I'm a cynic
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 08:28 PM by AbbyR
A friend and I were discussing the Democratic primaries last night, and got ahead of ourselves to the election. Both of us are tremendously cynical, and I'm not sure the party isn't shooting itself in the foot yet again. (In the interest of full disclosure, I was one of the Al Gore hopefuls, and I still like Dennis Kucinich. My friend has been a Hillary guy from the start.)
We are both very nervous about the upcoming election, because we have no confidence in the intelligence of the American general public. How does DU feel about this: We are both nervous that Americans will not vote for a woman or a black man, particularly not a black man with a Middle Eastern-sounding name.
Let me jump in quickly and say that I will vote for either or both of them, gladly and happily, though at the moment, I'm probably leaning toward Clinton. But I'm just really nervous that our horribly polarized country won't vote for either of our top candidates.
Am I concerned over nothing? I sure hope so, because we need another Republican about as much as I need to spend the evening at a party with Karl Rove.
Any thoughts? Tell me that we are both worrying over nothing. Actually, I think a Clinton/Obama ticket, with either one of them in the top slot, would be fine.
But I still wish Gore had run....

1. I think you're underestimating the voters
I think we've made more progress than you realize.

4. I hope you're right
I do live in the south, which could give me a skewed picture of the rest of the country.

2. I think the Dems will win... period!
I agree with all you wrote and have had some of the same fears

But this is SOP in the USA! :P

"we have no confidence in the intelligence of the American general public"

I never have!!

I think, looking at the Dem voter overwhelming turnout numbers in the primaries, that the Dems will win hands down.

But the waiting is excruciating and i think we need a new law to not allow presidential candidates to campaign for two years!!

I've had enough of this and it's now getting to be way to long!

3. I think the power of what we choose to think about should NEVER be underestimated
in other words, why not choose to focus on what we WANT to see happen in the election, rather than on what we DON'T want?

just sayin'.

5. Don't forget " the American general public " thought the war in
Iraq would be a good thing. The blood is on our hands. Peace be with us all.

7. I think the majority of American voters are ....
....extremely ignorant. After electing Bush twice (ok, so it was probably stolen the first time, but it was a close race)......they can and will do anything. I take nothing for granted.

8. I think both can, and will, win.
Of course, I thought the Pats would win the Super Bowl.

9. Well lets just say if we look at the last election
If we put people in general categories
23% would vote for a mass murderer if he had an R
That leaves 26% of 49% who voted for R twice.
that 26% is the not so smart people in the U.S.
Half will automatically get duped again no matter what happens, that leaves 13%
1/3 of those will vote the wrong way. That leaves about 9%
That leaves 60%. race or gender followers overwhelmingly make up the first group.
And I never counted the massive primary turnout in my figures.
In summery the Democrat will win by 60%+ no matter if she is a woman or he is black.
