Trippi accuses fellow Dem Candidates of Hiding Behind the Dean-Osama Ads
A direct quote from a Dean for America email from Trippi:
"And they've hidden behind faceless committees that use images of Osama bin Laden to attack our campaign."

I personally find this allegation shocking. All candidates, who have been accused of being behind the ads, have denied and decried the Dean-Osama ads. There has been no evidence presented that indicates either Kerry or Gephardt or their campaigns had anything to do with the ad. Trippi is either being as reckless with his words/allegations as his boss or he has new evidence.

~ snip ~
What's the definition of the establishment? They're people who've come to do things in the established way. Too many Democrats have lost the spirit to fight what's wrong. They voted for the war, and too many voted to give the President a second blank check in Iraq. They voted for his reckless tax cuts. And they've hidden behind faceless committees that use images of Osama bin Laden to attack our campaign.
~ snip ~

How can the Dean Campaign one day say they want a more civil campaign and then the next day make baseless accusations about Dean's opponents?

I can say I have never received as reckless as email as this from any of the other candidates.

3. here's the whole thing
Dear XXXX,

Today you will make history. Together, with your action, we will exceed $15 million by midnight tonight-- the most any Democratic campaign has ever raised in a single quarter.

But that's not the history you'll be making.

The history is that hundreds of thousands of Americans are coming together in common purpose to reclaim our values and our principles -- to remove an administration that misled us about the reasons we went to war - and to defeat a President who is mortgaging our future with tax cuts for his biggest contributors. The history is that thousands are taking part to change the established way of doing things in politics. And you made history with a single click of the mouse:

http://www.deanforamerica.com/contribute

What's the definition of the establishment? They're people who've come to do things in the established way. Too many Democrats have lost the spirit to fight what's wrong. They voted for the war, and too many voted to give the President a second blank check in Iraq. They voted for his reckless tax cuts. And they've hidden behind faceless committees that use images of Osama bin Laden to attack our campaign.

But you can send them a message that their vacant attacks are just that - vacant attacks. Those who rely on special interests to fund their campaigns or on committees to launch their attacks are doing things the old establishment way. But we are going to shatter that forever. What your contribution represents is a new and different way of doing things - a way to strengthen the Democratic Party by being the party of people. And we are doing that together:

http://www.deanforamerica.com/contribute

Today you will show the way to all the cynics and doubters who don't believe that millions of Americans can raise $200 million to match George Bush's special interest money. You have shown that it can be done by raising more than $40 million this year alone. You did that -- through hundreds of thousands of small donations. If you can contribute again, now is a critical time:

http://www.deanforamerica.com/contribute

Thank you for being part of the most determined Democratic campaign in history - the only campaign that has the strength to defeat George W. Bush. Together we are going to win the White House in 2004.

Joe Trippi
Campaign Manager
Dean for America

34. "They're after me, so contribute!!"
Don't you love the way Dean uses "I'm the victim" fear tactics to get his contributions up?

After each paragraph, "CONTRIBUTE."

And lumps ALL the candidates together. DK, AS, and CMB would NEVER be a part of this, on ethical grounds. And I can't see any of the others being so stupid.

IF HE HAS PROOF, HE NEEDS TO PRESENT IT. Otherwise, I don't believe it.

Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 09:45 AM by mouse7
(On edit: I heard that when the ad broke. I see that info is probably wrong now.)

I don't really have much use for CNN as a news source. It's good for news pictures sometimes. Little else. However, it is a "major news organization" and they did report it.

Seems to let Trippi off the hook.

54. NO
This has been reputed over and over again. It is the lowest thing imaginable that Trippi would pull this out again to dupe people who missed it when it was in the news. John Kerry himself said he wasn't involved and called for the ad to be taken off the air and said he doesn't support these kinds of 3rd person ads in any form anyway. Gephardt said he was not involved. This is slimy campaigning and there are people in this thread posting about it who full well know the truth.

"I wish they weren't running the ads," he said. "I'm sorry they're doing this, but there's nothing I can do about it. But I would call on them and any other 527s to reveal their donors in a timely manner."

But a spokesman for Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who has hammered Dean's opposition to the war since the weekend capture of fugitive Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, echoed its criticism while denouncing its tone.

"We agree with Joe Trippi that this ad is produced and presented in a way that is over the top," said Brian Hardwick, Lieberman's deputy campaign director.

As I understand the quote you posted- Lieberman is saying, I agree with what it says, but I'm saying it in a different way.

What does he mean, "I wish they weren't running the ads", is he trying to say he's unhappy with the attack ad having a blacklash effect of helping Dean?

if this is entirety of Leiberman's condemnation, it's at best tepid. He had to be questioned about it before he would comment? Sad.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/12/16/politics/main588924.shtml

Gephardt campaign press secretary Erik Smith tells CBS News that the campaign "has no involvement at all" with AJHPV, although they have pointed reporters to the group's Web site. On a conference call today, Gephardt told reporters, "I haven't seen the ads and I have no knowledge of who is doing this and why they're doing it. For my part, I wish they would reveal who is doing this through the organization. I led the fight for campaign finance reform and, as part of that, we put additional requirements on reporting from 527 organizations. If I wanted to run ads of this kind, I would run them."

AJHPV's new spokesman is former John Kerry press secretary Robert Gibbs, who left the Massachusetts senator's campaign when his boss, Jim Jordan, was fired. The Kerry camp also denies any connection with the 527 group. Both the Gephardt and Kerry campaigns have gone on the air with positive ads this week, leaving the Dean bashing to AJHPV.

31. Like I said, weak.
No one here decried anything. They denied involvement, and they wish the people behind it wereexposed, but neither of these constitutes decrying the act or demanding that the ads be stopped.

But how convenient for them that they now can take the high road in ads since someone else is doing their dirty work for them.

Unions rip attacks on Dean: Feighan's group pulls TV ads

Washington - As criticism from its donors mounts, a controversial political group led by former Democratic congressman Ed Feighan of Cleveland will end its attack-ad campaign aimed at Howard Dean, a front-runner in early Democratic presidential primary races.

The commercials attacking Dean don't mention Gephardt or any of the other Democrats also running for the nomination. But a number of people and organizations backing Americans for Jobs, including Feighan, its president, are Gephardt supporters.

I am wondering, if there had been an ad with your candidate's face super-imposed over that of bin Laden, what would your reaction be? Any different than now that it's been done to Dean?

I don't think any of our candidates should be compared to bin Laden or Hitler or any of the other boogie-men. Any that it is done to I fully support in finding out who is responsible and would happily voice my disapproval to whoever might be responsible. You seem to disagree with this view, am I correct?

49. the ad wasn't the problem
speaking out against it - when the primary actors related to the ad were previously in the employ of two campaigns - that is the problem. :eyes:

Sorta the obnoxious speaker has first amendment rights - but the person who calls that speaker on the content of the slurs is the one who gets attacked as being PC (as if the second has no first amendment rights.)

However, Dean isn't clean in terms of barbs towards other candidates - and I think that the reaction his campaign has when things like this ad that go FAR over the bounds (imo) - gets a bit of a huffy reaction by those who percieve their candidate to have been attacked (though not at the same visceral ugly level) by the Dean campaign. Just add that to state that I get where the reaction from diehard supporters of candidates is going from. Sadly I think sometimes some reactions are so conditioned that there is no longer consideration from situation to situation just all lumped together. Such is often the case when passions for particular candidates (seen it in all camps at DU) run so high... the skills of discernment often get temporarily less refined.

51. It is exactly the fact that Dean's campaign is willing to do this...

willing to stand up to attacks and call the attackers out into the light of day instead of simply being mute and wishing the attacks go away that I am supporting Dean more than ever.

What they've done is take this attack ad on Dean and respond in a way that the question is who is responsible for this piece of shit, and not talking about "can dean really fight osama" like the ad makers intended.

This attack ad on Dean is now the party fart and everybody is rushing to say it wasn't them. The Dean crew immediately called the ad for what it was and challenge the coward(s) behind it to come forward and take credit for it. So far they have not done so.

SO now the message from the ad is which cowardly dem put this shit out... the attack has been completely turned around. As the others have been so fond of saying, this is just a warm up for the real attacks that will come from Bush and his crew... so far Dean's the only one who has shown he can cut such attacks off at the knees and use them to his own advantage.

I bet everybody else running wishes they had Trippi on their team.

Oh by the way we're about to break another fund raising record... gotta go.

Trippi is pimping for more money. That's all.

The fact that the OBL ad actually proves a good point about how Dean is a weak candidate to run against Bush must hurt poor Joe Trippi's feelings. Yes, the ad was a little heavy-handed, but is actually more honest than the ads that Dean has run on fellow candidates.

Anyone who's got a pulse on what the voting electorate thinks knows that Dean is a weak candidate with zero national security or foreign policy experience. It's different now after 911. Don't give me the "Clinton wasn't or Bush wasn't" claptrap. It's a major issue that will continue to cripple the viability of Dean succeeding in the GE if he gets the nod.

The obvious is even more true when Dean supporters want Clark as the VP to hide their candidate's weakness.

56. You mention being civil.
I believe you have forgotten a few things, haven't you. I believe that is the day, the day of your post about the StopDean action, that my husband and I decided that we would not vote for Clark at all. Under any circumstances.

The Union people in Iowa who had contributed money to this group even got mad when they saw the ad. They contributed as Gephardt supporters. The ad was eventually pulled only after the negative publicity.

Your representation of your candidate has hurt him. A good person is gone from this site now. I find that hard to take.

Clark had nothing at all to do with that ad and you wouldn't vote for him based on bashing by a few strangers on the Internet? That's just bananas. You've obviously been on your computer way too long. Get a grip.

65. Not the ad.
I am not talking about the ad. I am talking about a movement, planned, orchestrated. However it is not supposed to be talked about here. The words "get a grip" imply that I am not rooted in reality. I don't like them. They do not pacify, they put one on the defensive instead.

59. How DARE you talk about reckless emails?
You have incredible nerve criticizing anyone, IMO.

How can you even show your face on DU, after your experience with your own reckless emails?

There is an old saying from India that translates as follows:

"The Earth can stand many things, but it can not long stand the weight of a hypocrite."

Please, I would love it if you encouraged me to explain exactly what the fuck I'm talking about. PLEASE push the subject.

62. I'll bite
what's the issue about reckless emails? who is sending them?

I don't find Trippi's email reckless, just another campaign pulling out the stops to get money. I do think "they" is vague and if Trippi knew who did the ad should name them by name instead of using "they".

60. Because it is an unwarranted attack
The Osama ad makes the race uncivil. It was designed and run to benefit certain candidates. To the extent that they do not reject it and receive benefit of it they are complicit in it's airing.

The faux innocence in your post is most astounding.

68. No, it's scary. Arrogant, dictatorial and untruthful.
And the media whores helped. One of the ugliest footnotes in this campaign - and not the way you think it.

64. Trippi NEVER acknowledged the campaigns who disavowed the ad when it first
came out. And now he's playing this card again to DEMAGOGUE the issue ONCE AGAIN. He really knows how to get his crowd frothing.

67. Which is why it was a mistake to disavow it in the first place. Bullies
are all the same. Max Cleland went for W's tax cut, the Patriot act, the works. Still given the OBL treatment. ONE DOESN'T NEGOTIATE WITH BULLIES. Every concession will only bring more aggression. The entire action of taking this off theair (internet) and tarring everyone with it was positively Rovian.
