Al Franken wins 4 of 6 Delegates at Minnesota Caucus!
Caucus turnout record-breaking

Staff reports

Huge crowds all over the country turned out to vote on Super Tuesday, and the caucuses in Grand Marais were no exception.

Both the Republicans and the Democrats had record-breaking crowds at their caucuses.

As with the Republicans, the attendees cast presidential preferential ballots. The results were: Barack Obama, 233; Hillary Clinton, 72, John Edwards, 5, Dennis Kucinich, 1.

The Democrats also held a walking sub-caucus to apportion delegates to the State Convention for senatorial candidates. Of the six delegate seats available, 4 went to Al Franken and 2 went to Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.

More than 300 Democrats crowded into the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on Super Tuesday for the caucus where they cast preferential presidential ballots. Volunteers Mike Carlson and Mary Bebie, left, help participants register and cast their preferential ballots, above.

Voters flood Kagin for DFL caucus
By: Tressa Versteeg, Staff Writer
Issue date: 2/8/08 Section: News

About 945 people attended the DFL caucus for St. Paul precinct W-3 P-07, breaking the previous record high of 250. Around half of the 945 left after they voted for the presidential candidate, leaving 435, many of whom were first time caucus-goers.

"I was really impressed," Ben Gockel '11 said. "I thought it would be slightly more disorganized than it was. For all the people that came, who were unexpected, things seemed to go smoothly."

The first part of the evening began officially at 6:30 p.m., with a line stretching down Grand Avenue to get into Kagin Ballroom. People were still streaming in the doors and registering at the official start time of 7 p.m., and the caucus preliminaries began before everyone was in and seated.

<snip>

Next, several caucus-goers volunteered for various precinct positions and there was an opportunity for caucus-goers to speak in support of the three candidates up for Senate nomination. Will Howell '08 spoke on behalf of Al Franken and Chip Peterson, a community member, spoke for Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. No one chose to speak for Mike Ciresi.

Letter: DFL Veterans Caucus is endorsing Al Franken’s bid
Bemidji Pioneer
Published Friday, February 08, 2008

As chairman of the Minnesota DFL Veterans Caucus, I oversaw the screening of U.S. Senate candidates for endorsement by our caucus. The candidates all had expressed a sincere desire to serve the interests of veterans, service members and their families. However, one stood well above the others, having shown both admiration and concern for the men and women who serve this country long before he considered a run for public office.

Several years ago, Al Franken began visiting the troops overseas, bringing them entertainment and gaining an appreciation for the sacrifices they make.

Since then, he’s often spoken out on their behalf, advocating for more and better body armor and vehicle armor, the restoration of VA benefit cuts, and recognition of the looming veterans health care crisis.

<snip>

It seemed an obvious choice for the DFL Veterans Caucus to endorse Al Franken. He’s been there for vets and active service members for years and he gives every indication of continuing to be there for us. We’re proud to support his candidacy.

5. Your subject line is misleading
Franken won 4 out of 6 delegates at ONE Minnesota caucus.

Most areas of the state did not elect State Convention delegates last Tuesday - they will be elected at the County Unit and Senate District conventions that well be held between now and April 6.

I like Franken and will have no problem voting for him if he gets the party endorsement, but Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer is the more progressive candidate.

6. Just to be clear
this is just one precinct. In many precincts, mine for example, none of the 8 delegates stated any preference for any candidate. We just volunteered to be delegates. Anyone who volunteered got to be either a delegate or alternate. No clue as to how people felt about any candidate other than presidential.

23 Obama
2 uncommitted
4 Clinton
