So when does Kerry choose?
When exactly does Kerry choose a VP? I am not sure on this.

It's up to him.

3. He'll wait until the convention
Otherwise, why should anyone watch it.

11. I think it's exactly the opposite...
He won't wait until the convention because annoucing a VP means free media coverage. The convention itself is also free media coverage. VP + convention at the same time = less free media coverage. Kerry has no money. Kerry needs free media coverage. Therefore by transitive property he will not choose his VP at the convention. But hey, math isn't always right.

4. It's usually done at the convention.
Because that's when the candidate is nominated. And despite what the operatives here would have you believe, there is no nominee yet, nor will there be one until July. And for Kerry to announce a running mate before the nomination would not only be presumptuous, but downright arrogant.

Now this is not to say that he doesn't have a short list or that he isn't thinking about it. But there won't be a VP named until July. You can bet your soul on that.

8. Not so much
most nominees pick a VP before the convention actually.

12. Isn't the the nominee after he gest the amount of delegates that he needs?
Which will be sooner than July.

5. Wondering the same. Strategically, is earlier or later better?
Earlier would probably "gel" support for the ticket, but would also give the dark side more time to smear.

Also, AS has said, and I assume DK agrees, that the convention should serve as having input into who completes the ticket.

Personally, I'd like to know sooner, because I hate waiting and anticipating. But I'm thinking the announcement won't be made until the convention.

Wonder what recent history says about the timing of choosing a running mate?

6. Recent history has little bearing on this election, and I believe the
Kerry people have said he'll choose within the next couple of weeks.

He'll use the convention to announce his shadow cabinet, IMHO.

Of course, I could be fulla beans. Wouldn't be the first time.

7. Not before late April at the EARLIEST
so the speculation is all moot and stupid at this point

9. 2-3 months from now...
The process actually takes a bit of time. Two experts on CNN agreed on a May-June timeframe.

That will be a good time for Kerry to take the news cycle with this news.

10. It will be discussed much before the Convention (but not by Kerry).
It's a tried and true tactic to keep Kerry in the news without having to spend precious funds on political ads.

13. When people get bored of speculating about it
He will announce his running mate and get a new cycle of free media.

Well, that would be my plan. :)

14. I'm undecided
on the one hand, the lack of a VP is putting a lot of potential candidates in the spotlight in the meantime, but on the other hand if we had a VP already, we could double our campaign coverage
