Remember when McCain called Chelsea "ugly"?
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 06:13 PM by maximusveritas
In light of the outrage at David Shuster for asking if Chelsea was "sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way", let's remember what current Republican Presidential candidate John McCain said about Chelsea a few years back.

Here is the "joke" McCain told about Hillary:
"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno".

Whereas Shuster was talking about Chelsea the 27-year old woman, McCain was talking about Chelsea the 18-year old teenage girl.

Apparently McCain quietly apologized to Bill Clinton at the time, but most people have forgotten about this incident (if they ever heard about it at all thanks to McCain's buddies in the media).

What are the chances that the media will talk about it now? Slim. But I thought it was worth mentioning here.

By the way, here's a link to a good David Corn article about how the media covered up for McCain on this:

6. Yep, that's the big story lurking behind this
McCain has a long history of nastiness that the media has covered up.

2. But Hillary has a great relationship with him.
Selective outrage = false outrage.

It's one of the reasons I can't stand him.

4. Clintons are very close with McCain. Cheap shots only bother them when they think
they can gain politically for their own campaigns.

Shuster screwed up but the high volume of feigned outrage is typical political manipulation.

7. I don't blame them
They've got to do what they need to win.

For that reason, I think Hillary will probably bring up this incident in the General Election if she is the nominee. But I'd like to see it brought up now in case she doesn't become the nominee.

5. also, McCain insulted Chelsea herself
Shuster's comment was directed at whoever had the bright idea to have Chelsea make those calls--i.e., political advisors, whose job description includes being criticized--not at Chelsea herself.

12. I'm sure, but I'd hope we'd hold our Presidential candidates to a higher standard
than a DUer. We may be good on a number of fronts, but civility has never been one of them.

13. Young people hear the word pimp these days completely different than the way
it used to be.

Shuster was wrong because he's a NEWSMAN. But the overthetop outrage as if peoples delicate natures are effected is ridiculous. Especially some of those feigning offense. They cuss like streetgangs themselves around here. heh

14. If McCain apologized to Bill, I dont think that would have stopped the hurt for Chelsea
Maybe if McCain wanted to be mean about candidates children, he should bring to light how Mike Huckabee's son tortured and killed a dog when he was 17.

15. McCain made a very well-publicized apology at the time.
He also said he realized he'd made a terribly offensive remark the minute he said it; he didn't try to weasel out of a direct apology the way David Shuster has done.

I don't like McCain. He did pimp himself out, in the "whore" sense of the word, to Bush. But he did that years after he owned up to his horrible "joke" and took a much-deserved beating in the media.

16. Give me a break; More well-publicized than this one?
And his press secretary actually tried to deny he said anything bad at first. It was only when he realized it might come out that he went into apology mode. Even then, neither he or the media, would say what exactly he said.

If you read Corn's article above, you'll note that the media whitewashed this incident completely. I'd be surprised if more than more than 3 percent of the public knew about this.
