced compared to many
of our other dem candidates, not to mention McCain. She has never been an executive. And the only large projects she has ever managed on a national scale, the healthcare plan in the early 90's and this campaign, have both been very poorly managed failures.

But she's never been able to come up with an effective response, unfortunately.

29. Here's the transcript from the CNN Texas debate:
CAMPBELL BROWN (CNN): We have time for just one final question, and we thought we would sort of end on a more philosophical question. You've both spent a lot of time talking about leadership, about who's ready and who has the right judgment to lead if elected president.

A leader's judgment is most tested at times of crisis. I'm wondering if both of you will describe what was the moment that tested you the most, that moment of crisis.

<snip>

BROWN: Senator Clinton?

CLINTON: Well, I think everybody here knows I've lived through some crises and some challenging moments in my life. And...

(APPLAUSE)

And I am grateful for the support and the prayers of countless Americans.

But people often ask me, "How do you do it?" You know, "How do you keep going?" And I just have to shake my head in wonderment, because with all of the challenges that I've had, they are nothing compared to what I see happening in the lives of Americans every single day. along with Senator McCain, as the only two elected officials, to speak at the opening at the Intrepid Center at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, a center designed to take care of and provide rehabilitation for our brave young men and women who have been injured in war.

33. That's not just an "oh snap!" moment....
it's a scary, telling moment. If the people who are supposed to be representing her can't answer this question without even thinking about it, how the hell are we supposed to have trust in her? She says she has experience... okay, did she and her people think that noone was ever going to call her on it?? This is very scary to me. Tell us the truth. What have you really done and accomplished. This goes for both of them, not just Hillary. Rhetoric and empty sayings are going to get us nowhere.
