Hey everybody! You might have seen my note/update in CTLiberal's diary concerning your "ticket" to get into the Precinct Convention (the official name for Texas' caucuses). I wanted to write a separate diary about what to do if you want to vote early AND caucus on Election Day.

EARLY VOTING IN TX STARTS TOMORROW! YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW THIS STUFF!

Also, I want to give a quick primer on the stuff that you will need to vote.

NOTE: The information regarding pieces of Identification needed to vote may vary from county to county.

DISCLAIMER: I work for an Elections department in Central Texas.

IDENTIFICATION

In my county, a Voter Registration Certificate is obviously preferable. Make sure that it is stamped with a "DEMOCRATIC" stamp.

Otherwise, In order to be processed and allowed to vote, you can use any form of government-issued ID, such as a

Driver's license

Military ID

Passport/Other citizenship documents

Student ID

Social Security Card

Any ID that shows a Photograph of you

EVEN A UTILITY BILL OR OFFICIAL MAIL!!!! MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THIS!!

These documents will likely suffice for voting.

GOING TO THE CAUCUS/GETTING THAT CRUCIAL PARTY STAMP

Now please listen/read carefully.

YOU MUST CAUCUS IN YOUR OWN PRECINCT. Hence "Precinct Convention".

1. Most election clerks will know to ask which primary you prefer to vote in, since it will determine which ballot you get (if it's electronic). However, if THEY DO NOT STAMP your Voter Registration Certificate, MAKE SURE THAT THEY DO. A STAMPED VOTER REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE IS A VALID ENTRY TICKET INTO THE PRECINCT CONVENTION.

2. If you have a Driver's License or anything other than a Voter Registration Certificate, MAKE SURE THAT THE CLERK FILLS OUT A PARTY AFFILIATION CERTIFICATE THAT IS STAMPED DEMOCRATIC.

3. HOLD ONTO THIS CERTIFICATE AS EFFECTIVELY AS YOU CAN. THAT CARD IS YOUR ENTRY TICKET INTO THE CAUCUS. I have NO IDEA how you can get in without it, especially if you early vote. Most early voting does not take place in a person's precinct. Just be aware of this.

4. ON ELECTION DAY, go to your precinct. At the Early Voting location, they will tell you where your precinct is. Even better, if you have a Voter Registration Certificate, it will list your 3 digit precinct on the card itself.

5. Be PROUD that you mastered this bizarre clusterf*** of an election system.
Thanks everybody! If we stay attentive to what we need to do to fully participate in the Texas Primary and Caucus, it will be fantastic!

UPDATE 3: KTinTX points out:

You don't have to have the card (2+ / 0-)
Each precinct will have a physical roll of all of that precincts' voters. On election day, it come pre-printed with everyone who voted early. Throughout the day, they stamp those that vote on election day at that precinct in the book. This book (there are two, one to leave, one to take back to the county) will be available for whomever runs the precinct caucus. The reason it is kept, is to verify that the person voted and to look up the voter registration number which needs to be written down on the sign in sheet.

24. thanks for this info. It was confusing about whether early voters

needed to go back to their own precinct to caucus or to the early voting precinct to caucus. The local people were saying that it was important that we had at least 15 Obama people at each caucus site for viability. But the national campaign didn't act like this was important.

6. OK That's definitely one vote for Obama in Pct. 274 in Houston

When you go in to any early voting location, they get your voter registration certificate and look you up on the computer (I saw another person doing it with justa driver's license. They then ask you which party's ballot you want. THEN THEY ASK IF YOU WANT A FORM SHOWING YOU VOTED OR A STAMP ON YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION CARD. I had them stamp my card (One less piece of paper to carry around).

Then I went outside and got interviewed on local news. Let them know that Sen. Obama was my choice. Houston is going to surprise.

I see no difference between the candidates. I'll either go with the devil I know or vote for Edwards to register a protest vote to the party.

28. I really hate that you feel that way. It is just that some of us were

so intensely against her from the start. Her negatives were so high - it just seemed stupid to pick someone who was starting below zero. And it's just that intuitive second sense that there is something dishonest about her. No, nothing concrete - just that feeling in your gut that someone wasn't believable. And a thirst for someone transparent.

But, what did it for me was that mysterious win in NH when she came up with 31,000 unpolled voters. No one knew about them - not Barack (who got what he thought he'd get), nor her own internals, nor five scientific polls. Plus precinct reports that there were a lot of cars with out-of-town license plates near the polls. The kicker was that all these unpolled 31k ALL voted for Clinton and also had to have lied to the exit pollsters since MNBC's exit polls showed numbers without the 31k. No, I have not one iota of proof - but all of this defies the laws of probability -especially in what was termed a "do or die" primary - next to her home state. Think it just brought back bad memories of Bush's fuzzy poll math in FL in 04. And now the mysteriously Harlem results - just so happens to be in Bill's office neighborhood....No, no proof - but just the fact that you have to wonder - that you don't automatically say - I know in my heart that that person would never do such a thing, ever.

But, after Edwards dropped out, I really listened to Obama. For the first time in many, many years of hating Bush - all that was lifted and it felt like we could finally get past it all and start doing something. To me, it may not be her fault, but Clinton is a part of that them vs us mentality.

So, I for one apoligize. I think we just feel so strongly we try too hard to make everyone think the same way.

It was amazing. Sure folks got a little restless, but no one left (except a few school-age kiddos). The energy was great. The best thing about it was how big the boat was. There were men in suits (like me), kids, seniors, homemakers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, union craftsmen and craftswomen, janitors. You get the point. All socioeconomic levels, races, etc.

I am now going on the record -- and hold me to this: Obama will win the popular vote in Texas, and do even better on the delgate count. I'm certainly not intending to rest on my backside and "watch it unfold." I am training caucus-goers at least every other day. My wife is an Obama precinct chair. And we live in redder than red West Houston.

The time is now. Let's create history.
