11. The two candidates are fairly similar, and either would make a great nominee.
On the war, both would pull out all our combat troops, leaving troops in Iraq to guard our embassy, and troops in the region for counterterrorism operations. Neither candidate would have permanent bases in Iraq.

On the economy, both would repeal Bush's ridiculous tax cuts for the uberwealthy

On healthcare, both have a plan that greatly expands coverage, each with its merits, whether it's Clinton's mandate or Obama's plan that covers everyone through age 25 and removes insurance companies' ability to deny coverage due to preexisting conditions. Both will use these initial programs as a stepping stone toward complete universal healthcare.

On gay rights, both would repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell and propose civil-unions legislation.

All else being equal, it comes down to electability, and Obama stands a much better chance in the general than Hillary, especially against John McCain. I believe that Obama's proven ability to rake in independent and Republican crossover votes will chip away at McCain's strongest voting blocs (indies and moderate Republicans). I believe that McCain will deflate conservative voters, and that Obama will not reenergize them the way a Clinton nomination will. I believe that Obama's purer antiwar stance will contrast more readily against McCain's "keep'em there for a century" plan. I believe Obama stands a real chance of being able to unite the country around progressive ideals in a way that no one has been able to in my lifetime. And that's why people should vote for B.O.

17. Because those folks younger than the baby boomers
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 04:51 PM by housewolf
have a better opportunity to clean up the messes the baby boomers and their parents (the Greatest Generation) all played a hand in exacerbating. Those younger than baby boomers have energy, creativity, techno-savy and a greater stake in fixing the problems than the baby boomers and their parents have right now. Speaking as a baby boomer myself, I think those younger than we have more of what's needed to create real solutions today.

This may sound like ageism to some, and perhaps it is - but it really stems from the way in which I see Yuppie-ism as having contributed in a huge degree to the problems we have now.

21. Because Clinton has no antipoverty plan,
and millions of Americans will be severely impoverished in the next few years.

Because the words "affordable housing" don't appear on her website.

Because she says she wants to reduce the prison population by "reducing crime"... which means putting lots of people in prison.
