I can't believe what I've read today
or who I've read it from. I'm not going to repeat it, it's been repeated enough. But my faith in this place becoming home again after the primaries are over is gone.

People I truly, truly respected and deeply admired have shocked the hell out of me. For what? What?? Because you hate Hillary Clinton as much as the freepers do?? WHY? Why has it come to this?

Jesus, I know this post is incoherent, but I'm in tears reading this site today. I'm going to have to take a time out. :(

(FYI: This has nothing to do with my thread about sexism. That one mostly made me proud of DU. Then I logged on this morning.)

112. I know the feeling too ~ I'm supporting Obama and have
been shocked by the vile things that have been said about him and his "cult" supporters.

The last time I checked I voted for Bill Clinton and Kerry and Gore.

I was shocked to learn that I was a cult and many other names that are hurtful.

And think about what Clinton has done with her desperate tactics.

If they are completely in denial then I suggest you don't come back till 2009. By then DU will go back into some kind of normal mode.

44. I watched Democracy Now! yesterday
and Jeremy Skahill was on....BO likes Blackwater and has no plans of getting rid of mercenaries.

DUers need to stop being so gullible and thinking that just by 'hoping,' this country is going to improve.

We are facing a financial collapse that is going to be the likes of nothing seen before. His ambition alone cannot deal with this. And don't tell me he hasn't made a deal with The Corporation....he wouldn't be touted on MSM if he hadn't...look what happened to Edwards!

The last continent to rape is Africa...lots of minerals and oil. He'll charm them as well.

7. It's out of control.
My boyfriend saw a bumper sticker yesterday that called Hillary the "b" word. After Edwards dropped out, I realized that I LIKED Hillary. So I switched my support and suddenly saw a side of DU that I didn't know existed. I don't get it either, but I have seen so many condescending, snarky, mean-spirited, gloating, boastful, and spiteful posts here even today - even today, after the rules have been changed, there's been a lot of debate, there have been some decent posts and apologies from the good Obama supporters - that I can't believe it.

Hillary is tough and has worked hard her whole life. She's been through more than most of us can even imagine. The level of hate directed at her is ridiculous. I guess you have to consider the source. People who have that much hate to direct at others are clearly filled with rage.

25. It's thrown me for a loop, too. It needs to be discussed, badly.
There are many funny, sharp, intelligent women who post here and it seemed that women had at least some level of parity here.

Sadly, that's not the case, unless one supports Sen. Obama, in the eyes of some of his supporters. However, as Mae West said,"A dame that knows the ropes won't get tied up", so I'm going to hang in and ignore the hate, as much as possible, and, at least here on DU, alert liberally.

Tough morning, I'm headed back to my real life. :-)

93. there's always been hate here for the BFEE and the RWNM
as Hillary represents the DLC and the corporate wing of the party, it's kinda natural for it to be transferred to her. She's simply to the right of many people on this board who feel that Obama is to her left and also does not have the track record of betrayal that Hillary and Bill do - IWR, Kyl-Lieberman, bankruptcy bill, NAFTA, telecom deregulation, welfare reform, the Era of Big Government is over, etc., etc., etc., etc.

38. Your obsessive blind hatred is stunning.

People like you, who are so 'fixed in place' that they can't accept, or respect, that people can have different opinions and/or perspectives that are just as well thought out, and just as legitimate as their own, have lost any claim on credibility.

There are people here who routinely post with such vitriolic hatred, toward one candidate or the other, that I wonder how they move through their days embracing all that poison within them. I can only imagine they must be a misery for those around them.

126. I already see a post
where you are using the "Hillary hater" meme which seems exactly like the "Bush hater" meme. I did not say that you were a Repuke, nor that Hillary was Bush. I said you were buying a Republican meme. Hillary haters, like Bush haters, have reasons for their hate, and it does not make them completely suspect. A lie does not suddenly become the truth just because the person calling it a lie "hates" the person telling the lie.

I'll be watching the downfall of the United States from Canada because I honestly think this election is our last chance to get our country back. There will be no reason to stick around "just in case" we win in 2012. If we can't get past our petty differences, we probably deserve what we get.

56. So let's look at what those 'shared values' are:
1. Haven't we learned that what the MSM is touting is what the EWEs want (Extremely Wealthy Elites). They basically do as the Repugnants want since the Media is 80% owned by 5 ugly, rich, white guys....who like the joke: 'What's the difference between a street walker and my wife? Nothing...they're both women.' MSM is reinforcing the patriarchy and hatred of women...and insecure men love that theme.

2. Separation of Church and State...BO's speech in S. Carolina and a light coming down and an ephinany occurs saying 'I must vote for BO)...creepy? His church's website? I thought DUers liked separation.

3. Corporate Control and Rule of US and world. If Blackwater is acceptable to BO, then I can't think of a Corporation worse to uphold. The Corporation (Daddy) has give BO The Best Marketing Plan Ever...it has developed for him a brilliant plan after it was trended, demographied, group tested, and propagandized. I am aghast at the gullibility of DUers. 'Yes we can.' Change! Hell, change is the only constant is this fucking world. It's so simple minded and people are lapping it up.

4. Dislike of Reagan

5. Pro-Choice....he votes 'present.'

6. Ageism is not good. You, too, will get old someday....well, maybe.

I'm sure others can add to the 'shared values.'

Though some of the acute mean spiritedness on both sides has been really sad.

I just feel everybody is wayyyyyyyy beyond frustrated.

People often say it's so much worse than '04 but we had a nominee so much quicker last time.

49. Most Obama supporters do hot "hate" Clinton.
It seems that a lot of Clinton supporters assume that just because someone advocates for Obama then they must hate Clinton. But that's just not true. For instance, I respect Senator Clinton and if she somehow got the nomination I would support her in the general. It's just that for a variety of reasons I believe that Obama is best for this country right now. But that doesn't mean at all that I hate Clinton. And that applies to most Obama supporters I suspect.

Of course there will always be a very small hateful minority, and neither side has a monopoly on that. But intense support for your candidate does not mean that you hate the other one.

Remember that this hate Clinton mantra was concocted by the right wing media to try to divide we progressives into two camps and therefore weaken us. But we can't let that happen.

and I'm not convinced of the same out in the real world either - the conversations I've had in the real world with Obama supporters often mirror the one's I've had in DU - where Hillary Clinton's percieved failings are more often than not the main reason for supporting Obama.

I've been on this board for six years, I've supported HRC since before she announced, and I've never seen anything like the level of vitriol she recieves...

I can sypathize with the OP also regarding posters that I've had some level of respect for over the years - things have been said that will be damn hard to overlook once this is over.

52. Nobody on our side HATES her. Get over that bullshit.
However, there are a great many people who do not support her, do not want another 8 years of the Clinton/Bush family parade, and resent the arrogance that leads a person with negatives over 50% (i.e. not electable under any plausible scenario) to destroy our best opportunity for progressive change since Reagan got elected.

I know some conversations here have been tense and if you received unkind words that sounded like hate, I certainly regret that.

58. I'm undoubtedly part of the problem
I don't agree with much of what Clinton espouses. I don't trust her. I am appalled by her record on the invasion and occupation of Iraq and even more by her doubletalk on her record since she started running for President. I do not like her record on protecting our civil liberties from the attacks of recent years. I abhor her pro-corporate, anti-worker positions. She has danced and hemmed and hawed and dissembled and triangulated so consistently that I just do not believe her anymore. I think she is a professional politician first, foremost and always. I think she has run a terrible campaign through arrogance, lack of leadership and crony incompetence. I certainly don't hate her. She's better than McCain or any other repuke. But she's not the champion of Democratic ideals I once hoped she'd be. Quite the contrary.

BUT I AM OUTRAGED that I am called "sexist"--repeatedly!--because I don't support Clinton.

I am not really a fan of Obama either, but at least when I criticize him I'm not descended upon by a pack of ravenous Obama wolves shouting "racist!"

I deeply regret the rancor between the two camps that has characterized this site and GD-P in particular. I wish I'd done more to help.

76. Ah, so its actually just ONE thread.
I see.

The second thread, crying about the first thread, saying how its still unlocked -- turns out both threads were locked with roughly the same amount of responses. It takes the mods some time, they are working overtime this year.

And, ironically, the first thread has nothing to do with gender, and everything to do with making a reference to a horrific chapter of racial history that is in terrible taste.

And the third one is about someone throwing a hissy fit and leaving the board. Hmm... not seeing a lot of examples of sexism, but I am seeing alot of examples of people who need to grow up.

I KNOW there are sexists and sexism on this board, and in society, and we should call it out when we see it. BUT I ALSO KNOW that at this point, a group of fanatical candidate supporters are so full of confirmation bias that they literally invent sexism to see everywhere they look.

And that's a shame - because the ridiculous "see what you want to see" mentality of some totally obscures genuine sexist posting when it occurs. Because there are so many ridiculous cries of sexism (and racism I might add) it has had the effect of hurting the real identification of truly sexist and racist occurrences.

It's a shame.

110. Actually ...
your words:

"The second thread, crying about the first thread, saying how its still unlocked -- turns out both threads were locked with roughly the same amount of responses. It takes the mods some time, they are working overtime this year."

However, that poster decried BOTH threads as being awful and deserving of action by the mods.

The Michelle Obama one was alerted on and LOCKED WITHIN 90 MINUTES. It also only received 3 recs because it was so distasteful.

The thread likening the Clinton campaign to a lynching TOOK 4 DAYS TO GET LOCKED, received 29 recs, and made it to the Greatest Page.

Can you rationalize that?

your words, again:

"And, ironically, the first thread has nothing to do with gender, and everything to do with making a reference to a horrific chapter of racial history that is in terrible taste."

There is no complaint, put forth in the OP, that is gender-based ... no charge of sexism.

So, who was it who displayed a "ridiculous 'see what you want to see' mentality"?

It's a shame.

117. How about this rationalization. The second thread called out the mods and was thus a clear case...
of violating the rules.

The second thread was only locked because it became a flamefest. Arguably no rule was broken by its OP, it was the angry responses that got the thread locked. Notice that it was NOT called flame bait in the locking post.

We are viewing them individually as candidates nothing more. Now a few male smucks have come on trolling but they are not genuine progressives at all. 120. Imagine yourself in the shoes of a Black Muslim woman...
regardless of whatever candidate is supported or not, whether you even back any candidate and participate in politics, at all, if you're watching MSM news on tv this week, you are going to feel slightly intimidated and rightly insulted by the antics in this presidential campaign. If you do happen to be involved in politics and have seen and heard every little poke and read every single slight, including the "terra" meme that's being publicized today, and if you have the capacity to put two and two together, it might even make you mad.

Just as your topic on blatant sexism was appropriate, considering the demeaning tactics that have been used attacking women, I'd say you might need to walk in someone else's shoes for a bit, to understand the feelings that may be expressed here concerning other tactics of racism, bigotry, and fear-mongering. You might not feel that it's real or fair, but simply try to see it from another side, that's all.

129. I would respond the same way to racism as to sexism
What I saw this morning went way beyond criticism of campaign tactics or someone pointing out racism. If I ever see such appalling ugliness directed at Obama and his supporters, I will be equally saddened and disgusted.

121. I cannot believe it either.
Goodbye and find a real home. DU is just a website.

130. Maybe you're taking the primaries a wee bit too seriously? It's politics...
I get offended and tired of the same caustic posts. Some of them are really offensive.

But the primaries will go on, regardless. The nominee will be picked, no matter how much you anguish over posts in a forum, or not. And your posts, and others, will probably have no effect on the outcome.

All we can do is try to be sane, vote our conscience, and let the voters have their say at the polls.

I would add that...as an Obama supporter, it seems to me that the most egregious posts are those against Obama, not against Clinton. It is possible that we are offended most, and notice most, those against the one we support.

131. I realize that I should not have posted this since I have no desire to rehash what prompted it
But those who don't get my post don't need to get it. DU is a community, and some of us form attachments to the three-dimensional human beings behind these posts, even it's just a sense of camaraderie and respect. If people want to call me a loser for caring about DUers, that's their prerogative. But those who are pretending this was a "threatening to leave" tantrum and telling me to "get the fuck off of DU" can go Cheney themselves.

To those who have expressed their support, thank you; I truly appreciate it. It's this shared experience that makes DU great when it's great. But please stop recommending this thread. It doesn't belong on the Greatest Page.

134. We don't hate Hillary, just some of her tactics. BE FAIR !!
I'll say it again. Hillary is a very smart, experienced, and capable politician who would be better than an R. If she were to win the nomination, I may have to hold my nose a bit, but I'd work for her and vote for her. But it's the TACTICS people don't like, and BE FAIR. PLENTY of Hillary supporters on this site have attacked Obama just as badly. Again, BE FAIR.
