Nebraska Dem caucuses real time. Overwhelmed by turnout.

2:35 p.m.

No second guessing.

They were overwhelmed and sometimes outnumbered, but Douglas County Democrats say they are pleased.

Kris Pierce, with the Douglas County Democratic Party, says caucus captains did everything possible to make sure that no caucusgoer was turned away.

He also says when caucuses were first organized a year ago, few expected Nebraska to still be a player in the Democratic nomination battle. It wasn’t until the last two weeks that interest in the caucus began to accelerate at warp speed, said Pierce.

"The caucus we did today is a different caucus than we planned on in February, because we weren’t sure Nebraska was going to be in the game," said Pierce.

"We went from expecting 3,000 to being prepared for 27,000 within 10 days," Pierce added.

Here's more on turnout

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2835&u_sid=10254663

About 3,000 caucusgoers came to the high school, taxing officials who were trying to register and direct voters to the right part of the caucus.

For hours, cars stretched for about a half-mile down Highway 370, trying to enter the school's parking lots.

Eventually, organizers moved hundreds of caucus-goers to the school's gymnasium, leaving the rest crammed into a cafeteria. Caucusing was still ongoing by about 2:15 p.m.

The turnout at Omaha's Monroe Middle School was so heavy that participants simply cast paper ballots for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

Organizers had to move the caucus outside to a parking lot because of the long lines of people at the school, 51st Street and Bedford Avenue.

The school was one of 15 caucus sites in Douglas County. The Democratic Party said caucus attendance also was high at Westside High School, Norris Middle School and other locations.

Nearly 1,400 caucused at North High School, filling every seat and lining the walls and aisles at the school's auditorium. The school is situated in Omaha's heavily black north side.

"(DNC), people will come (DNC). They'll come to (PRIMARY EVENTS) for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up (at) your (PRIMARY EVENTS) not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your (PRIMARY EVENTS) as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's (FREE). They'll pass over the (CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS) without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the (VOTING BOOTHS); sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the (DEBATES), where they sat when they were children and cheered their (CANDIDATES). And they'll watch the (ELECTIONS) and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come (DNC). The one constant through all the years, (DNC), has been (DEMOCRACY). America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But (ELECTIONS) has marked the time. This (ELECTION), this (DEMOCRACY): it's a part of our past, (DNC). It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come (DNC). People will most definitely come."

8.  I read a couple thousand Republicans went just to vote for Obama
So is it their love of him that is causing this or their hatred of Clinton?

11. Or under the belief he'd be the weaker candidate. I think they would
be wrong. Both Hillary and Barak would be very formidable candidates.

Both are incredible debaters. McCain had better be well rested if and when he meets up with them. Both are hard workers and tireless campaigners. Both are "presidential."
