Bush wouldn't crack a joke like that....
....if he didn't know they already had found weapons of mass destruction and are going to spring it on us during some october surprise moment. No way would Bush be so relaxed and nonchalant about it. Obviously it is NOT something you joke about, and no way Rove allows this to slip out unless he knows they have WMD and is just planning a massive media offensive in the near future.

beware the unseen hand

1. Nah
You give the Bush White House too much credit. They're just a bunch of amateurs. The White House Press Correspondents Dinner is an annual event, and Presidents always make silly jokes. This one was just stupid.

3. "They're just a bunch of amateurs."
Like hell they are. Underestimate your enemy at your own peril.

6. No, they are too
Rove is an overrated hack. Rice is an idiot who can't manage anything, and when she tries, manages invariably to embarass herself. Card's pretty effective but he isn't given the power he needs. Cheney's by far the smartest of the bunch, but he can't do everything. I can go on. The Bush people are almost without exception total clowns. They keep trying to commit political suicide. We need to let them!

10. Anyway, what do you mean your "enemy"
I thought you were opposing John Kerry? Isn't he your enemy?

13. um, no.
Try reading, if only once in a great while. While I have no illusions that a Kerry presidency will usher in some liberal renaissance, and while I recognise that progressives will have to keep fighting the same battles as now no matter who is elected, I'm voting for Kerry in November.

4. I agree. I think they were blindsided by this one
I think they were trying to blunt the hard edge of being caught with their pants down for not finding WMD's, and it backfired.

14. Iran press has said they are importing them
and that they are weapons seized in the past from Russia and old Eastern bloc countries.

I believe that Rumsfeld and Cheney would attempt it and that discovery will be planned for late in the campaign so that there is no time to investigate and raise questions. Halliburton certainly would be able to accomplish it.

I think they will be chemical weapons rather than nuclear of course.

I believe they will do just about anything because if they have done anything criminal they can't let a new administration come into office and investigate.

Rumsfeld has never acknowledged that WMD won't be found. I believe Cheney has also left open the possibility.

These are guys with immense power now, who may be facing indictments for what they have done. They have consistently talked about the importance of using power. Rumsfeld has told us he will lie to us.

If they think it will help them they will plant them.

The way to defuse it is to have credible people with media access talk about it ahead of time.

15. It's faar too late for that, even if there were WMDs. (There weren't)

The folks in the White House lack an understanding of the world. They live in a fantasy world of their own propaganda.
