"Vanessa Checking in From New Hampshire
Nashua, NH
Finally at a computer again. I am sitting in the Nashua, NH office watching Dad get interviewed by NH public TV. We spent the morning at Hopkinton High School talking about energy independence, the environment, and sustainable growth. It is astounding to me that any environmentally concerned American would back anyone but my Dad. His record speaks for itself; he’s got the highest lifetime rating of any of the candidates from the League of Conservation Voters. He spoke eloquently about how we need to think big again. He pointed out that when we think outside the box, there is nothing we can't achieve. Our future depends on it.
We spent last weekend in Iowa. We started in Davenport. I woke Dad up in the am and gave him the news about the capture of Saddam Hussein. FOX News in Davenport was shocked and amused at trying to handle all the requests for interviews from other networks.
We spent the rest of the weekend on a solid bus trip to several cities in the state. Dad was on fire at his final stop on Sunday night. People were spilling up the stairs and on the floor to find space. He spoke to the point and with emotion about the importance of this election. We talked about the Supreme Court, the environment, and controlling the special interests in DC.
Most importantly, we talked about the issue of Iraq and the vote a year ago. I watched people listen to Dad explain the difficulty of the vote and his efforts to prevent Bush from going to war in the way he went to war. I listened as people whispered that they now understood his vote and why. I watched people comment on feeling relieved by his response and decision to now support him. This cannot be a one-issue election but I understand the worry about the war. I think as people hear out his thought process and course of action, they respect his decision. Add that with the rest of his record and the support cards have been coming in.
We are fired up and in my family, adversity makes us work harder. Tomorrow I’ll be in NH with my stepbrother Chris Heinz. Watch out NH high schools, we are a frightening duo! And keep an eye out for Teresa too. She is an incredible force on the trail and people are loving her.
