Republicans are donating to Kerry's campaign
I just spoke to my father who's a registered Republican.

he said that after reading about Kerry's financial problems he felt sorry for the guy & sent him a check for $5.

I'm sure he's not alone.

4. Next up, he needs the endorsements of
Karl Rove, Bill Safire, Tucker Carlson, Robert Novak, et al, and about 6 months of suitably fawning coverage from the media, and he'll have a juggernaut of his very own! I think he has a ways to go in catching up to Dean in Republican donations, though.

A few hundred thousand would be chump change.

Out of all current presidential candidates, only one actually was openly supported by Repukes, had a repuke-based organization backing him up, and raising campaign donations for him:

Some Republicans back Dean
By TRACY SCHMALER Vermont Press Bureau

"...One of those issues was Act 60, a law that many Republicans have opposed. Several times during the news conference, the Republicans said they disagreed with some of Dean's policies but reiterated their support for his fiscal conservatism.

Even Dean acknowledged that his fiscal policy was the common ground he shared with the nine men and two women at the table, most of whom admitted to voting for Dean in the last election.

The group, known as "Republicans for Dean" represents the first organized GOP endorsement for Dean in any of his five campaigns.

...He said the committee would support Dean's candidacy by reaching out to other moderates in the party as well as helping Dean with fund-raising."

9. looks like my dad's $5 is gonna come in handy…
Sources said Kerry was close to running out of money to finance his campaign. After getting off to a fast start, raising more than $7 million in the first quarter of 2003, sources said he is likely to raise between $1 million and $2 million in the final three months of the year, just when demands for travel, staff and television advertising are escalating rapidly.

10. It must hurt
Kerry must hurt with his wife having all that money he can't legally use. You really have to pity the guy because all he borrows HAS to be paid back.

12. Feeling "sorry" for Kerry is like feeling "sorry" for Paris Hilton
Kerry has money up the wazoo! He is the richest man in Congress, far richer than Senator Corzine.

I am sorry that pruner's dad sent his hard-earned working-class $5 to Kerry. Perhaps pruner's dad will get a refund...

Feeling "sorry" for Kerry's money troubles is like feeling "sorry" for Paris Hilton. Somehow the woes of the filthy rich do not register in my humble proletarian's heart.

14. I was talking with a fairly high-up Republican operative today
We're both working on a beachfront bikepath here and she's pretty chatty. Anyway, we started talking about the Democratic primary campaigns and she mentioned that there may be quite a bit of Repuke dollars funnelled to the Kerry campaign to make sure he blocks Clark coming out of NH. She was a bit perturbed that he wasn't making a stand against Clark there because Clark may be tougher for Bush if he winds up as the anti-Dean.

15. Hey Hedda I have been hearing the same thing!
Some of the Kerry supporters in the Central Valley in CA are distressed that Clark's grassroots campaign is going to be the anti Dean force and not Kerry's.

19. Exactly- why give money to Kerry, he's down to banking his own campaign
You're right, it doesn't make sense- he's already having to dip into those Heinz funds just to keep up. Clark is really putting the whammy on him in NH, draining his resources.

20. maybe the republicans in your life
are attempting to bait you.

Your father knows you support Dean doesn't he?

What better way to discourage you than to let you know that he contributed (a paltry amount) to the Kerry campaign? $5 dollars won't go too far for Kerry's candidacy, seems to me that he is making a statement by donating to one of your candidates opponents. Bad republican dad, bad.

I think this sort of thing is going around.

BTW, what financial problems was he referring to? Kerry got the 850,000 mortgage, what's to worry about?

24. Dads really know how
to wind up their kids don't they? I guess its genetic but nobody can quite get under my skin like my Dad. I'm sure he doesn't even try to most of the time!

It is an interesting point regarding strategic donations and strategic support ('tactical voting' was displayed in the last British General Election when the Labour Party and Lib Dems often pooled support in certain key seats in order to oust (or keep out) the Tory candidate - almost certainly there was also more than a hint of that in the McCain support in 2000). I think people should be very careful with that sort of thing. Surely opponents don't really want to aid John Kerry. His track record suggests that Republicans would not wish to get that particular snowball rolling down the hill.
